TechnologyI am Theresa Payton, cybersecurity expert, former White House CIO and Head of Intelligence on CBS’ “Hunted.” Ask Me Anything!

Mar 10th 2017 by TrackerPayton • 53 Questions • 2783 Points

We are Max Bemis of Say Anything and Anthony Raneri of Bayside! We are about to head out on a co-headline tour together throughout the US, and we're bringing out our friends in Reggie and the Full Effect and Hot Rod Circuit. Come to the tour (grab your tix here - http://sayanything.shofetti.com / http://bayside.shofetti.com) and in the meantime - ask us anything you want right here!

Q:

Do you cover the webcam on your laptop PC?

A:

What happens if you accidentally damage the merchandise? You return for new stuff or notify the customer? You have to pay for damaged goods?

Q:

Hey Anthony! I'm a huge Bayside fan and the mod over at the Bayside subreddit, /r/baysideisacult. You should check it out!

Is it true that everyone is Bayside is having kids so that you guys can teach them to play music and start the next rock supergroup?

A:

YES! I have a campatch card on every webcam. It doesn't stop the spying on the audio side but it stops the visual spying

Q:

It happens quite often actually, and we don't need to pay what was damaged. Sometimes the packers will put 20 pounds worth of items in a brown bag and it will just break. When this happens, I call the customer and let them know that the bag is broken but the items are sill in good conditions, if I notice that an item has been damaged I will tell the customer and return it to the warehouse, if it's just the box of the item that broke, most often the customer won't care, but if they do, we just issue a refund. I also tell them that if the item is damaged because the box is closed and I can't open it, to call support and tell them, but before they call support, I already told them so they know whats going on.

A:

that's awesome!

and yes, I do think our kids will all be forming a ripping band in the near future

Q:

Is there a percentage of the time that people may be spying on you through your webcam? Is it completely random if they're likely to spy on you versus someone else?

A:

I'm actually a TOC agent that you or the customer would talk to when something like this happens. I've noticed that drivers usually seem frustrated at having to call us and I was wondering why that is

Q:

I'd just like to say that being a kid from Long Island in the early 2000's, listening to Bayside and being able to connect with people through your music, got me through some of the toughest times of my life. How does it feel knowing you've influenced so many lives?

A:

It depends. If you are interesting they would probably spy on you a lot. If you have a cover on your camera they may go away. It's hard to understand the digital creeps that do this stuff. We worked a case where a male college student left his devices around in girls' dorm rooms and then would spy on them while they slept, studied, got dressed. When pressed by the college, he didn't have a good reason for it...but then again there's not one.

Q:

Man, with all due respect, YOU GUYS ARE THE WORST! Literally, you guys are just a middle man that work from home and issue tickets to dispatch between with us delivery drivers and Amazon Dispatch. If Amazon would add a feature to our apps to contact dispatch and leave notes, it would make our lives WAAAYYY easier. I am not saying you exactly, but 99% of the time whatever we say or do even though it's only on-road support, it's out of your reach except trying to contact the customer, you guys do have a better way or more numbers to call from to reach the customer, but besides that the same exact answer is: I am doing the notes to send to the station.

And telling us if it's an attended delivery and we still have to do other deliveries to wait for the customer or re-attempt delivery is something that we don't have the time to do. The other day I contacted support, the agent told me to NOT mark the packages as undeliverable and to continue my route and re-attempt, I marked it undeliverable regardless. It counts towards me if I make that delivery late.

A:

it's a pretty heavy thing. it's kind of a lot of responsibility but I just think about the bands that have influenced me and it's cool to think that I am that to someone else -anthony

Q:

what other things can a person with little to no tech knowledge do to protect their privacy and information?

A:

How does one get into this?

Do you think this is more or less lucrative that Uber driving?

Q:

I'd love to hear the answers to this!!

A:

(1) digital devices should stay out of private spaces; (2) keep the operating systems, browsers, and other software as up to date as you can b/c updates often include new security/privacy patches

Q:

Comparing it to Uber, it depends. I average between $23-27 an hour, the good this that it's guaranteed pay, even if you don't get a route, you still get paid.

A:

that's a good question! i've always been a fan of Bayside and we have the same friends and booking agent. There are bands that are basically brothers of ours that we haven't toured with yet and bands that i hardly know that we've toured with, so often the most obvious thing crops up kind of randomly in your head when you've got so much going on as a musician. I will say I did have a "duh" moment when the tour was suggested because it's such a perfect fit.

Q:

can you elaborate on #1 or point me in the right direction for a more detailed explanation?

Cheers!

A:

How much of that is going to gas, insurance, etc?

Q:

Max, any chance you'll take on some recent political issues via song? Your bluntness is refreshing.

A:

sure. smart phones and devices with webcams should either have their cameras covered or be placed device / camera side down when in your bedroom or closet. I know a lot of people use them for alarm clocks or charge these devices at night in their rooms. You get 2 bonuses here: (1) they can't spy on you via the camera and (2) you avoid suffering from "junk sleep" which is the slight interruption of sleep that happens when device screens / chargers/ etc. glow or blink in the dark while you sleep

Q:

In my case, the car I drive, is not expensive, cheap to maintain and gives me between 25-29 mpg. I pay $330 every 6 months for insurance and separate around 20% of daily pay towards car maintenance, tires, etc.

A:

our next record isn't political but it's socio-political in nature and is about one aspect, a direct product of the kind of society that could actually elect Donald Trump - mb

Q:

so it doesn't give any real security if your mic volume is muted or down to the lowest setting? i did not realise this....

A:

At what point do you know if we did or did not tip you? What % are no tips?

Q:

Favorite episode of The Office?

A:

sadly no, you just muffled them. You can elect to turn off your mic and camera in your privacy settings.

Q:

We can only see the total amount paid (hourly pay = tip). If the delivery was a one-hour delivery from our warehouse in Springfield, VA. to District Heights, MD. and you were the only stop in that delivery block, then we know who didn't tip. If it's a route with several stops, we don't know who left tips.

I'd say 65% out of 100% of customers do leave tips.

A:

Prison Mike -anthony

Q:

How secure are products like Amazon Echo and Google Home? Do you use them in your own home?

A:

Typically, things like making you wear a uniform would violate independent contractor status. Has there been anything like that that you are expected to do?

Q:

Hey Max! At the end of "A walk through hell" it sounds like you're telling a story. You say something along the lines of "And I was like stepping on it like... stomp ...but there was no damage." I was wondering if you remembered what story you were telling? I've been curious about it for years

Also I made this kinda trippy picture of you

A:

Great question. Just know that all new tech is completely hackable. Sorry to be a downer on that. I love Google home. Advice: (1) create a separate wifi access point for your smart devices so it's separate from the wifi that you use for confidential trans; (2) choose wisely how much you integrate the echo or home devices into your home.

Q:

Amazon doesn't give us a dress code, actually they tell us that we can wear whatever we want. There's people that do it in suit and tie and woman who wear REALLY shirt skirts and flip flops in summer.

A:

ha!i think i almost rear ended someone, which did periodically in high school - MB

Q:

This is part of the reason I've been so hesitant to get a Google Home. But then again, I know I have a phone, computer and everything else that's hackable too..

A:

Can you run side businesses or promotions as an independent contractor? (If you're wearing a suit/tie, for example, could you also advertise for a local tailor while performing deliveries?)

Q:

Hi Max! Long time fan, first time caller. Thanks for doing this.

  1. Any plans to celebrate 10 years of In Defense (my personal favorite)?

  2. Is the Song Shop Fail thing still happening?

  3. WHEN NEW ALBUM?!

  4. Will you and Sherri adopt me?

A:

It's okay to start slow when you integrate these devices. Maybe start off with a Google Home and give it, it's own Wifi segment on your home network. Consider just linking your calendar to it and using it to help you manage your day, the traffic, the weather, etc until you get comfortable with the next place in your house you would like more integration and automation. Although everything is hackable the security teams at Amazon and Google are really smart and work very hard to keep things secure.

Q:

I guess you could, but if Amazon finds out, or a customer complains, it can get you in trouble. I'd rather just advice to do the route.

A:

yes, yes, 2018, yes -mb

Q:

Any tips for an "average" person who might not know much about cybersecurity?

A:

I'm not certain, but I think it would be Amazon that would be in trouble if they have any restrictions or penalties on freedoms allowed for independent contractors. They couldn't for example prevent you from putting a large wraparound advertisement on your own delivery vehicle (like say "BUY BOB'S TACOS") for a different service, right?

Q:

To both of you: I always wonder if members of my favorite bands (especially live) go to concerts (and not just go back stage, but just attend a concert). Do you? If so, what are some of your favorite bands to see live?

A:

this is a great question! and you are not "average" - you are great for asking a question! yes, (1) have more than 1 email address and separate your social media accounts on 1 email address vs. your online banking / confidential transactions (2) consider using 2 factor auth for ALL accounts (that's usually a code texted to your smart phone (3) get a google voice # and use that online vs. your real cell phone number (4) consider using encrypted apps such as threema or signal (5) and NEVER click on links even from people you know without checking them out first on a tool like virus total (free)

Q:

I think it's more of ethical stuff.

I've been in Lyft rides where the drivers try to sell me whatever they have a side-gig and it gets a little uncomfortable.

A:

i go pretty often. RxBandits are one of my favorite bands to see live -anthony

Q:

How did Hunted work without law enforcement or government help? Did you hack into stoplight cameras?

A:

that brings up the idea of using your delivery vehicle simultaneously for lyft and amazon. doable?

Q:

Anthony. Can we expect a solo album from you anytime soon? I absolutely love your solo work

A:

Tks for that question. I wasn't involved in the production side but I know they created a notional environment that was had the powers of the state. In Command we ran it as an investigation and submitted subpoena requests, requests for investigation, etc. as if it were a real world case. And just because we requested it, doesn't mean it was approved. We had lawyers and judges that approved or denied our requests just as in the real world! Cool and smooth move on production's part!

Q:

There's a dude in our warehouse that does Amazon Restaurants deliveries in Northern Virginia while also doing Uber Eats at the same time. Multi-tasking at it's finest.

A:

i hope that I can get the time to again. Bayside keeps me pretty busy and I always said that I would never take time away from the band to work on the solo stuff. Whenever there is a gap in Bayside's schedule again, i'd love to -anthony

Q:

What are your thoughts on traditional/legacy antivirus solutions, and the new trend of 'next-gen' endpoint solutions?

A:

Do they explain why drivers can't see the delivery instructions? I live in a gated complex and about half of the drivers have to call, and others somehow figure out the gate code. Typical explanation is that they cant read delivery instructions until the delivery has been made. That makes no sense to me, but I'm sure they have a reason. Is it because they don't want drivers reading their phones while driving?

Q:

For both: How do you like your eggs?

A:

Great question on anti virus solutions. Since every 90 seconds a new deviant of malware is released in the wild, these solutions have a hard time keeping up. It's like Lucy and Ethel in the chocolate factory when the conveyor belt sped up. They are important tools but they sometimes give users a false sense of security.

Q:

It happens, the app does have some glitches where sometimes we can't see the notes left until we are actually in the delivery place or at least a quarter mile away from the delivery stop. We have made several feedback notes on that issue and we keep getting the same canned answers over and over again, so I guess that they are actually fixing that issue.

You could, as a last resort, write on the delivery address of Prime Now Orders the gate code before the street address. That way you are guaranteed that we will see the code before the address.

A:

sunny side up -anthony

Q:

What are your thoughts on Trump's claim that Obama wiretapped Trump?

A:

Do you make enough if i only tip $1 or $2? I have struggling college student friend that wants to ask.

Q:

Hi Max,

You wrote me a song once and I loved it. What inspired you to start doing Song Shop?

Edit: Also, the Say Anthing/Saves The Day 10/15 Year Anniversary Show at the OC Observatory was honestly the best show I ever went to in my life. Thank you so much.

Also, Anthony, I fucking love Bayside. I'm sad I'm missing your tour this time around.

A:

I candidly don't know what to think on that one. Maybe he was trying to find out who was getting the job of running the show the Apprentice?

Q:

We make a minimum guaranteed. If the driver is using a 2007 Prius then he's making good money, but if the driver is using a BMW X5 to deliver packages, well maybe he might need the tip. Tip as much or as little as you feel like. The Amazon app will tell you the recommended amount depending on what you are ordering. If you are only ordering $20 worth of stuff I know it doesn't make sense to leave a $5.00 tip. So yeah you could leave $2. I also might add, we can't see who left tips or not.

A:

why are you missing it? hope you have a good excuse -Anthony

Q:

Any advise on how we should be responding to the released documents by WikiLeaks pertaining to Vault7? I expect vendors will continue to release updates to their products in response to the leak, what can we do in the meantime?

A:

I know that your example was to highlight the fact that a Prius will be achieving better gas mileage than an X5, but you literally could not have chosen a more backwards example to portray someone who is struggling and "might need the tip."

Q:

Who's more punk Max or Anthony?

A:

Wikileaks announced they plan to share the code with the vendors. I highly recommend you be on high alert for scams and emails that act like they have the solution. Only download updates from the legit company sites for your Smart TV, Smart Phones, IoT devices, etc.

Q:

A Hummer could beat the X5.

Edit: And believe it or not, people do deliver in Suburbans, Ridgelines, Dodge Durango R/T, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger Hemi, BMW 5 series and 3 series, Mercedes E350 and other high end/gas guzzler cars.

A:

ant - mb

Q:

What is the craziest IT situation you have experienced?

A:

OP, people can still see personal information from your route sheet. Can you please delete that?

Q:

Elaborate?

A:

Complete server failure when trying to do a demo for the executives of my company to convince them to spend money on it. Talk about sweating bullets...I began to do drawings on note pads and telling stories about what the system could do . Oy. Horrible.

Q:

Done. Thanks.

A:

i'm pretty sure ant grew up going to punk and hardcore shows in new york whereas i grew up playing with Maroon 5 on the fucking sunset strip - MB

Q:

So... what's the conclusion of the demo? Were they empathetic?

A:

Since you're traveling a lot just wondering what you like to listen to? Music, podcasts?

Q:

Hey Max! I want a song so bad from song shop but I'm so confused about what I want it to be about. What topics do you really love writing about for song shop songs?

A:

they gave me the money to do the full system...the next time I did a demo it worked. Phew!

Q:

I have SiriusXM, I listen to mostly music and talk shows including news. (Hits1, Hip Hop Nation, Alt-Nation, 90's on 9, Pop2k, CNN News, Fox News and Comedy Channel)

A:

personally, anything i great but i confess i enjoy the slightly "deeper" songs more whether they're positive or negative. feelings, bro - mb

Q:

Are there any signs that can help discovering someone that hacked your computer/phone? If there are have you noticed some of them sometime in your life?

A:

Nice, who have you been listening to as of late?

Q:

Max, One of my favorite songs from you is "Ahh...Men" off of Say Anything's self titled album. Can you talk a little bit about your head space when writing that song? Does the song mean anything to you now that it's been quite a few years since you wrote it?

A:

Couple of telltale signs: (1) device reboots for no apparent reason; (2) slowness of device (3) files on the device seem out of order (4) check your sent files to make sure you really sent them all (5) when in doubt, I'm a fan of backing up data and doing a factory reset (6) microsoft, apple, and sophos all have free malware removal tools on their websites as well that may be of help

Q:

Honestly, I got the new song from Alessia Cara and Zedd - Stay on repeat in my head. It doesn't go away.

A:

still means very much to me as I'm a believer in the metaphysical and the oneness of the universe and the song is about my devotion to things that are larger than myself, which i king of how i keep myself centered and find meaning in this weird fleeting life - mb

Q:

Hi, thanks for doing this AMA!

What are the best certifications to have in infosec? In coding you can prove your skills with the quality of your code without the need for certifications.

Is there something similar to this in infosec?. Like finding vulnerabilities and relevant bugs.

A:

I work for Frito lay in Lorton just down the street and it's killing me. I'll PM you if I apply in case there is a referral bonus in it for you

Q:

On a personal level, what are a few of your favorite films?

A:

OSCP is a favorite. Try online classes at coursera too to find your favs.

Q:

There's no referral bonus for us drivers, but thanks tho.

A:

Fiddler on the Roof is probably my favorite but I also love the Godfather and most Woody Allen movies - Anthony

Q:

On a personal level, what are a few of your favorite films?

A:

Do you set your schedule like uber or do you have a set weekly schedule??

Q:

this is for both anthony and max, but out of every song either of you have ever written, which is your favorite to play live?

A:

Thanks for asking! The Princess Bride is an all time favorite of mine but it's hard to compete with Monty Python's Holy Grail.

Q:

We have what is called offers. Amazon sends out offers throughout the day and if you are available to work the shift that they are asking you, you just pick it up. When no offers are available it looks like this

When there are offers available it will show up like this

And you can accept or deline the offer if you want to work it or not, like this

Disclaimer: Some markets pay more than others, some pay less than others.

Edit: Messed up imgur pics, fixed.

A:

as of right now i really like playing "so numb" - MB

Q:

What does your company Fortalice do? Do Charles, Landon, and Myke really work there?

A:

Are you worried about being replaced by drones?

Q:

Serious question: Would either of you play at my wedding?

A:

Yes, Charles and Landon work for Fortalice. Myke is a great friend and sci fi author and works in cyber/intel for a large police unit (have to keep him covered) but we'd love to have him on team Fortalice one day. We protect Nations, Business, and People. We're hiring! Want to join us? :-)

Q:

Not really, it will take Amazon quite a while to produce the amount of drones needed. Plus Washington D.C. is a HUGEE No-Fly zone.

A:

max will -anthony

Q:

With a high interest in this type of security and no professional experience, are you willing to train eager individuals?

A:

Does it annoy you if I ask you to wait a minute and take the big green cooler bags with you? I hate having them sitting around my house since they are so big.

Q:

Does he have his license to officiate too?

A:

We highly recommend classes and internships. We have an amazing intern, Steven, he rocks

Q:

I can't speak for everyone, but for me, I don't mind. There are Amazon trucks that have set routes every week to go pick up Fresh totes from the customers houses. If you just set the totes outside eventually someone will take it. It might take up to two weeks after your Fresh delivery to get the totes removed from your house.

You can also request the totes to be delivered attended - meaning that there needs to be someone present at the time of delivery and we take the totes back to the warehouse and just leave the stuff that you ordered in plastic bags.

You can also fold the totes by opening the tote and lifting the black pad down below that says Amazon, it i'll fold very slim. If you have totes with insulated bags, you can just fold the insulated bags and put them all inside one fresh tote. Like this

Edit: Imgur keeps putting all pictures into an album automatically.

A:

i have a license to kvetch - mb

Q:

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,

and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,

and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,

does the socket packet pocket have an error to report?

On a more serious note, recently James Comey has said "There is no such thing as absolute privacy in America". With that in mind, are there any software suites that you could recommend to help better preserve our privacy online? Maybe MIT's upcoming Riffle network?

A:

How much do you have to lift to be an Amazon driver?

Q:

Two random questions for the both of you 1) Favorite city to play in Texas? 2) Favorite shows on Netflix currently?

A:

Great poetry. I had to talk to my kids the other day about floppy disks and what they were. Oy! I did read what James Comey said and I respect his service and opinion very much but respectfully disagree. Democracy dies when the citizens believe they cannot say a cross word or voice an opinion of disagreement. Privacy can be preserved, we just have to be more diligent about it. Starting with a few simple things like browsing online and using tools such as the EFF's Privacy Badger and Ghostery can be quite helpful. Using comms tools such as Signal, Threema or email platform of Proton mail can also be useful.

Q:

Terms and Conditions claims up to 50 pounds, that said, we might have orders that weigh at total of 200 pounds or even more, so we need to do several trips from the car to the house or apartment.

A:

i think the shows are the best in either Austin or San Antonio but i really like being in West Texas

And I just finished Downton Abbey on Amazon -anthony

Q:

How did the team feel when the #lostwolves flew Beth into the Hunted game zone?

A:

Do they loan, or can you bring your own dolly to help with that?

Q:

Hey Anthony, long time Bayside fan here.

I've always wondered, what's the story behind the bird logo?

Thanks and keep up the great music!

A:

CAN'T.TALK.HURTS.TOO.MUCH.

Q:

They let you use a cart from the warehouse to your car to put everything in the car. After that, you are on your own.

You can get little dollies from Costco for around $20 that fold and are small, but thats up to the driver.

A:

our friend Jason designed it when Sirens and Condolences came out and put it on the album art. We just stuck with it for a while and it kind of came to represent everything that we tried to stand for as people and in our music -anthony

Q:

As someone who was at the absolute pinnacle of the IT industry, does your family ever stop asking you to fix their routers?

A:

Yeah, i have a question.

Where's my stuff?

Q:

Anthony, I just moved to NYC what are some must check out bars etc?

A:

I get asked for tech and security support all the time. Even at cocktail parties. It makes me wonder if Doctors get asked for free medical advice like this too?

Q:

In the warehouse, as soon as you pay for it, we will deliver it!

A:

I don't really go to bars but you have to eat at the Parkside in Corona -Anthony

Q:

People have given up allot of privacy in the digital world. We like things to be convenient, so we voluntarily give up allot of private info. Do you see this trend continuing? or do you think people are becoming more savvy about privacy?

A:

Is there a minimum of required hours that you work each week? Or is it more like Uber where you choose when you want to work?

Q:

Anthony, where can I hear your smiths cover band?!???

A:

What I love about the privacy discussion is we are FINALLY having one. I don't believe people really understand up until recently that every finger swipe, mouse click, ATM visit, etc. was being memorialized, correlated, and categorized for future use. On the surface, this is data is collected to be "helpful" but that data in the wrong hands is actually not helpful at all. It was my hope with a show like Hunted that people would be entertained, engaged and a little enraged about their privacy. I do think privacy is a personal decision though. A famous chef may need to be wide open on social media to further their brand/career while a young teen needs more privacy and protection. So hopefully I can share info that will help you make good decisions that are right for you!

Q:

Yes, you can work when and how long, as long as they have offers or shifts available for you to work. Just because you go to the warehouse doesn't mean that you have stuff to do.

A:

We only payed one show. We might do some more though. It's a lot of fun - anthony

Q:

Is Charles Debarber as savvy in person?

A:

Why did you post a picture of your bathroom?

Q:

Max, would you ever consider just playing guitar for a side-project band?

A:

Charles is an American Hero, loyal, hard working, and yes, very savvy!

Q:

Why not post a picture of our bathroom?

A:

have always wanted to - mb

Q:

Is Charles Debarber as savvy in person?

A:

what is the weirdest combination of things you have ever delivered?

what happens if you dont make it to a customer on time?

Q:

Hey Guys, I understand you're Musicians but when your not touring or writing music, Do you have day jobs?

A:

Hmmm...I will ask him, he supplies his own but I have talked about buying him a team hat!

Q:

On the app we can see what the customer ordered, but it takes a few steps to see them. You need to reach the destination first and then go to Return Packages and then Customer doesn't want a particular item to see the whole order of what the customer paid for. It takes some time and I usually don't do it. I do it only in 1-hour deliveries to see what they are paying the extra $8 on, and oh god, people just want sunscreen and mascara plus Apple juice and a box of Chewy Chips Ahoy really bad.

If we deliver late packages, we better have a REALLY good reason of why the order was late. If there was simply too much demand and not enough drivers to fill the demand then we are good, also with traffic, but Amazon can track us and see everything that we do, including the speed we are doing and if we brake hard. If we stopped for food in McDonalds and got late deliveries because of that, it's our fault and we are screwed.

A:

no -anthony

Q:

How on earth did the English family evade y'all for 28 days? They did nothing and got like 5 minutes of airtime on Hunted.

A:

As an independent contractor are you responsible for paying your own taxes or does amazon deduct before paying you?

Q:

Hey Max, your experiences with bipolar, anxiety, depression, drug/alcohol abuse etc. are pretty inspiring and your art has helped a lot of people get through their struggles with mental disorders and disabilities, including myself. I know that you're likely far beyond the worst of it, but how do these things--if at all--effect your present-day life with touring, multiple projects and family? Been a fan of your's for awhile, best wishes to you.

A:

Well, for starters the English family didn't go to taco bell!

Q:

Amazon sends us a 1099. Up to us to pay our taxes.

A:

thank you for your wishes! i still deal with my disorder every day but thankfully a healthy lifestyle and medication deals with what could be total insanity. the rest is just being a really emotional guy who takes things in deeply and has powerful feelings, but i wouldn't trade that for anything now that i'm surrounded by people who love and support me. It totally works and everyone has their shit in life to deal with -MB

Q:

What's your security at home like? Do you have a router with built in VPN and a Faraday cage for your smartphones when you go to sleep? Just wondering how intensely an expert practices what they preach.

A:

Do you guys have to verify age for alcohol purchases? Because you guys kept the party going within one hour when all the liquor stores were closed. We are all 27 or older, but still... is that your responsibility? It seemed way too easy to just have bottles sent to us instantly http://imgur.com/xKXch1P

Q:

Hey! Been a fan for about 10 years! (Almost 27 now :))

Max, in your song Alive With the Glory of Love, is it true it is after your grandparents in Auschwitz? Can you tell me any background?

Love, a fellow Jew!

A:

i'm off the grid at home...mostly.

Q:

In Virginia, we can't deliver alcohol; you need to get it from Uncle Sam's Liquor Store aka. VABC. Lucky you that can get it delivered.

We were trained tho, that if the order has alcohol, to check for ID.

A:

yup, my grandparents (who i actually was never close with) fell in love with each other with the backdrop of WW2 and my grandma was in Auschwitz right before they met

Q:

Do you feel like the Hunted show suffered because of the endgame for the final two pairs? Watching it, we felt as though the last two pairs were dealt a crappy hand. They manage to last 28 days, and then the "endgame" was 1) tell the hunters where they are, twice. 2) Make them move on foot to an extraction when the hunters knew their locations, exit methods, and had vehicles.

My wife and I were a little disappointed. Either pair could have been caught simply by happenstance of a hunter team being close to an extraction location. All the other tracking methodologies were cool, but saying: They are at this bank, and they are leaving by air really makes it easy to find them. Like, ridiculously easy.

A:

Wierdest thing you've delivered?

Q:

Anthony! This is bayside question, would you guys ever do an anniversary tour for shudder?

A:

Thank you for watching Hunted! I love our Hunted fans and appreciate you so much. The fast paced editing of the finale was awesome wasn't it? What I think was hard to relay is we had reduced the number of ground hunters we had in the field and we still had 100,000 square miles to cover. Yes, they did have go to a bank to get their $ but we had no idea what town they would be in, we had to make calculated guesses. AFTER they made the transaction & left the bank is when we got an alert with an address and had to track that down. Soooo....if our cars were not close by, they were in the wind before we could get to the branch.

Q:

$200 worth of La Croix Lime 12 pack cases of flavored sparkling water. I know it's not weird weird, but it's weird like who would order $200 worth of sparkling water?

A:

it's possible. When Self Titled turned 10, we just pulled it out randomly and unannounced at a couple of shows. We may do something like that or a full anniversary tour. -anthony

Q:

What are your thoughts on the fight against Cyber criminals? How do you think the world will look in that regard in 10-15 years?

A:

What are you doing answering questions? I need my stuff ASAP bru!!

Q:

Hey Max! Just here to say I fell in love with my now husband to I Want To Know Your Plans. You're a bit of a legend (in general) but also in Oceanside, NY, where I'm from. What's the story with the weird, creepy mannequin at the tuxedo shop? Do you know what I'm talking about? Anyway, you and Sherri and Lucy and Coraline are serious family goals.

A:

I had a person say to me once, "if you and people that do security like you were doing your job, you should have worked yourself out of a job by now"...which is interesting and I asked him if he says that to fire depts and police units (with a smile of course) but candidly, I'm glad he said that to me because it got me thinking. First off, i cannot name 1 security problem that I or my colleagues in security have 100% eliminated for you. That's horrible! Here's why we haven't worked ourselves out of a job, the technology evolves and changes and with that so do consumer behaviors and with that so do the cybercriminal behaviors. My job in cybersecurity this year is very different than just a year ago. We build a wall to stop cybercriminals and then they find a way around it. The security profession, and I hold myself accountable here, has to change how we protect and defend you. It starts with me. So what does next 10-15 years look like? (1) we stop holding YOU as the consumer accountable for security and we do it for you (2) we think differently about the cybercriminals motives and tactics and shut them down (3) we develop international accords so when cybercriminals attack and we figure out who they are, we can put them through a legal process and perhaps jail

Q:

Pay the stuff bruh, it's already in the cart and waiting for your credit card info.

A:

i'm pretty sure my ex-girlfriend stole or defaced it (no hate, just saying it wasn't me) - mb

Q:

What makes/models of devices do you use personally?

A:

What's your route? What time of day do you start the route? Also, what time do you finish? What kind of vehicle do you drive? What color is it? Are you armed? How can I tell which boxes I should take when I'm robbing you? I mean checking out merch.....

Q:

Ant - I've posed this notion to you a couple times before in person, but I absolutely loved when you and Nick did Gumshoe Radio... one day, it would be so sweet if you guys would throw a podcast of sorts together if you can find time in your schedule; any interest?

A:

Ah! Before I talk about what I use, just a comment that the big companies leap frog each other from time to time on privacy and security so some of this comes down to personal preferences. We run the company & my house mostly on Apples. We do have other operating systems in use at work and home but our day to day go to devices are mostly Mac, iPhone, iPad...

Q:

Our routes are not fixed, we move all around town. Send me a GPS and I'll put it in my car for you to track me.

You tell me at what time better suits you for me to start?

I drive a bright orange Pontiac Aztec very hard to miss with a huge Amazon sign on top if it.

You'll gotta find out what I'm packin'.

If the boxes are not heavy don't take it, take the heavy ones.

A:

i would love to. we had a lot of fun with Gumshoe. We're all so busy these days though, I'm not sure we'd be able to. I wish I could just put a show together whenever I had time but i think that those things come with expectations of consistency that I can't commit to -anthony

Q:

Can you replace my CIO?

A:

My husband works for Amazon prime now in our city. It seems like he's always searching for shifts and as soon as one pops up, it's gone. Do you have this issue where you are?

Q:

Anthony, Bayside had gotten me out of some really dark times when I was younger and I'm really grateful for that. It's a big reason for why I try to make every concert I can in NY you guys do. Holiday shows are always a blast. One question for ya,

1) Are you the one who does that piano for baby Britain and other songs like string me along?

Max, I've always wanted to see say anything live and I'm really looking forward to finally getting the chance!

A:

Landon from Hunted and who works for Fortalice recommends a flip phone instead of smart phone.

Q:

Yes, it happens in all markets. Tell him to just keep searching or if he can, to do it mostly from Thursday to Saturday, since a lot of other drivers are already capped with the full hours and can't do more blocks. He probably has better chances of getting blocks on the weekend.

A:

I play some of the piano on the recordings but sometimes we bring in experts. I played on String Me Along but not baby britain -anthony

Q:

Do you still do any coding? What do you like most about your current work?

A:

How many "offers" do you get in any given day?

Q:

Hey guys. This one's for Max. Over Say Anything's history you've had an awesome amount of guest vocalists on the albums. Who's your favorite or the one person you would've never guessed you'd have featured on one of your tracks?

A:

Great question. I'll be a student of my profession for life. I took an online python class last year via coursera. It was very helpful. I don't get the chance to do as much coding as I used too but I attempt to stay current. What I like most about my current work is working with really smart & passionate people to help our clients. When we help a company stop a breach or recover from one - the good guys win a little that day. When we help a person that's a victim of revenge porn and feels they have no hope of getting their privacy and their life back get those images offline...the good guys won a little that day. We're the Avengers righting the wrongs that happen via the internet...trying to make the internet a little safer so everyone can work, play, have fun on the internet.

Q:

Few days ago there were 18 offers listed at the same time. 2-hour blocks, 3-hour blocks and 4-hour blocks.

Most were Washington D.C. Restaurants.

Most drivers in my market don't like doing Washington D.C. Restaurant deliveries, myself included.

A:

anthony, obviously -mb

Q:

That is very admirable. It definitely feels like a hopeless fight at times.

A:

from one of the pics you shared, it had "40-54 includes tips"... why the difference? and how often do you get paid?

Q:

Max, it seems like you and your wife and raising your kids to be free spirits and they seem so happy on SM. Do you guys have any sort of parenting philosophy?

A:

I don't want you to feel hopeless! Just know there are security professionals out there determined to watch your back!

Q:

In that case $40 is the minimum guaranteed for the 2-hour block ($20 an hour) that you are going to get paid and it can go to $54 with the tips included, sometimes it goes even higher depending on how many stops you did and how much tip the customers left.

A:

certainly allowing them to express themselves fully and giving them as much love and support as possible while teaching them to be kind to each other and other people - MB

Q:

What's your advice to enterprise executives wrt security. What should they be thinking about that they don't already know?

What do you think about the intersection between security and AI / Machine Learning?

A:

Does a good tip mean I bet my order faster? Or are your routes pre-determined for you?

Q:

Hi guys! My question is for Max- First off, thank you for your beautiful tunes. Seriously. They've gotten me through so much. Anyways - Say Anything has some pretty serious fans. Has there ever been a fan at a show that just went overboard to the point where you had to be like, "Dude, calm down"? With that being said, have you ever had a fan that just blew you away with how INTO the show they are?

A:

Router security for executives vs. the geeks that configure and monitor them...executives should know that (1) going cheap on the devices not always a good move b/c there are counterfeit devices and the bonus you get is a backdoor phoning home to the real owner; (2) think about the data that you are trying to protect at the enterprise and name the most critical data elements you must protect and consider designing the WRT around those data elements perhaps even segmenting traffic so those elements are accessed/routed alone; (3) big fan of segmentation because it makes it easier to watch for anomalies; (4) have a governance board that develops the "gold standards" and approves few if any deviations from the gold standard .

Q:

Amazon gives us a suggested route, but I am free to do the route how it best serves me. If it's my last block (shift) and it's an order that is heading to where I live, but the suggested route tells me to start where I live and finish closer to the warehouse, I can start closer to the warehouse and finish near where I live.

Because you leave a $20.00 tip doesn't mean that your package will be the first one to be delivered. If you want your order fast, I'd suggest using the 1-hour delivery option if it's available in your market.

A:

well, during smaller shows with a pit sometimes i'll get grabbed or lovingly choked out which can be kind of intense, and does invoke a sort of calm-down thought, though i appreciate the whole thing. pretty much every show has fans that blow me away with their enthusiasm and especially knowing all the words to the songs ( : -MB

Q:

What's your advice to enterprise executives wrt security. What should they be thinking about that they don't already know?

What do you think about the intersection between security and AI / Machine Learning?

A:

For Max, who're you're biggest inspirations lyrically? Some of your lyrics are so profound and/or poetic I'm just curious if there are any particular lyricists, poets, writers or any other type of person who've inspired your style and how those influences have changed with the years and records.

(Sorry if this is badly worded)

EDIT: I'm gonna see you guys in Richmond and I'm so hype

Q:

for a sample of squirreling away something important -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yikpWtIFU8

A:

Jewish comedians have always been the biggest inspiration fort my writing.. Robert Klein, Woody Allen, Larry David. In terms of lyricists, hip hop was big for me growing up so Tupac and Biggie are a big influence. My friend Chris Conley as well. -MB

Q:

What top certs do you feel garner the most respect in your field?

A:

Anthony, love your music man. I've been listening for a long time. Huge fan with only one gripe. Back in 2007 or 2008 you played warped. In Los Cruces NM you tweeted that "to say it was the worst show ever would be an understatement". I kinda thought you were a dick for that, considering you came on at 6 pm on a day that got to 112 degrees. I've always wondered, was it a problem with the sweaty drained crowd, or a problem on stage?

Q:

I am a fan of hard work in the field but if you want to add some certs, I like the OSCP ($$ and not for the faint of heart).

A:

you know, I'm just a regular person. sometimes, i don't like things. i really don't remember that show in particular or what was wrong with it but sometimes I play shows I didn't like and sometimes I watch movies I didn't like. I think people depend on me to be honest -anthony

Q:

If you weren't certain that the news you were seeing was the news that other people were seeing, where, in a city, could you go to see what "generic" news was on tap for the day?

A:

Any hints on what material we can expect to hear on the upcoming tour?

Q:

I subscribe to various global newspapers which helps me get news on the USA from the outside point of view. It's eye opening to see what the overseas news reports on the USA vs. what our home news reports.

A:

all kinds of stuff. and we always try to play a lot of old stuff as well as stuff we've never played.

-mb

Q:

What would be your number one advice to give to someone wanting to get into cybersecurity?

A:

To Anthony, what do you think about St. Louis, Missouri? Rumor round here is that Bayside hates playing here

Q:

Take online classes and intern! Best way to get rollling. Our intern Steven says he's happy to hire some unpaid interns and coach and mentor them.

A:

it's not my favorite city in the world - anthony

Q:

Will there be a Season 2 for Hunted!?

A:

Max, what is Rum and The Stephen Hawking about? They're my two favorite songs but I can't figure them out! Can't wait to see you guys on May 6th!

Q:

“... a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.”

A:

rum is just a song about feeling confident and happy and alive being in a less than credible punk band. stephen hawking is about an immature spat i was in at the time, but it kind of links to the idea of anger and how to manage it, being a free spirit as well as maintaining self respect - mb

Q:

I am currently studying cyber engineering, and am really interested in the law enforcement aspect of cybersecurity. What course of action would you recommend I take to get there?

A:

dear max, i can't tell you how much you have helped me over the years through your music. i have to be honest and say i love you and never give up on music :D

my question for you max is, while you wrote the song "tradewaiter" for Polarity, what did you mean you wrote "just wait til you see what comes next, you wont know, what hit you"

second question, do you plan on writing anymore Polarity song? or comic books?

third question, are you working on any new albums for SA right now?! can we get a sneak peak of it?

fourth question, when are you coming to Rochester New york next? i know your going to buffalo NY but i dont have the money to travel there or for the tickets :C so next time you tour please come to Rochester NY

Q:

Join your local FBI Iinfragard. Great way to hear the legal side of the cybersecurity issues. It's free but you do have to pass a background check so if there's something shady in your past...well, you know.

A:

Hi! That was an allusion to Tim's life post-story, which I would love to return to in some form, especially as a sequel comic.

-MB

Q:

Hi Max! I'm a longtime megafan that has been to every one of your shows in Orlando since 2005, and some in other states also. Happy 11th birthday to the ... is a Real Boy album! Just a few questions:

1) Why did you choose to write the song "Less Cute" from a female perspective? Was it difficult writing from the perspective of the opposite gender?

2) What is your favorite SA song with Sherri? (mine is Six Six Six)

3) How are your girls doing on the road so far? I hope mini-Max (aka Coraline) isn't throwing too many tantrums!

Bonus question: At your HOB show summer 2015 in Orlando, I crowd surfed to Ahhh... Men and when I got to the front you held out the mic so I could sing a couple lyrics. I also touched your chest. Do you remember me? Probably not, but it was top 3 best moments of my life and I didn't shut up about it for weeks after.

A:

1) The song is about someone's reaction to misogyny so the story and the character appeared in my mind as female. But I've been there myself in certain ways.

2) I like "So Good" and "Cemetery" since they're so blatantly about her. Actually my favorite is probably "The Shape of Love to Come" for the same reason.

Q:

Hey guys! First off, thank you for making the music you do.. it truly is the best. I've always wondered, if you weren't making music or in the music industry, what other profession would you have wanted to do?

A:

i would be writing creatively (movies, comics, books) which I've begun doing anyway (comics) and plan on doing more of. - mb

Q:

Hey guys! Going to get specific; What is your favorite Elliott Smith song?

A:

pitseleh -mb

Q:

Who are some of the emerging or contemporary artists that you guys have been listening to/following? Also, can't express how excited I was to see that you guys would be sharing a headlining tour... unreal. See you in Michigan and be well!

A:

I'm really into the Menzingers new record and Tacocat right now -anthony

Q:

I love both of your lyrical styles. Where/When/How do you write lyrics to get such a great final product?

A:

I'm constantly fine tuning mine. I start by writing things before there is any music. I just write it as stream of consciousness with no meter or rhyme. Then I put it to music and turn it into lyrics. I keep tweaking it all the way until the record is recorded. -anthony

Q:

Anthony, How did you guys feel in the UK in 2015? Your show in Hackney, London will never leave my memory - I saw you pre-show at the bar and said hello as you walked by, to end up front row in the venue. I've been a fan for a long time and was surprised at the size of the venue honestly. What did you make of the turnouts personally and will you be coming back any time soon? I'd love to see your newer sets with the inclusion of Vacancy, I think it's one of my favourite records from Bayside and of all time!

A:

I love going to the UK. I love it as a place but the fans are real rabid and don't get to see us too often -anthony

Q:

Hi which of your songs or albums do you recommend for someone who would be a first time listener?

A:

blush they're not horses they're unicorns- mb

Q:

Anthony! Seriously long time fan. Since Sirens and Condolences. I have a two part question. Going through the number of members you've gone through with the band, how would you describe in your own words the evolution you've gone through in regards to who youre making music with? How much of an influence do your bandmates have on your music writing? Thanks for doing this AMA!

A:

we went through a bunch of members early on but it mainly had to do with people not wanting to make this a full time career. When you start a band with your friend in a basement and then all of a sudden you're on tour for 10 months a year and running a business, it might feel like it isn't what you signed up for - anthony

Q:

Anthony - did you ever see any footage from the show(s?) that the band played when you had to leave tour for the birth of your daughter? Watching Claudio from motion city sing Montauk was actually really fucking sweet haha. The show I'm referring to was in Grand Rapids, but not sure how many were left at that point or if the gang played the remaining shows.

A:

I actually haven't seen any footage from that. I should go look for some - anthony

Q:

Hey Anthony, Huge fan of your music, seen you guys (full band+solo) at least 15 times around the Philly area.

What's the song writing / album process like now compared to when you guys were a younger band? I imagine it's got to be a lot different since you are all living further away/out of town. Is the excitement still there, is it easy to get the guys together? Vancancy is my favorite Bayside album now, just ahead of Walking Wounded, <3

A:

it's not that easy to get everyone in the same room but we just do all of our writing remotely now. We spend a long time in the studio with vacancy just working out things that we would have worked out in rehearsal if we lived in the same state -anthony

Q:

Ant, first SA song that got your attention? Max, first Bayside song to get your attention?

A:

i saw Say Anything play at the Bowery Ballroom opening for Straylight Run and I distinctly remember as a writer being really inspired and intimidated by Belt. -anthony

Q:

Max... Would you still sell drugs to your little brothers friends if you ever became broke? Lol.

A:

at this point my brother's friends are mostly fairly religious israelis so i don't think i'd have much luck - mb

Q:

Hi max, how has married life affected your song writing? Would you say it's given you more inspiration/content to your song lyrics?

A: well, i was only single for our first record and met sherri by our third, so i think relationships have always informed our material, though it's more focused on my reaction to them. I have Perma to just endlessly praise Sherri which is kind of the easiest thing to do, but in Say Anything I try to come from a place that's more universal and can apply to someone who's not in love.

M
