I go under /u/nicgentile I build underground ISPs, CDNs and Data Centres in Africa that are censorship free. AMA.

I obviously can't share my real name, cause of the fuzz, but I build underground ISPs, CDNs, and Data Centres in Africa. We connect the unconnected, those who are not deemed financially viable by governments or operators, guys looking for a peaceful place to watch HD content cause they don't have access or can't afford video services like Netflix etc, that is censorship free. I recently posted my project on /r/homelab, and added bits more today and many people asked me to come do an AMA, so lets do this thing. Ask me anything.

P.S. Be mindful of what you say (not ask, you can ask anything), in my world, bad things happen to people like me who are basically rebellious. The monster is real here and I've already been nicked twice for this thing. Thanks.

Q:

How many years in prison would you get?

A:

Depends, but between 1 and 10 years.

Q:

When/why did you decide to do this?

A:

I was unemployed, internet and video in my country is still a very expensive thing to access, plus I don't watch cable/broadcast TV cause of all the censorship and misinformation that is there. I had the required skillset, I had worked for multinationals in Europe and Asia, though when it comes to computers, I'm self taught.

I started planning in 2012, waded though a ton of govt bureaucracy and paperwork, (which we lost anyway, but it served its purpose at the time) and only managed to put everything together last year i.e. money, equipment etc.

Q:

So where you live there's lots of censorship? Is it similar to the Chinese censorship? I'm also assuming you come from an English speaking country, since you speak English really well

A:

Not like Chinese censorship, but its getting there day by day.

I went to a British private school (I had a partial scholarship), then I dropped out of very many prestigious universities in many countries, I worked in London, and pretty much all over Europe and Asia. I graduated from an American Uni etc.... I have a partial British accent, to my horror, but it helps with the ladies, sometimes.....

Fan fact, I am also a writer who is published weekly in a regional daily print.

Q:

Wow, how much money do you make?

A:

Not a lot actually. ~$400.00 which covers my house rent (I live in a shoe box), food, and date money, plus many times I sacrifice it to cover my projects expenses. I'm broke all the time.

Q:

That sounds awful, best of luck to you! I'm a side note, you said earlier that you went to prestigious universities, did you ever get a full college education, and what did you major in?

A:

Its life. I'm done complaining about it. I just roll with the punches.

Yes, I have an International Business Degree (Entrepreneurship major). I have also read Law, but never handed in my final project and never sat the Bar so it doesn't count, Economics (that I realised was boring so I dropped out), and European History and Art (which I realised wouldn't do much for me so I dropped out). I also have an English qualification (majoring in Poetry, yes, I know) ;) ;) ;)

Q:

Hey nic you're realizing that you give away quite alot of info about yourself that could be used to potentially identify you and put you behind bars for, S you mentioned 1-10 years..

I dont mean anything in particular with this comment, just saying that people doing stuff governments doesnt approve of has been singeled out by this sort of information before dude.

A:

I've given out stuff I know ties in with other people who have followed my path, at least education wise. I've excluded country intentionally because I know our fuzz is looking for stuff explicitly marked with my country. As far as you know I could be in one of 53 countries, so that gives me some cover, plus I've covered my route to get here. I'm more worried about them finding me in my home country by finding info from my home country and not from outside. Have been doing stuff like this for years, and even when it went sideways twice, one I could elbow grease my way out of the situation, and secondly they were fairly clueless about what was really going on.

But then again it could go sideways and for me, being grabbed is an eventuality. Someone is bound to blab. It's something I've accepted. Go hard or go home, right? Also, I write under a nom de plume that is known by maybe 4 people and my family.
