OtherIAmA Former Medieval Times Princess AMA

May 3rd 2017 by Mausbarchen • 24 Questions • 62 Points

Hey guys! I was the Princess at Medieval Times for three years. Many shows, many photos, a couple calendar shoots and a national commercial spot as well. Anything you've always wanted to know? AMA!

Q:

Does it ever get tiring when people are eating and chatting and not listening to you and the king talk about the plot?

A:

Sometimes it did. Sometimes it didn't. I kind of went through phases working there where sometimes it was like "just because this is dinner theatre doesn't mean it can't be GOOD! I'm ACTING, dammit! Listen to me!" But then other days it was definitely just a job with a paycheck and I couldn't care less if people were listening. It was more annoying when I would hear people say afterwards that they didn't understand what was happening, and it was just because they weren't paying attention.

Q:

As a princess and being royalty, did you feel superior to common Medieval Times wenches? Did you feel like Kate Middlet, almost?

A:

Oh god, there was definitely a "High School" popularity complex that went on at least at the location I worked at. I'm not gonna lie, I felt pretty badass walking around in the dress and the cape swaying around doing whatever I wanted while everyone else worked behind counters. The princesses had a reputation for being snotty. I tried to be nice to everybody, but I'd be lying if it didn't get to my head sometimes. But a lot of the wenches were also my really good friends, so it didnt really matter. They're just costumes. Plus, the wenches make more money.

YOU try walking around in a tiara where literally everyone calls you "your highness" and see what kind of complex that gives you. 😂

Q:

Which kingdom has the finest mead?

A:

Leon. The bad guys always have the best alcohol.

Q:

How did they have Pepsi a few hundred years ago in Spain?

A:

Suspension of medieval disbelief.

Q:

What is your job now?

A:

I'm a professional makeup artist!

Q:

How often are you on reddit and what are your favorite subreddits?

A:

Seriously all the time lurking but I just created an account because I wanted to participate. Usually the Survivor subreddit because I'm obsessed with that show. The niceguys thread is usually pretty hilarious. Usually I just search for random shit.

Q:

Usually the Survivor subreddit

One of us, one of us, one of us! Were you as sad as I was when Sandra went home?

A:

Yessss I thought for a second she was gonna pull it off! #QueenStaysQueen. The boot order of this season is INSANE. Excited for tonight because Wednesday is the best night of the week! Fingers crossed Sierra's next. She's getting cocky.

Q:

Red knight or blue knight?

A:

Red! Blue and yellow are so far away from the stage.

Q:

Are you a real Princess?

A:

I almost considered putting Princess as my occupation on my tax return one year, but I played it safe and went with "show cast." I'll leave that up to you.

One time I had a little girl cross her arms and yell at me, "I don't like you. You're fake!" Her younger brother then proceeded to lecture her, and it was a pretty entertaining back and forth for a few minutes. He was totally on my side. I remember he whispered in my ear, "I don't think you're fake. I think you're nice."

Q:

Finally a good use of mlady

A:

Ha. Well, I don't live in the castle anymore. Just an apartment. It's been a few years since I quit but I will try the dress on for you if that's what your heart desires to see this late Tuesday night. Give me a minute.

Q:

What is your favorite Jim Carrey movie and why?

A:

How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Because, Holiday Classic.

Q:

Is the commercial you were in on YouTube so we can see it?

A:

It is on YouTube. Just search Medieval Times commercial and I'm sure you'll find it. However, the stage is seen for LITERALLY half a second. We spent two very long days filming a million things and they made it into 30 seconds.

Q:

What perks did you get from Working there?

A:

Telling people I worked there and getting a big "OMG THAT'S SO COOL" reaction.

Performing on stage was personally satisfying to me because I didn't think I would get to perform again after high school theatre.

Feeling fulfilled when I would seriously make a little kid's day. And I don't even like kids.

Friends and family basically in for free if not damn close to free. Choice of seats, free photos.

There weren't a whole lot of tangible perks, if that's what you mean. Free food and a paycheck? Haha.

Q:

What was the funniest thing you witnessed while working?

A:

I saw the falcon land on a lady's plate one time. It probably wasn't funny to her though.

Most of the funny moments I remember involve the other actor's improv-ing lines. I had some really funny cast members that would just crack everybody up. One time our chancellor did a whole scene in an exaggerated impression of one of our knights. Not something the audience would catch on to, but for us it was hilarious.

We had one horse that would just do whatever the fuck he wanted. He would get loose in the back area and bolt into the arena and just make it into a free for all trying to catch him. He was...special.

Lots happened behind the scenes. The knight department was a really funny group, and they were pretty much always goofing off backstage.

I didn't witness it, but in the last show script there was a flashback scene where the princess is saying goodbye to the prince down in the sand in the middle of the arena. The real princess is in a blackout on the dais giving a voice over to a body double who is wearing a cloak and a hood down in the sand. Usually it was a tech girl wearing the hood, but for one show somebody forgot they were supposed to be the body double. So, naturally, the knights sent out their biggest guy (Like 6'5 big) in the fake princess dress to be the body double with the prince.

Q:

Do the horses in the show have names?

A:

Of course! All of them have names. Most of them are in Spanish.

Q:

What is the funniest thing that happened during a show?

A:

Scroll down, someone already asked!

Q:

What is the best medieval music?

A:

The Game of Thrones soundtrack.

Q:

What did you learn about people from the job?

A:

I'm not sure what I learned, but I met some really interesting people while working there. There were so many people where you seriously thought, "is this a real person?" Just because they were almost a caricature of a stereotype they looked like. Seriously some of the nicest people too. I guess you could say I learned that often the people with the least "conforming" appearance are sometimes the best and most interesting people to make acquaintance with. We were a castle of misfits.

Q:

What did you learn about yourself from the job?

A:

Getting the job furthered my belief in myself that I really can do anything I set my mind to.

I learned that I can tolerate children a lot more than I thought I could.

Q:

Do you know the princess who replaced you?

A:

Yup! We were good friends. While I was there there were usually between 2-4 princesses that switched off shows.

Q:

How tall are you?

A:

5'4

Q:

What is the best place to sit for a show attendee?

A:

I liked front row. At my castle, red & yellow and black & white are in the middle so you can see everything. Green and red are next to the dais so you can see what's happening on the dais as well. I wasn't a fun of blue or yellow because they're too far away from everything.

Q:

I remember being here a long time ago as a little kid! You probably weren't there at the time. I enjoyed the soup. (don't know why that's all I remember lol). So, have you ever just wanted to go to a totally uninhabited island and just like chill for the summer?

A:

Probably not, I only left a few years ago! And all the time. I fantasize about quitting everything and moving to an island.

I also want to go to a totally uninhabited island and just like chill, à la survivor on CBS.

Q:

Do you think she'd risk the STDs he got while on a crusade?

Also, be honest, were you jealous?

A:

Lol. Yes.

I was not jealous. It's a miracle they weren't fired.
