Director / CrewIamA guy who's making a SCI-FI film in his garage for the last three years AMA!

Sep 4th 2017 by SliceOfLifeFilm • 14 Questions • 58 Points

Yo guys.. I'm Luka from Croatia.. Me and a couple of friends are making a short Blade Runner inspired film in our garage called Slice of Life. We are using only miniatures because that's much cooler than CGI, and here's how it looks in the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcDJCZrwkLw

We are also at the end of your Kickstarter campaign so you can check that out too: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sliceoflifefilm/slice-of-life-original-short-film-homage-to-blade?ref=5she70

Feel free to AMA about the project! Also, this is what I'm listening too right now. It's pretty good if you like rock. Mean solos going on here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv8_nSdnyuk&t

Q:

Great trailer! How many actors are involved?

A:

Thank you! Well only two main guys and the girl in the ad. And behind the camera there's only two of us :D

Q:

Your trailer looks amazing, much better than some high budget sci-fi movies. Also the usage of miniatures is kinda awesome. What made you decide to use miniatures and was it more difficult than using just CGI? Do you plan on making any more movies after this one, bigger projects maybe?

A:

I'm in love with the feel and look of miniatures and it's much more fun to stand in a room with real miniature city, than do it in CGI :) It was pretty hard to figure it all out though, as we had to teach ourselves how to light them and film them. But it's worth it! Oh, we have tons of ideas for feature films, let's hope we get the chance to make them! :)

Q:

How long will the end film be? Looks interesting. Would watch.

A:

It's a short, so about 20 minutes! Thanks a lot ;)

Q:

Favorite beer?

A:

hm... my own I guess. I made my own beer a couple of times, but failed 90% of the time, but when we got it right that was the most satisfying elixir I ever tasted! How bout you?

Q:

My favorite "go to" is great lakes Edmund Fitzgerald (Porter). When I'm feeling fancy, I'll go for a tailgate peanut butter stout or old Rasputin

A:

Oh ,so you're into dark beers? I' more of a lager person myself, although when we brew our own we brew IPA mostly.. Do you have lots of craft beers where you're from? Croatia is known by it's craft beers!

Q:

Yes... Love dark beers, but I'm getting more and more into ipas.

I'm fairly close to Nashville, TN, USA which had several very well known breweries!

I'd love to try some Croatian brews though!

A:

Dude, if you come to Cro, there's so much craft beers to try you wouldn't get sober for a week, hahaha.. My friend has a brewery, and we are actually planning to make a Slice of Life beer, dark beer.. Kinda like signature beer for the film.. It would be a cool perk for the Kickstarter too, but they don't allow offering beers as perks.. too bad

Q:

I'm barely sober for a week as it is now! Lol.

Really looking forward to the film. I'm a huge Blade Runner fan!

A:

Woooah.. Me too bud! I'm on my third beer as we speak! <3 Who needs Blade Runner when we have beer ! :D

Q:

What's your favourite sandwich ?

A:

Oh!!! Great question! A toast with ham and cheese, spread a little butter on the top while it's still hot, and the butter melts, and then it's amazing!!!!!

Q:

First off this sounds awesome. What sci-fi films are your favorites? I'm always looking for some good films!

A:

Thanks!!! :D Hm... Well Blade Runner of course :D But I love Moon (duncan jones), he also used miniatures... Alien/s of course.. SILENT RUNNING is pretty cool. Oh yeah... Outland!

Q:

What's your favorite Sci-Fi movie? And did you like the movie Splice?

A:

Well favorite should be Blade Runner of course, haah.. You just can't compete with the world Ridley created for that one... Soooo many details! I did watch Splice, but had to remind myself just now what movie that was, so I guess it didn't make that much of an impression...

Q:

what are the best SF movies or shows from Croatia in your opinion?

A:

hahhah, none! Well, we do kinda have "some" sci-fi films, but here's the thing: what I consider a TRUE sci-fi has to be visually appealing... It should be in space, OR in some space station, OR in the city of FUTURE.. you know - it has to have some futuristic twist. Sci-fi's that take place in the woods for example (like Postman with Kevin Costner for example ).. well, I find it hard to consider it a TRUE sci-fi.. And all Croatian sci-fi's are like that, due to budget restrictions of course, but also due to creative restrictions too. We made the city with junk in our basement, so it's possible I guess :D

Q:

well, in that case, what comedies or horror movies from Croatia do you think are the best?

A:

oh boy... you have to understand Croatia is pretty weird.. Here people make mostly social dramas... There is TOTAL lack of genre films. So... damn.. you really got me there... There's no recent ones, but I like this one.. a bit older: Ritam zlocina (1981) - (Rythm of the crime).. Dont know if you'll find it tho...

Q:

Can you add my Reddit name to the credits?

heheheh

A:

haha if you come and help us film it, no problemo! :D

Q:

Hey Luka, what 3 songs would you use in "Slice of Life"?
