As the title states. English is my first language and I consider myself to be generally not-stupid. TGA is a medical condition where you forget where and who you are for 24 hours or less. It was scarier than I could ever describe. At this point, the severity has greatly decreased and I am mostly back to normal. I am trying to use this time to document everything I can about this mindset. Please AMA, as I would love to have this record to look back on when I am lucid.
to add some more info: A few days ago I started having some weird feelings. I texted a friend at like 2am saying "do you ever feel like you've had all the cards taken from you? like somehow you've been given a chance to "redo" something in your life but you don't know what it is? I'm starting in this moment fresh somehow. I don't really feel like I've lived this life up to this point. I'm starting fresh from this moment and I have no idea what it all means." Turns out that was one of the first symptoms of TGA which is the craziest shit I have ever heard in my entire life and i thought it was only a movie plot.
Last night I went to a party with my boyfriend of about a year. It was a normal day. We usually eat vegetarian but it was a special occasion so we split a very yummy hamburger. I took a few hits of a pre-rolled club joint that was from a friend-of-a-friend. Nothing abnormal, smoking pot helps with my anxiety, I tried it about 9 months ago and I have liked it a lot. Anyways, I randomly threw up on myself in the car on the way to run an errand. I only partially made it out the window. After that, I asked my boyfriend "Why are my pants wet?" and he said "you threw up on them." and I said "throw up? what's that?" and he said "vomit." and I said "I don't know what that is." and then we had that conversation hundreds of more times. over and over. He became very scared and we went to the ER.
EDIT: Did you know TGA only has a 6% chance of coming back? It can be triggered by really good sex, cold water, stress, and more. For me, It was emotional stress. I've had a stressful few months and I didn't know it was important to self care and monitor. I tried to do things right, but I did a lot of things wrong. I'm 23.
Transient Global Amnesia = World Temporarily Forgotten
tl;dr I have Transient Global Amnesia, much like Dory from Finding Nemo, or Ava from Grey's Anatomy. I think it's almost over but I'm still having confusion.
I write far less than I should, and when I do the thing that always hangs me up is dialogue. Any tips or tricks for constructing engaging dialogue between characters? Anything from an intimate one-on-one to large scenes with multiple characters.
Anything would be a help. Know how people say "you're your own worst critic?" Well, I can sometimes look at a passage and be happy enough with it. Still knowing there's work that could be done, but that it's in a decent place for the moment.
I never feel that way about my dialogue. It always feels somehow weird to me. So much so that I was once tempted to try writing a whole book without a single line of actual dialogue, just covering it with prose.
Did you learn anything surprising or unexpected during these interactions?
Have you investigated farms yourself? If so, where and what was it like?
How is this better than Steam, where I can get any Indie game I want for a couple of bucks every summer and winter, then have them forever?
Hello! I've only recently started watching Battlestar Galactica. Was it annoying having to act so overly-seductive all the time? My husband laughs when I protrude my chin out and go "Gaiussss."
Outside my house, there seems to be one or two hummingbirds guarding all of our hummingbird feeders. Is there anything we can do to help more hummingbirds have access to sugar water? And is there anything we can do to attract more hummingbirds?
What are some unexpected difficulties you've experienced due to this?
Why is your username a credit card number ?
I was mugged once upon a time and my brain reacted with TGA. I don't remember anything about the next 4-5 hours. I just remember the doctor telling me it was the most profound case he had ever seen. I was resetting every 10-15 seconds. I freaked out my roommate when I showed up at the apartment and didn't know how I got there or what month it was, and asked him the same questions over and over.
I haven't had any reoccurences, and I hope you don't, either! Do you remember the previous weeks leading up to the TGA? What's the first thing you DO remember after it started?
I started writing better dialog when I remembered my old D&D sessions and started actually role-playing scenes in my head.
In order to do this, I had to make generic character sheets. Never more than 1 page, because this is about getting a full character concept at a glance. Every character that appears in multiple portions of the book for extended interaction with the main character(s) gets a sheet.
Now you can put your characters 'in a room' together. You're thinking like they think. You know their education, their beliefs, and the events that shaped them. You know how well they know who they're talking too, and how much they trust the other people. So what would they actually say?
That's how I improved. I'm sure that it would be different for everyone, but give it a try.
Absolutely!!! Despite what you may have read in the numerous press articles about me converting KKK members, I NEVER set out to convert anyone. I simply set out to ask a question I had formed in my mind as a kid: "How can you hate me when you don't even know me?" Growing up, we all are told, "A tiger doesn't change its stripes, a leopard doesn't change its spots," etc. I believed that and I didn't think anyone was going to change, so that wasn't my initial goal. I just wanted the answer to my question. But over time, though repeated interactions with various KKK members around the country, some of them began questioning their own beliefs as a result of their interacations and conversations with me. Then they began quitting, and I was astounded. Exposure and one-on-one dialogue is the KEY to solving a lot of issues in this country, not just racial ones. We live in echo chambers in which we surround ourselves with people who will reflect back to us, the very same thing we say to them. Therefore we block out anything from the outside as being inferior to what we learn in our little bubbles. I like traveling outside the bubble. Even people with good intentions, tend to shut out those who may hold different opinions. I am willing to listen all all.
Yes, I have. I've been to dozens of factory farms and many slaughterhouses - both in the United States and other countries. It's really hard to describe what these places are like. There is suffering everywhere. I've had animals die in my arms. I've pulled animals out of manure pits who were drowning. I've seen animals being dragged to their deaths and having their throats slit, all in front of other animals who watched. It's heartbreaking and traumatizing. You can see much of this in MFA's undercover investigation footage. But what you don't experience when watching the videos are the smells. Factory farms are filthy places. The stench of feces is overpowering. It stings your throats and burns your eyes. It's because of these personal experiences that I'm so passionate about ending factory farming in my lifetime.
What I like to say is that we're not trying to replace Steam or individual purchases by any means - we want to be complementary to Steam, both for gamers and for developers.
One of our main missions is discoverability - developers whose games deserve to be found will be easy to find on Jump, and gamers don't have to sift through all the shovelware on Steam to find quality indie games. We let both sides find each other, and then the business model is very pure as well since we pay out based on play time, so basically I play your game and you make money.
We also wanted the price of Jump to be approachable, so for $9.99/month you get our base library (60+ games), plus roughly 10 new games per month. Even if you only liked 1 of our 10 new games per month, you'd still be paying essentially the same price as 1 indie game on Steam ($9.99) and getting 9 other games you can also poke around in guilt-free (no post-Steam-sale remorse).
It got a little tiresome by the end of season one/beginning of season two because it was only Head Six in the story at that point. But with my other characters that weren't overly seductive, it balanced out for me.
So Males are really good at patrolling one or two feeders, making it so no other Hummingbirds use those feeders. Putting out more feeders will decrease the competition, so he can no longer dominate the feeder. Or separating the feeders so they can't be seen by the individual can also work.
Finding out I have minor scoliosis that I can't stop thinking could have been dealt with had my dad taken me to a doctor; not being able to check items out of a library; being unable to get fingerprinted for a job; being turned down at schools because I don't possess a photo ID; and having to find out the court documents and procedures involved in obtaining a birth certificate where information is limited.
EDIT: The most unexpected difficulty was knowing when and how to approach an authority on the matter and if they would actually help. I ended up calling the police on my father and after they tried to lecture me and my brothers, I told them everything, and they called CPS.
It's Erdogan's personal credit card #. Everyone please buy whatever you want.
Woah. That's definitely a stress... a 10-15 second reset sounds like hell. I'm so sorry :( I do remember the previous weeks. I guess the first thing I remember was staring at the x10000rpm on the dashboard. I was thinking "what car am I in... who is that note to..." and I remember being cognizant that it was abnormal for my boyfriend to be clutching my arm and elbow while I walked, and I noticed that he seemed to be really scared but I didn't know why. After that, I remember walking into the ER and everything being super bright and there were two security guards looking at my boyfriend smiling. After that, there was an Indian doctor who looked at my boyfriend and said "freaky, right???"
Why should people interested in helping animals support Mercy For Animals over other animal rights and animal protection organizations like PETA, the World Wildlife Fund, or the Humane Society?
developers whose games deserve to be found
What determines this criteria?
Hi Tricia! How did you get into the mindset of Six? Would you have chosen a different ending for her and Gaius?
My 5 yo daughter named the little guy who fights of all the other hummingbirds “Guarder”.
What do you foresee for the future of Kurds living in Turkey?
A robotics and programming job. I remember them saying it was a process everyone over 18 goes through though.
It's not looking great. Every day, Kurds are arrested, imprisoned, beaten, raped, tortured and executed for things as simple as speaking Kurdish with their families or singing Kurdish songs. The Turkish state has destroyed over 3,000 Kurdish villages I could continue with the list of atrocities committed against them but it would take all day.
The one bit of optimism I have is that people are becoming more and more aware of Erdogan/Turkish state crimes, and I think that soon the whole world will call on Turkey to stop what they are doing or face repercussions. Turkey is badly losing its war against Kurdish freedom fighters in the south. I think it will be a long, painful uphill battle for Kurds in Turkey to reclaim their rights, but I believe that it will happen some day.
Extremely horrifying. It was like hell. It was like being abducted by aliens and total sensory overwhelm. Everything was too bright and i could see everyone looking at me. I felt like they all knew somehting important that I didn't, and i knew whatever was happening really wasn't good. Thank you for your question
Hi Nathan - Congrats on the release of your book. I have two questions:
Has industry/farmers responded to the release at all?
Will the proceeds from book sales go to MFA?
Thanks in advance!
Who determines which indie games are "quality" ones?
What happens if a developer offers you a buttload of money to add their game to your service, even if it's not getting positive feedback?
Hey Tricia! Still to this day, i'm showing more and more people Battlestar Galactica, and every single one are citing Caprica Six as one of their favorite characters. Almost 8 years later and people still love every part of this show, so thank you for helping make it a reality :)
My question is: Given your involvement with a lot of different mediums of Science Fiction, what was it like going from a character like Six to a different kind of AI character like EDI of Mass Effect 2 and 3?
Thanks again for all you've done, and i can't wait to see what the future holds. So say we all!
How do you get such a nice, even black background in so many of your up-close shots? I wonder that every time I see one of your Instagram photos-- you're one of my favorite accounts, as a young ecologist and photographer.
Where do you plan to go from here job-wise and education-wise? Since you've lived off the grid this long is it possible to get a birth certificate and a social number?
Every day, Kurds are arrested, imprisoned, beaten, raped, tortured and executed for things as simple as speaking Kurdish with their families or singing Kurdish songs.
Is there a source on this? I have no idea about the situation but some numbers would be great.
We'll never take a payment FROM a developer to put their game up (nor would anyone do that at this point, haha), and we'll never compromise our quality bar for money. We're here to help indies find more visibility and fans.
See my above comment on what I meant by "quality" too - we have 3 criteria, of which a game must meet at least 1, to be included on Jump.
Voicing EDI was way different than portraying Six. With Mass Effect, there was no script so I had no idea what was going on. I would show up at the studio, head into the booth, put on the headphones and a line would appear on the computer screen and the record button would come on. I'd read it a few times and then another line would appear. Literally the first time I would see a line, and read it, it was being recorded. I really still have no idea what the story is.
It depends on the photos but usually using multiple corss angle flashes in a very low setting with very larger diffusers, or using specialized black felt that counters the flash. So usually I'm lugging a lot of gear into the field, everything I photograph is in the field, not a lab or anything.
Education-wise, I started an online program, Edgenuity, through an adult school that let me in without a photo ID on the condition that I can't graduate until I possess one. Job-wise, I need a social security number before I even begin.
It is possible. I had an Order Establishing Fact of Birth (VS108) signed by a judge and I'm working on sending it to the California Department of Public Health - Vital Records to be made official. From there, I'm using my Medi-Cal benefits card—which I got from my social worker helping me get temporary health insurance—as ID, the VS108, and a copy of my birth certificate to get assigned a social security number. Finally, I'll be able to work and graduate.
It sounds like the key to getting these people to change their mind is in getting to know you, a black man, as a person. This reflects a lack of any meaningful prior exposure to and empathy with the black experience. While it's heartening to see so many change after getting to know you, it does leave me curious - do you think anything similar to your process could be replicated by white anti-racist activists, or is the very fact of your blackness so crucial to the result that white people would have to take a different approach?
That is good question. What type of jobs would be in an industry that produces clean meat? Slaughterhouse jobs seem like one of the hardest way to make a living. All that blood and shit and what not. Will clean meat be an industry that seems to screw over workers in the same way?
Here in central Va., the hummers were late arrivals by a month it seemed. Now they appear to be leaving early. What's going on? Mother Nature, I'm sure?
OP have you heard about Khan Academy? They have a TON of classes in video form in many different subjects online for free along with practice questions. I would recommend you using them to try to catch up on certain subjects, and if you plan on getting a GED they could really help you get ready for the tests. Best of luck.
I think every little bit helps. It is crucial that we all, regardless of our skin color, encourage our friends to make friends wih others who may not share our skin color and discourage our friends from engaging in discriminatory behavior. Most importantly, before we are Black or White or anything else, we are human beings. We are Americans. We need to be respected as such first and foremost, then the trivial things like skin color will matter less and less.
You're right, working in a slaughterhouses is horrible work. It's one of the most dangerous jobs in the country and also leads to high rates of PTSD for workers. Clean meat production would be the exact opposite. Since there are no live animals - who kick, scream and defecate while being killed in slaughterhouses - clean meat production not only provides major benefits to workers, but also food safety.
It seem's like a lot of people are telling me about erratic migrations of Ruby-thoarts this year, I'm sure the strange weather effecting their feeding sources has something to do with it. I will be very interested to see what numbers look like from banding this year, and my own observations of them in Costa Rica come November
I love Khan Academy!
Were there any preconceptions you had about the Klan that turned out to be wrong once you actually began to make contact with and get to know some of its members?
When you first started Mercy For Animals when you were a teenager, did you have heroes that you looked up to and inspired you to do this work or were you on kind of on your own? If you did have heroes back then, are they still your heroes today? Who are some of your biggest inspirations?
How does Hyper jump affect load times? Do you have any metrics?
Just got through watching Ascension, any word on the possibility of it being picked up again?!?! I would love to see more of Christa's story.
My father in law has a feeder that has been frequented by an all white hummingbird, how rare are "albino" hummingbirds?
How do you keep your hair looking so glorious?
If you were magically put into a leadership role in the Kurdish independence movement, what would you do at this point?
That was my first guess.
Yes there were. Excellent question, thanks. As much as I hate to admit it, I was guilty of the same thing many of them are. I was predisposed to thinking they were all alike before meeting them. I came to find out that a Klansman or Klanswoman, is not stamped out of a standard cookie cutter. They come from all walks of life, educational and socio-economic backgrounds. Most importantly, I found out that their beliefs can change for the better.
I always admired social justice leaders - such as MLK and Gandhi. I drew inspiration from their commitment to non-violence and ability to win hearts and minds, which helped change the world. My biggest inspirations comes from animals themselves. I'm most moved by acts of bravery, courage, and love exhibited by animals imprisoned on factory farms. Stories of animals escaping slaughterhouses. Fighting to survive. Freeing themselves from cages, then assisting other animals by freeing them, too. There is a battle happening every day on factory farms and in slaughterhouses. These precious animals are doing everything they can to escape oppression and win freedom.
The benchmark we give is that most games on Jump will load in under 60 seconds on a 15mpbs connection (my sad home connection speed), although several of our games load much faster than that. We accomplish this with larger games by working with the developers to break up the game's assets into chunks so we only pull down what we need to your computer as you're playing. You don't have to wait every time there's a new chunk, either - it's smart about pulling what you need when/before you need it.
Also, in October, we'll be adding a custom caching system which will let you choose a set amount of storage space (between 0-50GB I believe) to dedicate to Jump games. What that'll do is store games that you've played recently on your hard drive, so that the next time you play them, if they're still on your HDD, they'll load from your HDD instead of from our servers (something like 4-5x faster). No data usage for you on those either!
No, it's done. The sets were massive and would have to be rebuilt.
They are not very common and have caused quite a stir in the ornithological field. Albino Hummingbirds seem to draw in large crowds to see them. Was this the famous one out west this summer, I believe in California?
Oh my gosh, thank you. It does what it does.
Hm, that's a very tough question.
My main priority would probably be to get large foreign powers on our side. I would attempt to convince the US, UN and NATO that recognition of the Kurdish people is vitally important to stability in the Middle East, and would explain that Kurds are generally a more moderate and secular community compared to their neighbors. My being an American would enable me to have an easier dialogue with US/UN officials, and I could use that to convince these world powers to use their strength to protect Kurdish people.
If any of these religions are right, I'm pretty sure it's not going to be the one made by the dude who was fucking teenagers
What was the toughest meeting you ever had with a KKK member? Have you lost friends or family contact because of your choice to have these meetings? Thank you for time and your big heart.
Any evidence/videos of animals rescuing other animals?
I have met some who engaged in horrific crimes, including murder. Some have even gotten away with it, while others have gone to prison for it and still show no remorse. You look into their eyes and you can instantly tell, your life is in their crosshairs.
Another tough meeting is when I meet families and their are young children involved. You don't have to be a psychic to predict that child's future. It's like going to a drug-infested ghetto and seeing a mother who is a prostitute and the father is either in prison or selling drugs on the street. There's a small child in the home. Whiel there is always the rare exception, you know there is a better chance that kid will not finish school, will have an arrest record in his teens, and may be dead before the age of 30.
When you meet with some of these people and you can predict these things, that is VERY scary.
There are people who will not associate with me and who shun me because of my association with KKK members or neo-Nazis. But no, I have not lost any friends or family, because my friends and family already know that I'm crazy!!! :)
Our undercover investigators have witnessed pigs on factory farms figuring out how to unlock and open the doors to their cages, then going around and unlocking and freeing other pigs.
How has the movement changed since you first became involved in it? Was there a particular time where the animal rights movement experienced a big boom in growth or has it been steadily increasing over time?
What measures are being put in place to prevent/thwart piracy after the games are on the hard drive? Namely when all "chunks" of a less-than-50GB title are all present in that space?
Perhaps each chunk is independently signed and auth'd similar to 2FA schemes?
Hi Tricia, I just wanted to say that the Carla arc was my favorite in Burn Notice.
You also did an amazing job as Black Cat in Spectacular Spider-man. If given the opportunity would you be interested in voicing the character again?
What was the most awe-inspiring moment you've had while in the field?
Please tell me you picked some fantastic middle name like Magic or Ulysses or Thundercock.
Hello KidGrizz, I have been in many unsafe situations and have had to deal with not only threats, but also attempts on carrying out those threats. However fortunately, nothing too serious has happened and in a couple of cases, those who threatened me, are now friends. There are those who still pose a threat and will probably do so till they pass away.
Overall, the movement has become much more focused on farmed animals, which I think is really good and important. Farmed animals are, hands down, the group of animals abused and killed in the largest numbers and oftentimes facing the most extreme abuse. It's good to see the animal movement focusing more on their plight and bringing about change for them. I also think the movement has become more focused on effectiveness - using data to drive decisions, refining its messaging, and getting more involved in the world of business and politics to drive change for animals. The movement has also become much more mainstream - thanks in part to the rise of social media and big documentaries.
Without giving too much away, have a few hooks that get embedded into each game that allow them to only be run in the Jump environment, so trying to load a game outside of Jump means the game would just hang/freeze. We'll add a lot more, such as device authentication per-account, etc. in the near future.
Thanks, I had fun with her. Would have loved to get a little more inside look into Carla though. Was just starting to see a crack in her when Fiona shot her. Absolutely would be interested in voicing black cat again.
I think the first time I went to the tropics, it still stands out. I had wanted to go to the rainforest since I was a little kid. The first morning I opened the door, a toucan flew into a tree and parrots were squawking loudly, I knew this is what I wanted to see all the time.
No such luck. That would have been funny though. I chose Quin after my dad.
What do you consider your successful endeavor?
What is the best piece of advice would you give to people about stopping this issue?
I'm confused... do you pay the indie developers to be on your platform or do they have to pay you to be on the platform?
Question re: Lucifer. Will Charlotte be as significant to story line this season?
What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I'm most proud of our undercover investigators and the results of their work. They sacrifice so much to go undercover and do this difficult work, but their investigations have resulted in the introduction of legislation, reforms of major Fortune 500 food companies, and have informed literally tens of millions of people about the cruelties of factory farms.
My advice for anyone working to stop this issue would be to think about how you can best contribute to the cause. If you're an artist or videographer, use your creativity to make eye-catching images and videos. If you're in IT, help nonprofits develop great websites and apps to help people reduce their meat consumption. If you're a writer, submit op-eds and articles to media outlets.
But also give serious thought to how best to use your time and energy to bring about the greatest reduction in suffering for animals. They need us to think strategically. For example, at MFA we focus a lot on reducing consumption of chicken and fish, since these animals are abused in the highest number--so getting one person (or institution) to reduce chicken/fish consumption will spare far more animals than someone reducing their beef/milk consumption.
We'll actually pay developers an advance on revenue (case-by-case basis) to help reduce the risk of porting to Jump since we're still new and our business model is relatively new to gaming, too. Once their game is live, 70% of our monthly net revenue is paid out to developers, and it's split up based on how much play time each game gets. We definitely don't charge money to bring your game to the service!
Charlotte is not in the first few episodes, but then comes back with an interesting story line. "Welcome Back Charlotte Richards" was really fun for me to play. Overall though, no, I don't think she'll have as significant of a role as Mom, since she's no longer the mother of Lucifer.
The whole thing is so damn shady I'm not sure what to think. I don't know if it was staged, but it kind of gives me 1933-Reichstag-vibes.
Erdoğan's claim that Gülen was involved is dubious. Erdoğan's political game is to blame everything on either the PKK or Gülen when he loses his tenuous grasp on power. German intelligence is doubtful that Gülen was involved in any way, and considering Germany has found Turkish state infiltration of their police and the Turkish government has spied on German politicians, that's saying a lot.
I do know that if the state wasn't involved, they at least knew about it well in advance. I wouldn't be surprised if later intelligence was uncovered that showed that the government was somehow involved in deeper levels.
I literally just keep reading your question over and over, haha. It's so great.
I don't have a question, but it's really admirable what you've done. I'm going to check out your music, I just wanted to say thank you for making a huge impact on Earth.
Building community is no small feat, and you're bridging gaps that I and many others have thought impossible. As an often selfish person, it's inspiring and humbling to see what you've dedicated your time to doing. Thanks for helping the species! We need all the help we can get.
Once someone has adopted a plant-based diet, what are some of the best things that ordinary people can do to support the work that Mercy For Animals is doing?
Is putting sugar water in a hummingbird feedto attract them to my garden a good thing for them or am I just giving them the human equivalent of a ton of birthday cake?
What's your most exciting experience been in the field?
What is your favorite TV show and movie? Were you allowed to watch cartoons growing up?
I know there are different groups such as PKK, PYD, YPG, KRG, KDP. I’ve seen some of them called “terrorists” by Turkish supporters and honestly it’s a bit confusing as an outsider to distinguish between these groups. Would you consider any of them not inline with the good intentions of the Kurds as a whole, or using questionable tactics?
Pistachio's good, but I prefer mint chocolate chip. It shares many of the same qualities imo.
There are so many ways. You can volunteer your time with the organization by passing out leaflets, tabling, interning, joining us ad demonstrations, and more. You can also join out Hen Heroes team, which works to convince major food providers to get egg-laying hens out of cruel cages. This group of advocates have helped get over 100 million hens out of cages that are so small the birds can't even spread their wings, walk, perch, or engage in basic natural behaviors. And, of course, you can make a donation to MFA :) We are funded entirely by gifts from supporters.
This is the normal way people attract them, they are usually searching out for sources that give them similar nutrients, similar to sugar water. So you're providing a source of food, which can be vital in some areas, depending on your location.
My favorite TV shows are Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Farscape. My favorite movies are Blade Runner and Grease. I was allowed to watch Drawn Together growing up.
Oh man, so I'll try and tl;dr it. Bear with me.
PKK = Kurdistan Workers Party. Been around since the 70s and originated in Turkey. The leader and founding member of PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, has been imprisoned for 18 years. Turkey managed to use their power to get them on the NATO and US terror lists, and now many countries are regretting that decision, such as Belgium.
PYD = Democratic Union Party. The majority political party within the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (also called Rojava in Kurdish) Formed in 2003, but suppression kept them on the periphery until YPG started making gains against ISIS.
YPG = People's protection units. Armed militia, mostly Kurds but also Arabs and other minority groups, in Northern Syria/Rojava. They have made immense strides against ISIS.
KRG = Kurdistan Regional Government. Semi autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan (Bashur). Controlled by the KDP and PUK parties, which have roots in the tribal politics of the area.
KDP = political party within KRG. KRG is governed by PUK party, affiliated with Talebani, and the KDP political party, which is controlled by Massoud Barzani, who is closely allied with Erdogan. You can probably guess how I feel about KDP.
oh my god, have you ever had talenti mint gelato? the mediterranean mint is mind-blowing. the chocolate is really delicate so you don't have to stop enjoying how it's melting to crunch it
Mr. Davis, thank you for your hard work and bravery over the years as an educator. My question for you is something that I struggle with often: How do you connect, communicate, and/or educate with someone whose views are so virulently different from your own?
Hey there, Nathan!
What advice do you have for new activists experiencing social anxiety related to outreach work?
I'm so thankful you're doing an AMA! Thank you for reaching out to the world for change. <3
Exactly what I thought... AFK games like Clicker Heroes have quite a big advantage when it comes to play time, but does it deserve more income?
Or games that have a Client/Server architecture, making people leave the game always open(for exemple Starbound, which I got 200h+ within 3 weeks because I was hosting our small game server), wouldn't it falsely increase a developper's revenue?
Hey Tricia! What's your favorite brand of toaster?
Also, I read one of your articles in a dog magazine at a vet office last year. What's the craziest thing your pets have done?
Can you tell us what your time in YPG was like and what conditions the YPG fought (and continue to fight) against?
How did you leave YPG? Did you just leave or is there a official process for leaving?
Feel free not to answer this one, how did a former YPG fighter return to the US? Are you a citizen of the US? A US citizen cannot join YPG without consequences, so I imagine you are not a citizen?
What assistance is ACTUALLY making it to the YPG from the US? Did you ever see any form of aid from the the US? I understand we provide fire support but what about equipment and water?
And lastly, what kinds of G-men came to talk to you after the incident with security?
Talenti is awesome. I love the salted caramel flavor.
Thank you very much. The BEST tool I have found is knowledge. Learn as much as you can about the person whose views are so virulently different from your own. Even sit in the privacy of your room and take that person's position and argue in his favor with yourself. Often times these people who let me know they DID NOT like me, very often respected me, because of my knowledge of their position. I often knew as much if not more about them and their beleif system and their organization than they did. That garnered me respect. Today, some of those same virulent people have become my BEST friends, believe it or not.
I love this question! I'm an introvert, so public speaking, media interviews, and other forms of outreach doesn't come naturally for me. But over the years I've done them all. In many ways, outreach work has helped me grow as a human being. It has helped push me into doing things that I naturally wouldn't do and in the processes has helped bring me out of my shell and meet some incredible people. So, my advice would be to try it. It might be uncomfortable at first, but oftentimes the best growth in life happens when you're uncomfortable. If you aren't ready for that, there are lots of other forms of advocacy work that you can do that doesn't involve being out in public. You can write letters, make vegan foods, edit videos, make thought provoking art, etc. There are a million ways to help animals that will fit your personality, available time, and passion.
We check for all these things and curate the content as well to make sure no one can "game" our payout system. It's against our rules of conduct for developers.
No favorites of anything.
When my first two cats were little, they were chasing each other at 4:30am and knocked over a side table. It had wrought iron legs with curls at the bottom. Bella ran through it, knocked it over and got her head stuck - like a kid with a stairwell bannister or something - and we couldn't get her back out. Tried to pry it open a bit with a large pliers (I was holding her body with one hand and her head with the other while my boyfriend tried to pry it open. The pliers broke and sliced through my wrist down to the tendon. Wrapped up my wrist and called the doorman who had the janitor come in from Brooklyn to open the supply closet (now 5:30am) and he came up with a metal saw and hand sawed through 1" thick wrought iron (with Bella's little neck still inside). Took 45min but finally got her out. She seemed traumatized but fine so I took off to emergency to get stitched up. Then took her to the vet. She was fine, but 6month later I ended up having surgery on the tendon to remove scar tissue (it had cut into the sheath surrounding the tendon) so I could move my wrist properly again.
Time in the YPG was rough as you could expect in any conflict zone. The camaraderie was amazing, like nothing I've seen before. Right now they're limited by the embargo against them from both KRG (Iraqi Kurdistan) and Turkey. A lot of times vital resources cannot cross the borders.
I just left. My tour was over so I was dropped off in Kobanê and made my way out in the same way I entered.
I am a US citizen. I've had no problems upon return. I've been spoken to by customs, and by FBI twice. They haven't hassled me and have been very respectful. Most other American YPG I know haven't had much problem either. The story is different in places like U.K.
The coalition forces provide a lot of support to YPG included mortar and sniper teams, air strikes, MRAPs, weapons and ammunition, medical supplies and other vehicles. They were always around - US, French, UK. Many of them were advisors.
I was handcuffed, led to the basement and questioned by US Secret Service, NYPD, Marriott Security, and Turkish intelligence. Eventually I told them to get the Turkish guy out of the room or I wouldn't cooperate, as he was attempting to provoke myself and my friends and get our information. The US guys made him leave.
The FBI called me afterwards and asked what happened, as the FBI had visited my house a couple weeks ago after someone anonymously called and told them I was in ISIS. However I've never had any problem with the FBI and they seem to understand that any changes of terrorism are bogus.
I love pistachio! I had hazelnut chocolate chip gelato last night! I love ice cream :) that's a fun memory to think about, thank you for your question!
After you had broken the ice and gotten to know them, did you feel as if they were good people at heart and just misguided, or were they genuinely just nasty people?
I am really enjoying your book, thank you! How long before the industry realizes that "ag-gag" laws are completely counter-productive and stops trying to introduce them?
It's a dream of mine to hire them for a party and ask them to only play All-Star. No bathroom breaks, no water breaks, just 6 hours of All-Star, baby!
What convinced you to take the role of 6?
I've noticed that sometimes if a feeder is left out too long, it begins to develop mold. Is this mold harmful to hummingbirds? I don't keep a feeder, this was from a time when I house-sat for friends.
What is the unexpected upside of officially not existing that regular folk would never realise?
All of the above. There are many good, decent people, who due to lack of exposure and living in their own little echo chambers, foster this culture of superiority and us vs. them mentality. Once coming to know other people who are not in their circle of friends, I saw an expanding of their horizons and some became receptive to, and acceptive of, those they once considered inferior. But make no mistake about it, there are those who are truly nasty and there will be no changing them.
Hopefully now. Ag-gag laws have really given a black eye to the meat industry. They have exposed to the world that the meat industry has a lot to hide and is willing to go to really extreme lengths to keep their cruel practices hidden. Also, a number of the ag-gag laws that were passed have now been struck down in court for being unconstitutional (violation of freedom of speech). But the battle wages on. MFA continues to fight ag-gag bills around the country. We must stay vigilant.
I saw them at a small club gig here in Pasadena a few months ago. They were well aware that's what we were all there to see. Decent show surprisingly though!
I loved the script. Plus it had emmy/oscar nominated headliners (Eddie and Mary). And...I was a brand new actor with almost no credits. With a script that good, it was a no brainer.
So yes mold is not a good sign, also Hummingbirds will no longer visit the feeder after a day or two if you don't switch out the sugar water. They don't enjoy cloudy looking sugar water, I know quite picky of them.
This may be asking a lot, but can you provide with some bullet points of things that we need to listen to in order to prevent people from turning to racism and what are the most effective way to act or react?
If you had to put a timeline on the end of factory farming, or at least a huge reduction of it like a 90% cut in the US, when do you think that will happen?
I would assume it's not a global playtime, but an individual playtime. If I had an account and only played game X, then game X will earn $7 (70% of my subscription fee). If I played an hour of X and an hour of Y, each game gets $3.50
well, new actor or not, you did a fantastic job. Especially being the person who first set the tone in the mini-series.
Does the red dye in the store-bought stuff actually make them sick?
You have an awesome sense of humor and grasp of pop culture and meme's. I would say your long term chances of success are high and that your socialization either happened quickly or naturally.
I would wish you luck, but I don't think you need it. You be you man and rock it!
How are there so many Erdogan supporters in the US?
Wow very interesting. Do you think all your memories will return? And if you're American, do you remember your social, please don't post it lol.
I'm very curious about your time perception. How long does it feel like it's been? Do you feel the same age?
And was it harmful to your body? Like did the amnesia cause damage?
People make the mistake of forming anti-racist groups that are rendered ineffective from the start because ONLY invite those who share their beliefs to their meetings.
Provide a safe neutral meeting place.
Learn as much as you can about the ideology of a racist or perceived racist in your area.
Invite that person to meet with your group.
*VERY IMPORTANT - LISTEN to that person. What is his/her primary concern? Place yourself in their shoes. What would you do to address their concern if it were you?
- As questions, but keep calm in the face of their loud, boisterous posture if that is on display, don't combat it with the same
*While you are actively learning about someone else, realize that you are passively teaching them about yourself. Be honest and respectful to them, regardless of how offensive you may find them. You can let them know your disagreement but not in an offensive manner.
- Don't be afraid to invite someone with a different opinion to your table. If everyone in your group agrees with one another and you shun those who don't agree, how will anything ever change? You are doing nothing more than preaching to the choir.
*When two enemies are talking, they are not fighting, they are talking. They may be yelling and screaming and pounding their fist on the table in disagreement to drive home their point, but at least they are talking. It is when the talking ceases, that the ground becomes fertile for violence. So, KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING.
This is hard to predict because there are so many variables, and just a few years ago I wouldn't have expected clean meat to develop so rapidly. But if I had to guess, I'd say 50 years.
Clean meat companies (Hampton Creek and Memphis Meats) say they'll have viable products to sell within the next 1-2 years, but hitting ~90% of the market will take some time, though it could come faster than we expect--Hampton Creek is currently in talks with 10 global meat processors about licensing its clean meat technology.
Right now, the plant-based food sector is still very young, but the interest from investors and the food industry in the last five years has been tremendous. I think it'll take a few decades for plant-based to become a dominant player in the industry because it still makes up less than 1 percent of the food industry. But plant-based milks and meats are growing faster than traditional meat and milk. Ultimately, I think clean and plant-based meats will win out, simply because they're more efficient.
We're actually doing global playtime now, but we're going to evaluate the per-user model as well to see which works out better for developers in the long-run. We want to make it as fair as possible.
It does, it's been shown to create bill rot, then leaving the birds unable to feed.
Haha, thank you, my dude.
I would imagine it's because Turkish citizens living abroad are still able to vote in Turkish elections. The government frequently send Turks to campaign in other countries to convince people to vote for Erdogan.
I am american! I remember my social, my library card from when i was a kid, my mom's cellphone from like 10 years ago... my memories BETTER return. I think they're almost all back, but i would be very disappointed to live the rest of my life in this mindset. I KNOW I'm smarter than this. It feels like Flowers for Algernon or something. I'm so afraid that I'm saying the wrong things or offending people or I'm going to lose my friends that I've told. My boyfriend has been amazing. Lots of cuddles, and only nice words. He's been sending those screen-iphone things. like fireworks and balloons and confetti and i've been playing them over and over. Those things are great. he also took a picture of us cuddling this morning and has been sending it to me every half hour or so.
my time perception- I think I lost 7 hours or so. i remember getting ready for the party and being at the party, and then everything was fuzzy and cloudy and like what i imagine a bad acid trip would feel like. I kept staring at the dash board, because there was a note from my mom that said "thanks for the visit, here's a snack!" i felt like i stared at it for days, trying to analyze the words and keep my body totally still. I didn't know where we were or where we were going at all.
I think I feel the same age. I'm 23. the beginnings of the symptoms were cool, actually. I felt like it was the first time we were having sex and i wanted to just take everything in. i think i even said "wow, you fucked me so good I forgot my name!" which we laughed at the time. Retrospectively, it's sad that that was one of the first symptoms of this scary stuff. I felt like I had been given a chance to "redo" something in my life. Like buddhism must be real, because I had lived this life before, to the very end, but I couldn't remember living it up to this point. I told my friend that i was feeling like this was all a test I had taken before, but I couldn't remember any of the answers. I remember looking in my closet and thinking "WOW! All these beautiful clothes! I haven't seen them for YEARS!!"
TGA should not be harmful to the body. Temporary is in the name. It should end with no permanent effects on my brain. Things are probably 800000x better than they were before, and i have been sitting in the same spot, in a cold sweat, music blasting, since about 1pm, and it only feels like a few minutes have passed. I recognize that my body is starving, but I just can't handle going to the kitchen and risking having to talk to anyone. I had some coffee this morning. so far, the most comforting music has been myself singing. I'm cognizant that that sounds vain, but it's like a lullabye.
Hi Nathan - just got your book in the mail but haven't had time to start it yet!
From an ethical standpoint, would you be comfortable eating meat that originated from animal cells, even if the meat in question didn't directly come from a live animal? It's something i'm on the fence with myself and would appreciate your insight.
Hi! I really like the idea, and will definetly be checking it out.
I have two questions.
How easy is it so unsub/re-sub to the service? I have fairly long periods of down-time where i don't play, and i find it a hassle to unsub/re-sub to most services.
I am an avid user of the Steam Controller, and I don't want to go back to conventional controllers unless im absolutely forced to, also i don't own one anymore.
However, the launcher makes the BPM overlay run in Desktop mode, thus leaving me without Xinput. Are there any plans to talk with Steam about making Jump register through Steam as a controller rather than desktop mode? And if not, maybe in the future? I will likely open a ticket to Steam and see what they have to say, but i figure if it comes from someone like you guys, it might be taken more seriously. There are many of us, and we tend to gravitate towards smaller games aswell so it could be a win/win for minimal effort!
Good luck guys!
Awesome work on Rick & Morty (and all those other roles we have loved seeing/hearing you do).
Did you and James record your Rick & Morty dialogue together or separately?
How often do you see other BSG cast members in real life?
I was motivated by the racism I would encounter. I love people, I love my country. I have been to 53 countries around the world on 6 continents and I've seen different people get along in most of them. I know the United States can be a better place and we all have an obligation to making our society a better place not just for ourselves but for all Americans. I am just doing my part.
Yes, I've actually eaten "clean meat" already (the first real meat I've had in 16 years). I think clean meat has the potential to end factory farming and save billions of animals (and perhaps our planet). I talk about my experience eating clean meat, as well as many of the innovators who are helping to bring it to market in the next few years, in the book.
You can unsubscribe at any time, and we'll keep both your profile and game save data warm for you in case you ever decide to come back.
We'd certainly like to support their controllers (I have one too), so we'll want to open a dialog with them about it. We're not trying to replace Steam (which is basically impossible), but rather complement it, so we hope they'd be open to it.
James and I recorded separately, which is normal in voice work.
I see other BSG cast all the time. Not as much the Vancouver based actors obviously, but the LA ones. Katee, Trucco, James I see a lot. Eddie often, and Mary occasionally. Used to see Jamie quite a bit but his family moved to France about two years ago.
Are you concerned that it will incentivize making games longer so that gamers stay longer in them and thus those developers getting more of the share? Or that it will penalize shorter experiences. For example, two of my favorite indie games is To the Moon and RimWorld. One takes 4 hours to complete and the other I've played for more than 100 hours so far. But RimWorld is not 25x better and I don't think it'd be fair to give that much more money to it.
I think it's a fairly well known fact that when authors get paid per page, the length of the books generally go up, so it's not a totally baseless concern I feel.
Hi Tricia! What was your absolute favorite tv or movie role to play and why?
Might have been asked before, but I'm curious: how did you come to do this AMA? Were you encouraged to do so in another thread elsewhere on Reddit?
So who actually attacked you? This is what is unclear to me.

This is where our curation comes in! We actively filter out games that are "gaming" the system for more revenue, and it's actually against our rules to do so. If a game is genuinely interesting and gets a ton of play time (like I played FTL for 100 hours) that's fine, but if they're trying to purposefully game Jump's payout system, they'll get the boot.
I actually don't have favorites of anything. Never have. No favorite food, book, etc. I've certainly had roles I've liked more than others, but favorite, no. They are all different experiences on screen and behind the scenes. I loved BSG, of course. Really enjoying Lucifer right now, and I loved playing Molly Parker in Killer Women. The project wasn't the strongest overall, but the character was so much fun.
You know, I thought one or two people would find it interesting and after hearing people were doing some and personally asking some questions, I went ahead and tried it.
It's hard to figure out, we are working on identifying some of them. Because Erdogan's security guards just wears suits, we can't tell who attacked whom. Plus, I was face down for much of the incident.
Thank you very much!
Thanks, it's really interesting. I have a conspiracy loving friend with an unvaccinated 2 year old who says she is going to home school so her daughter won't be taught the 'wrong' things by the lying government and Reptilian globalists. This gives me hope.
Aw. That sucks. I'm glad it gives you hope though!
But literally, I have friends that fit in the "college liberal activist" stereotype and they would literally say this. One friend of mine often critizes compromise. He would see talking to KKK members as nothing more than fraternising with the enemy.
It's kinda frustrating because while I agree with him on most basic principles, I also think you really need to understand the other side and their motivations. It's not compromise to truly understand and structure your arguments beyond the tiny frame of "You're a racist bad person so just shut up and go away!" You do that and the other side just double downs on their position.bYou'll never talk down everyone because yeah, there's bad people that should be fought, but there's better ways to fight.
So I have been vegetarian for animal protection and for environmental reasons for 25 years. The same problems that we see today in abuse of animals were happening 25 years ago, and we knew full well how bad factory farms were for the environment.
Why do you think we have not been successful in disseminating this information? Very few laws have been fundamentally changed, and the meat consumption is higher than ever and large factory farms still abuse animals. What can we do to improve the life of these animals?
So more along the lines of common practice. In a sense of what they are supposed to do procedurally. Makes sense that way as well.
Your friend is actually trying to use reverse psychology on you. He is trying to have you believe that compromise is a weakness on your part. This is because he is the one who is weak, in that he is not a strong enough person to have the balls to sit down and have a conversation with the "enemy." That my friend, is where the strength comes in and only the strong survive. If he perceives the enemy to be weak and inferior, they are showing more strength than him, if they are the ones willing to sit down and talk. Explain that to him. :)
I think it's important to remember that our movement is still very young and we're up against a very old, powerful, and wealthy industry. See this blog post for context: http://www.countinganimals.com/meat-industry-advertising/
That said, I think we have made, and will continue to make, enormous strides for farmed animals. In 2001, there were zero state laws banning the extreme confinement of farmed animals (battery cages, gestation crates, veal crates)--now 11 states have laws on the books. When I first went vegan it was difficult to find plant-based meats and milks, but now plant-based milks make up 10 percent of all fluid milk sales and plant-based meat is growing faster than animal meat. We're also seeing large food companies take an interest in plant-based companies--Tyson Foods invested in Beyond Meat (which is now served at TGI Friday's), Nestle just bought Sweet Earth Foods, etc.
Lastly, our issues are entering the cultural zeitgeist. Okja and What the Health both did extremely well on Netflix, The Guardian's editorial board just endorsed veganism, and there's now even a US Senator (Cory Booker) who is vegan for ethical reasons.
I know we have a long way to go, but factory farming didn't come about overnight--it came about after 10,000+ years of agricultural production. We're not going to end it overnight. But we're certainly getting closer each year.
Our goal was to make sure Erdogan knew that when he leaves the confines of his safe space in Turkey, he will be challenged and called out for his heinous crimes against humanity. We intended to garner support and media attention, while at the same time shutting down his speech. I would say we accomplished quite a bit.
I remember thinking "has that......HAPPENED?!"
Hey Daryl, what do you think is the most common reason people join hate groups like the KKK in the first place?
Just so you're aware, there is no best model in this scenario. Both are valid, and you are going to have to do better. I mean this with highest regard. Good luck in your optimization efforts at including all options so that each state in the union is represented equally in voting in the president, even though some are huge and have few people, and some are small and have all the people.
PS, when you solve this problem efficiently in one way, please inform the US government.
Hi Tricia! I have had 6 heart surgeries and the result is I now require an ICD. My coworkers who are avid BSG fans refer to me as a toaster. Would Caprica 6 have any advice on living life on a battery and a computer?
what is your favourite hummingbird?
Do you agree with your parents anti-establishment beliefs or are you pro-establushment or somewhere in the middle?
What would your view on the actions of the group called PKK be? are they terrorists?
The Black-crested Coquette https://neotropical.birds.cornell.edu/Species-Account/nb/species/blccoq1/overview
I don't agree with their beliefs but in order to keep an open mind, I think it's good to listen. On YouTube, I'm subscribed to Infowars not because I believe everything they say but because I think it's important to not let my ill-feelings towards them obstruct rational thinking.
I can't bring myself to call them a terrorist organization. I have spoken to so many Kurds who owe their lives to PKK. They are a reactionary movement to a ruthlessly genocidal state. They are far from perfect and I don't agree with all of their tactics, but how can you mercilessly oppress an entire ethnic group for decades and then act surprised and outraged when they fight back?
THERE'S A BAY-BEE IN THAR I JUST KNOWS IT
What is the general reaction when you tell them you're black? Do they know when you first talk to them, or is it much later in the conversation?
I dknt think this system is intended as a replacement for Steam or HumbleBundle or other outlets.
A developer will choose the platforms that are best for them.
Shorter games wouldnt be good on any rental system or service like this. They would never get as much revenue because the entire game would be played in a day.
Not every platform can support every type of game. Shorter games do well when added to bundles of other games. I got a bunch of niche stuff that i enjoyed simply because it was on HumbleBundle.
I agree that we're not trying to replace Steam and other stores, but I'd actually disagree that shorter games wouldn't benefit from Jump and other services that pay out based on play time. Here's the answer I posted above to a similar question:
Once a short game runs the majority of its premium sales elsewhere (Steam, bundles, etc.), then it's basically sold all the copies it's going to sell. BUT, that doesn't mean more people wouldn't play it - they just want to pay for other things over it. So, by bringing it to Jump later in its life cycle, that game can now monetize users who may have never bought it, but still wanted to play it (or just wanted to pop in and try it). This way, developers are monetizing users they would have never captured via premium sales and thus it complements their sales rather than from detracting from them.
We've tried to make it so there's a home for every type of game on Jump - just has to be the right time!
Thank you for participating too!
Hi Daryl, thanks for making the world a better place! What do you usually talk to them about when you first meet? What type of language do you use and how do you respond when they say something racist?
Did you get turned down by any "big" names? What were their concerns?
Do you think Jump is more helpful to smaller, lesser-known games? Is there a reason to put FTL on there instead of just putting it on sale?
Do devs all get an equal share, or is it somehow depend on what games people are playing most?
If you could choose any of your fellow BSG alumni to work together with again, who would it be?
Follow up: Do you have any other things that you'd like to work on? Ie: Directing/writing or are you more comfortable in front of the camera?
Do you have a favorite photo you took yourself of one of these?
The reception in the developer community has been very positive thus far - we work with them to find the right time to bring their game to Jump (so there's no risk of cannibalizing any premium sales), and we pay advances to lower the porting risk too, so most developers we've spoken to have been very receptive, including Ed McMillen, who brought his newest game (The End Is Nigh, with Tyler Glaiel) to Jump for launch.
We certainly want it to be helpful to lesser-known games! I think She Remembered Caterpillars is a great example of why Jump can be beneficial. That game won a TON of awards, but sold very few copies. Now that game can have new life on Jump and be played, as it very well should.
70% of all our monthly net revenue goes to our game developers, and that is split up based on play time in each game. So an easy way to think of it is, # of minutes in YOUR game vs. number of minutes in ALL games would be your split of the 70%. We think the payout rate will average between $0.25-0.50 per hour.
I'd work with them all! I've actually worked with Micheal Trucco since. He played my brother on Killer Women. Was great because since he's one of my good friends, we already had that vibe and didn't have to "act" it really. I do want to do a reboot of Cagney and Lacey with Katee Sackhoff : ) I could see directing at some point, but not yet. Definitely producing is in my future though. Have a project right now that I'm currently in deal stages on.
Black Crested Coquette https://neotropical.birds.cornell.edu/Species-Account/nb/species/blccoq1/overview
It's been hard. Even the judge that made my birth certificate official expressed sympathy.
Never been in the military before. Training was all in the YPG.
Intrauterine device. It's a little birth control implant called the Mirena
Daryl, just recently watched your netflix documentary and loved it.
In that documentary you spoke with some BLM members and they did not take to you too well. Did you agree with them on anything? Anything different you would say to them now?
Thanks! Best of luck, it looks like a great service. Very reasonably priced, too. Is there anywhere to see all the games without signing up?
Hi Tricia! I just want to say that I am honored that you follow me on Instagram. Raven and Woodhouse say hi! We were actually watching Lucifer on Hulu when I saw you commented on one of my posts. I started jumping up and down like a crazy person haha. I love all the work you do with animals. You truly are a beautiful person, inside and out.
What all can we expect from Charlotte's character in the future now that she is no longer "Mom"? If you are able to answer that...
According to Aztec mythology, warriors who served the sun god Huizilopochtli turn into hummingbirds when they die.
How do you think an Aztec warrior would react to the work you do?
Well, I'm hoping they'd make me their leader since I'm a friend to the Hummingbirds. Hopefully, there is some sort of crown I'd get.
Lots. I, unfortunately, was allowed to as well.
Hello! Thank you for doing this AMA. What's the most interesting experience you've had while on the job?
What was your biggest challenge to starting Jump?
How is your service different from other game hosting services?
Thanks for doing this. Loved BSG. What has been your most awkward starstruck moment? Not a fan meeting you,but you meeting someone you're a fan of?
We live in southern Michigan, and we just started getting hummingbirds this year since we bought a feeder. We absolutely love them. When I was a kid in elementary school, a teacher once told us about a story where they found a hummingbird that had rammed its beak into the chest of a fox, killing them both. Have you ever heard of anything like that happening? Would they or could they ever attack a human or a small animal? They are cute but man are they aggressive and territorial when tested.
Here's a picture I took of one this year in the back yard, for fun. :)
Bootstrapping with no money in our evenings and weekends was definitely a little rough :) That, and fighting the "streaming" stigma since other services in the past have used what we feel to be the wrong technology for this type of service. Once we were able to hire some developers that were more talented than me, we also learned very quickly just how much work goes into building a scalable, stable infrastructure for a service like this. We're very happy with how it turned out, but it was a sprint to get here.
The biggest differences between us and other subscription services is that we heavily curate our library for quality, and that our technology is a great fit for this model across ALL devices for ALL types of games. We're launching first on desktop with just indie games, but by no means does our technology limit us to those 2 things forever - quite the opposite actually.
When I presented at the Hockey awards. They pulled me backstage to go on soon, and I walked into the greenroom full of hockey greats. I think I stuck myself up against a wall, behind a big barrel of gatorade bottles, and just sort of stared.
Awesome picture! love the contrast.
I think that might be a bit of an old wives tale. I have seen Hummingbirds empale each other, well I've seen a specimen of it, but never a larger animal. They are for sure aggresive though, their aerial battles with one another are something to see.
I stopped smoking. I don't even drink anymore—not that I should at 18, but it's good fun to watch adults faces when I talk about preferring tequila over whiskey.
It's really disheartening to see. There's such a dark side that they don't even know about. We have done campaigns against Turkey before, my nonprofit North American Kurdish Alliance helped rent a truck that drove around NYC during the UN Assembly. It could be part of another campaign in the future.
Mods: Has this been posted? Can you help me? Thanks
Thanks for taking the time to do an AMA. In your proof photo, you say you'll talk about the robe and hood. What can you tell us about it?
This service seems great for me, I'll definitely check it out.If one day it also works for mobile, that would completely change mobile gaming for me! There are so many great indie games on mobile but they drown in a sea of money grabbing shovelware.
Hey Tricia! I’m a big fan and you were one of my celebrity crushes in high school and currently in my adult life. Thank you for taking the time to do this AMA today!
My question is: if you bumped into someone who knew about BSG but only seen the miniseries, what are the 5 essential episodes to recommend for that person to watch?
Dude... why do the hummingbirds at my folks house attack me? They dive bomb my ears and are so brave!
Is that your real hair? What's a good conditioner to use with that style?
What do you think about Israel/Palestine issue . And its paralels to the Kurdish issue?
Yes could be the color of the clothing you're wearing or you might have been near their nest, they tend to be quite brave.
Oh my. Well I used to use apple cider vinegar because my dad made me. Haha. I just use whatever my grandmother purchases; I'm not choosy.
I am not educated enough about Israel/Palestine to draw parallels to the Kurds
This question is confusing. I didn't stay awake for 24 hours. I took little naps.
"When I first am conscious after forgetting" me awake after ..... see? I've been having to whisper my thoughts out loud to myself and use hand gestures to understand concepts
Hi Tricia! Would you go to space if you had the chance? What are some of your fears?
Thank you for this AMA!! Do the flowers that hummingbirds feed from affect the color of the feathers? Also, I had once snapped a photo of one and in the picture, the wings were up, but the shadow of the wing was pointed down on the wall behind it. Do you often have this happen in your photos? Obviously shutter speed was a factor, I just thought it was a neat occurrence.
After spending 6 months in Western Kurdistan (Syria), I came to understand how their suffering over thousands of years gives many of them a very sympathetic worldview. They are the kindest and most hospitable people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
I love fast cars. I drive a '98 Mustang coupe :)
Meditation is a great idea!!! Don't know why I hadn't thought of it :) thanks for your words. They're really nice.
How you came to possess them, and why you keep them are questions I have.
Will you have VR games for the Rift or Vive etc.?
So… what happens now? Are you capable of getting a birth certificate/SSN now? What's the process of doing that?
Hello. Did you expect to be attacked in that way?
Did the world media cover it accurately?
Do you think the plight of the Kurds is becoming more mainstream in the deserved sympathy ?
Funny thing is, there are actual cases of pot being the cause of TGA, so it's very possible that's what happened here, especially given the car story.
I acquired them as members would quit the Klan as they came to know me and see a different path for their lives. I keep them so I can place them in a museum which I am working on getting now.
Yes! We actually can already support VR in theory, but our desktop apps are Chromium-based and unfortunately Chromium hasn't released WebVR support yet. Firefox has it, so the tech is basically ready (and we're definitely ready) - just have to wait for support to hit Chromium.
ConMan was fun. Alan is great to work off of, and it was just fun to play a character totally different than I usually play. I liked the intro scene in the hotel lobby maybe the best.
If you were to plant a variety of native flowers that will bloom, in Spring, Summer, and Fall, you can create a year-long feeding source for them. Supplement that with a couple of feeders in the flower beds, and you have a Hummingbird all you can eat buffet.
I am getting my birth certificate soon actually with the social security number coming after.
First, it takes petitioning a court to hear me and my witnesses (maternal grandma and paternal grandma) and believe we're telling the truth. Then, they sign an order that establishes I was born, which becomes official after I send it to the California Department of Public Health - Vital Records. Finally, I use my Medi-Cal benefits card, certified birth certificate, and certified judge-signed establishing order to get assigned a social security number.
I absolutely expected the assault. This makes 4 times that Americans have been attacked for protesting against Erdogan.
The world media had its ups and downs. Lots of outlets did a great job of covering it, BBC put out a good report. However, a lot of media outlets, I think in an attempt to be unbiased, ended up being fallacious. Many of them called this a "brawl", a "clash", and claimed that "fistfights" erupted between us and the Erdogan supporters. All of the video evidence shows that no protestors fought back - this was a very one-sided assault.
Every day I have more people reach out to me on social media; people from all parts of the world, all political affiliations, and all walks of life want to know more about the Kurdish cause. Information on crimes against the Kurds is easily accessible online. People who find out about these problems sympathize with Kurds almost immediately - I think it's just a matter of making people aware of the issues.
what car story? can you explain more?
This would be huge for me. I have a Rift but have a hard time swallowing $30+ prices for experiences that are only an hour or two with no replayability. Having more access would get me on board pretty quick.
Do you have any funny or crazy stories from working on BSG?
Also, was working on the miniseries any different from working on the show that followed it?
Bees have started to swarm the hummingbird feeders and scaring away the little guys. What can I do to prevent bees from taking their feeding spot?
Will the process be easier for your siblings to follow since you're paving the way for them? Or is it going to be like starting over from scratch for them?
What was daily life like fighting with the YPG? How did you end up joining up with them?
They do sell feeders that have bee guards on them, how often are you changing out the sugar water ?
It would be a hell of a lot easier if my dad didn't disapprove of my method.
In the front, just a lot of moving around, trying not to step on mines, and getting shot at sometimes. In the rear, a lot of boredom and sitting around waiting. Guard duty usually every night. The main difference was lack of creature comforts, I guess, but I really didn't mind that part much.
They have information online if you search enough, after some exchanged emails I was headed to Northern Syria. They don't actively recruit but there are ways to contact them.
wouldn't that have manifested one of the other thousands of times that I've smoked? Or affected anyone else that was there? It was like a small family birthday party at a park
YES PLEASE! I bought a Rift a while back and was actually wishing of something like this, I truly believe services are the next big thing for gaming. Can't wait for you to release VR games, it will be an instant buy for me.
Hey! I was one of your drivers @Dragoncon (for the past 4 years).
I've heard stories of different stars and their attitudes toward the "Con" environment. What keeps you coming back?
I always have tiny unexpected moments with guests (I got to sing "the Monster Mash" with Peter Mayhew last year) that stick in my head as special and priceless. Do you have any particular stories about crazy happenstances that happened outside of the 'walk of fame' or a panel?
So glad for this AMA! How often should the water be changed? What else can we do in the midwest to help? (Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky)
Well, hello. No stories that come to mind right now. Dragon Con is insane though! I actually stayed really quite this year. Two years ago when I was there and a lot of BSG cast was, we went out every night and I got really sick afterwards. This year I was heading back to film Lucifer so I wanted to make sure I was rested. I was very quiet this year.
Basically I enjoy meeting the fans and hearing their stories. Without fans, we wouldn't have jobs : )
I love Rojava. It's one of the most amazing human experiments I have ever seen. They're in the process of creating stability in the wake of incredible atrocity and violence. There are many problems but they are the best hope among all factions in Syria.
You're crazy if you think I've smoked pot since :'D my neurologist cleared me, he was the one who initially suggested I look into it. I've had bad migraines since I was a baby. I wasn't able to get my driver's licence until I was 20. I know that it's done great things for my life in the past, and I will probably not quit. Maybe after this I'll consider switching back to topiramate, but if I do that, I will definitely not be going back to school, since that drug is called DOPEamax for a reason.
For the Klan members you actually get a dialogue going with, what are the usual talking points they discuss with you, a black man? Do they shy away from talking about things like genetics, or do they debate you on that?
As a follow up, what points do they bring up that you may agree with, even in only small amounts?
I think this would be huge for VR. A majority of the VR games are made my Indie developers + the games themselves are much more of a "netflix" type experience where you can play and explore the games for a couple hours and then you have experienced pretty much all they have to offer. Then you are on to the next one.
I wouldn't buy this service as is but if they expanded to VR I would definitely pick it up.
If you could go back in time and turn yourself into a masterclass assassin who is hired for big hits and is virtually undetectable, would you do it? (Well considering it is possible, of course.)
Thanks for responding! Could you expand on what you see as their biggest problems, and biggest threats?
What is a western person like me to do to support that community, to help build the world we'd like to live in?
Any hurdles that others can assist in?
I didn't play. Haven't played any video games actually. Love voicing them though!
Signing off guys. Thanks so much for participating!
Well, the argument can always be made, why care about any other species but ourselves. With a species like Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the only species found on the east coast, it's an important pollinator. Creating growth of native species of flowers, that play a role in the pollination availability for bees. Those bees that pollinate our crops, so if you were to not care and eliminate Hummingbirds they could negatively affect, our food industry, only one example.
If they paid for my workouts, yes.
I know that thanks to you, many people have left the klan.
How many people would you say that was, and how long on average would it take them to come around after meeting you?
Any chance it works on a Chromebook?
Hi There :) What is the most rewarding kitten (or else) rescue you've ever done or the one that felt most rewarding, at least?
Thanks! I really wasn't trying to troll I knew you'd have a great answer for this, and I hadn't seen it asked so I went for it. I like to ask people the "jerk" questions as they often provide the best information. Source: I once asked a particularly clever math teacher why I should care about math, was quickly put in my place.Had a new respect for him and math after that.
It does indeed! We have a web app version of Jump we've been told works quite nicely. You can sign in to that in the top right corner of our landing page.
They are all rescues so have all been rewarding. I think two that we adopted as seniors were both amazing and I like putting out there that adopting seniors can be super, super rewarding. They've had a hard life usually and just so happy and thankful to have a loving home.
I would personally say no, that the bread has two separated pieces.
There's a block in it somewhere. Could you maybe try rephrasing?
Have you ever been to Selma, AL? If so, what was your experience like?! If not, would you ever think of visiting to look at the social structure left after Martin Luther King?
How do you plan to be comparative in a web environment if we lose net neutrality?
Not counting your own... What TV series finale episode have you loved the most and which one disappointed you the most. Why?
Hi! I'm also a hummingbird biologist, and this is a great (not rude) question! Justifying what we research is something that every scientist should think about and be able to say.
I'd just like to add a few less tangible points. Maybe they will resonate with some people, maybe not. /u/gourmetbiologist has already pointed out the potential economic impact of hummingbird conservation, BUT there's also...
Taxonomic importance: The hummingbird group is unique to the New World. It is also incredibly diverse, the 2nd most diverse bird taxon, at ~330-340 species. Most of that biodiversity is in South America (especially Ecuador), but even the comparative handful of species we have the US represent a truly unique product of evolution.
Research and Development: Hummingbirds are super unique in their flight and metabolic physiology. Some truly extraordinary research is being done into their flight mechanics that could influence future human flight technology (look into the work of Doug Altshuler) and their diet of sugar-rich resources has implications for diabetes research (see Hargrove 2005).
Conservation and connection to wildlife: This is a bit more of a personal anecdote, but after studying hummingbirds for a while now I've found that their potential for "flagship" species, so to speak, for connecting wildlife to everyday normal people is huge. Many, many people love hummingbirds, and connecting those birds to patterns and processes in nature can really expand a person's appreciation for wildlife. People get SO INTO seeing hummingbirds up close when I am banding them, and it's such a great opportunity to connect with people and discuss issues both relating to hummingbirds, or to conservation at a broader scale. That connection, sitting on a porch next to a feeder surrounded by the public, is just something you can't replicate if you're studying a more iconic conservation animal like large mammals.
Are you sure that you weren't kidnapped or illegally adopted as a baby? It would also fit with them not having any documents for you and being terrified of the police coming. You could potentially have your DNA compared to the NamUs database to see if there are any matches.
Did you guys hit back? Also next protest will you guys bring more protestors and give his bodyguards an good American beat down?
Yes I have. There is still the haunting of the past there, much like Mississippi. Even among Black people, there is some degree of distrust of me, because I'm "not from these parts." A lot has changed, but there are still skeletons and some of the people who tried to prevent those changes are still around and their children and grandchildren are there. So, while progress has been made, people still are cautious. That too, needs to change.
Ohhh good question. We're actively working on several ways to reduce our data load so that it wouldn't get us throttled (or charged more) as we grow. We'd put a stronger emphasis on these efforts if it looks like things were going south on net neutrality. Let's hope they don't.
Ack, hard to answer as I really don't watch that much. Grew up without a television also so can't go back to that time period for any ideas. Last I binged was Bloodline and Handmaids Tale (I think that's what it's called...blanking right now). Regardless, it was amazing. Sorry, that's not really answering your question though.
Love the 3 one, I think that is where I try to make my greatest strides as well, thus my reason for using the social media monster to communicate with a much more general audience about science and conservation. Hummingbirds seem to resonate with people, so drawing them in and then talking about conversation issues, is something I strive for as well. Thanks for the extra gusto to my response.
I'm sure. She got pregnant and everyone saw it. I ruled that out a long time ago.
None of us fought back. Even if I wanted to, my arms and legs were pinned or held down from the moment I was taken to the floor by Erdogan's supporters.
While I can't say I dislike the idea of giving the guards a taste of their own medicine, I imagine that we would look pretty unsympathetic in the media if we were to fight back. Many media outlets are already calling this a "brawl" or a "clash", instead of the one-sided beat down that it actually was. Though certainly a bigger opposition would have been better in terms of keeping the security busier and creating more chaos.
I, too, am a budding conservationist striving for a career doing research (currently undergoing my masters). Having been to the Peruvian Amazon where I collected data on butterfly species for my undergraduate thesis, I'm particularly interested in birds, especially those of the neotropics. Your Instagram page is wonderful and your pictures are very inspiring
How did you get involved with working with neotropic migrants, as this is an ambition of mine?
Have you seen "Capitan Fantastic"? If so, how much of that would you say you could "relate" to? (Sorry if repeat question)
What do you have to say, if anything, regarding the Kurdish Peshmerga demanding Assyrians to give up their arms assuring their protection only to abandon my people when ISIS attacked them?
I got involved working with Neotropical migrants, through the Institue for Bird Populations. They have a long-running program of doing research on-site fidelity sites throughout central and South America. I've been co-running stations in Costa Rica where we net them and look at their long-term site fidelity and habitat usage.
I watched the trailer and it was giving me flashbacks.
I am appalled not just by the Pesh Merga treatment of not just Assyrians, but other minorities such as Yezidis. Pesh merga completely failed to defend the Yezidi community in Şengal and denied repeated requests for extra protection in the face of ISIS threat. I have many criticisms for KDP.
Are there any actors out there you have yet to work with on your bucket list?
Do you take on interns at any of the stations? I would love to get involved and gain orthnithology-related experience when I finish my masters in February
Thank you for watching the documentary Accidental Courtesy. That was a very powerful scene. It had to be edited down. You saw 8 minutes, but that confrontation actually went on for an hour. There was a lot of misinformation there which led to misunderstanding. However, believe it or not. We are friends now. We had dinner last Wednesday night together and hung out. Dialogue is the key to resolving many an issue.
I like the idea, because I loath micro transactions and DLC can be a pain when there's lots of it and they don't provide enough content for the cost. Your strategy solves that issue.
My question is, for the developers who regularly release a lot of DLC, are there any rules in place on what counts as a DLC worthy of the extra attention they'd get by being featured in New Content Updates?
Some devs are slow to release their DLC, but it'll have enough content to be its own game, but others often add tons of small game elements/small story chapters, etc on a regular basis. Seems that extra attention to the latter developer (because they keep adding new content to stay in that category) might be unfair to the former developer.
Do you keep in touch with the BSG cast? Who were you most close with and how do you guys feel about the show now?
How do you get such detailed picture of hummingbirds...are they in the lab/wild, camera traps, etc? You're pictures are incredible! Also..is there a video/audio link or is this all just text Q and A?
Hi! I work on statelessness and was wondering, do you have nationality?
Getting your birth registered in a quite some countries worldwide is an important step in acquiring nationality. With the USA system I believe you'd automatically be eligible to acquire citizenship for being born on the territory, but not sure what additional steps you'd have to take. So really very curious what your situation is like!
Yeah we'll be able to draw a line in the sand as to what constitutes new DLC as we build that feature out, but at a high level, actual new content would count, whereas bug fixes or small updates would not. Of course we'll have to get more granular with this as time goes on.
Answered this earlier so scroll down to see : )
They are all wild individuals, I use a variety of Macro lenses.
Only text Q and A, sorry about that
I hadn't thought about that. I thought I would possess it after acquiring my social security number and birth certificate.
Will you retire games the same way that netflix retires shows? What happens if I've just picked up a game and started to enjoy it but your catelog no longer supports the game?
Hi Tricia! I'm curious about your role in Lucifer... do you think your character arch was done, could've kept going for another season, or might come back again after a break, and why?
We have no intention of rotating games out of the catalog. Our deals with developers are open-ended and revenue share-based, so there's no up-front, timed licensing deals like you see on Netflix or Xbox Game Pass. We want to have an ever-growing library.
I am back. Haven't been secretive about that, so you've missed a bit :)
How many humming birds would it take to carry a one pound coconut across the English Channel?
I think they mean what was your parents plan to carry on the family line if you kids were made to stay inside and not make friends/not have opportunities to find a future significant other?
So species range from the 3 to 11-gram range, so I'll let you do the math.
Oh. I'm not really sure. I guess they just assumed I'd meet someone somehow. Maybe at a grocery store? Mm, get me some 50-year-old biker babe buying cheddar crisps. That would be the gold at the end of the booby trapped tunnel.
Is there any plans to make an indie game exclusive to Jump?
Hi Tricia, got to meet you at DragonCon this year, you were awesome. You really should bring the red dress to those photoshoots, they would sell out for days!
So, now that you have played a key role in God's plan, and been Lucifer's mother; when are you playing the role of THE ONE? :-)
Love the work with Acting Outlaws, your work with Denden and lastly can I possibly get a "Happy Birthday" shout out since the big 50 is days away?
For a long time I thought hummingbirds are native to warmer climates, but recently I've seen some at my grandparents house (tons of flowers) and wasn't sure at first if they really are hummingbirds.
Do you have any ideas what species live in my area? This was happening in Piatra Neamț, România. It's near the mountains and above the 45th parallel.
Thank you :D
I mean how would you meet other people outside your family? Internet I assume? I can imagine that would be tough to bring someone into what sounds like a commune situation.
We'll look at exclusives within the next 18 months or so, but it has to be a good deal for the developer, too. We'd want to pay them to develop the game rather than bring us their existing game as an exclusive, because we always tell developers to go grab their premium sales first before coming to Jump.
Well, happy birthday! And Yes, I'll have to make a point to do a photoshoot sometime at a convention with the dress : ) I don't know what "The One" is.
I'm gonna guess it might be a species of moth. Hummingbirds are only found in the Americas.
The internet was the only place I could meet people. I hear I do well with normal interactions though. :)
So I'm primarily on linux these days. How much of your game library works on linux, or does your program work on linux at all?
Is that something you're looking into in the future? You mention quite a few times 'coming to all platforms'.
What plants or flowers can I plant in Missouri to attract hummingbirds?
Cardinal flower, Burgemont, there are a number of vine species. If you go to National Audubon native flower database, they can give you some specifics. Especially for that area, I'm a northeast coast guy in the planting advice category, sorry.
I love couch co-ops. How many are currently in your library, and how do you feel about making sure more are available to play on your platform?
How can I become a Hummingbird expert?
Reading through your responses was fascinating. You speak with eloquence and experience. What you've been through is herculean, to say the least. What astounds me the most was your ability to develop critical thinking and to use research to prove or disprove your beliefs. Your ability to interact with others online with dignity is something uncommon and admirable.
What was the process like for you to discern between conspiracy and truth? Considering the beliefs your parents had and the environment you were raised in, how did you come to understand those beliefs as incorrect? You could have dismissed resources (as weird as that sounds), like Khan Academy, as conspiracy and prescribed to believe in sites such as InfoWars and Breitbart, especially with the current state of the United States in which reality itself is challenged by people in power.
Personally, I find it difficult to legitimately listen to the viewpoints of people (like those who trust InfoWars, conspiracies, and other things like that). How do you interact with people like that while maintaining your own composure?
Is it possible your internet friends had some kind of influence on you to seek out something different from how you've lived all your life?
I really hope for the best for you. You have a bright future ahead and insurmountable potential.
The beauty of Jump is that, since we're NOT streaming, you can still enjoy all the games on Jump even on the worst connections - the download times will just take a little longer to get into games. The games run locally (using your computer's CPU/GPU), so once they're running, your connection speed doesn't matter anymore. I actually do demos via a phone tethered connection often when WiFi is poor/not available.
Our goal is to become the go-to subscription service for all types of games (old and new) across all types of devices.
any plans on putting your platform on consoles? I would definitely subscribe to something like this on the Nintendo Switch.
My mother-in-law loves hummingbirds and recently heard that if you leave feeders out too late in the season, the hummingbirds will stick around too long and not migrate when they are supposed to. Is there any truth to this?
I have many questions.
What was life like growing up being homeschooled?
Did you have friends growing up?
Any girlfriends or crushes?
Do you drive?
Did you or your parents needed money while growing up? If so, what did you or your parents do for money?
I can't comment too affirmatively here, but what I can say is that we're exploring various other platforms as our tech can power the same experience basically anywhere, and we'd have subsets of games specifically designed for each platform to uphold the quality experience the developers intended.
Good to know!
I think this is a bit of a mystery still to be honest. A fit bird will realize it's time to migrate. I believe some of these lingering birds, might not be the fittest birds in terms of survival. I think there are still some unanswered questions on this topic.
I wasn't homeschooled really. I recall one day when our mother made us, my brothers and I, put backpacks on and "walk to school" by running to a school bus in place. That was followed by getting a 3rd grade school quiz thrown at us that repeated itself over and over again and got—naturally—easier and more repetitive as I got older.
Hey there, thanks for doing this AMA.
I myself am very interested in maybe pursuing a sort of biology-related career, and wanted to ask:
1.) What kind of school did you go through to become a hummingbird biologist?
2.) Do you enjoy what you do for your job?
3.) Is there anything you'd want to tell someone that's thinking of going into any sort of biology field of work?
Do you know when your birthday is? Was it celebrated?
Our current "featured" games are:
The End Is Nigh (Ed McMillen's New Game)
Drive!Drive!Drive! (published by the Bit Trip crew)
Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor (published by tinyBuild)
Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball (online multiplayer insanity)
Beatbuddy (actually demoed next to them at PAX with our old game!)
Beholder (please or rebel against the motherland)
Ittle Dew (Zelda-like adventure game)
Pony Island (Pony game possessed by the devil - yep)
Teslagrad (award-winning platformer, hand-drawn)
The Bridge (crazy art style puzzler)
We'll rotate featured games once a week so every game on Jump gets a spotlight.
I was an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major.
I love what I do.
I think that we need to encourage more people to go into this field. I hear a lot of people telling people don't do it, there isn't enough money, it's going to be hard. It is going to be hard, and if you want to rise to the head of the pack you'll need to put in a lot of effort, it's not a 9-5 five days a week job, you need to go home and think about it a lot. I think that its a job that truly needs to be your passion and hobby to excel in it.
First birthday was $30; second was $20; and twelfth was $0. It was pretty usual, ahaha. I did get presents, but my dad didn't like to give them.
We mentioned this service briefly on our podcast last night. I think it's awesome what you are doing. Have most developers been pretty receptive of joining the platform or has it been an issue to get them to buy in?
I absolutely love your photos, and have wanted to do what you did since I was a kid. How do you fund your field studies? Private/public grants? US-based, or international groups?
At the moment, the Nature Center near me has just folded, and while the Township is up for purchasing the property in order to continue its mission, the buildings are in a bad state, and need to be repaired. I'm trying to figure out how to find enough grants to repair the old barn and get it running again. Any tips on grant writing for this sort of effort?
Some of it is private and public grants. Companies investing. Fundraising. It all depends.
I would say maybe a community outreach campaign, DM and maybe I can help more if you can give me some background information.
I think it should be illegal.
Does Jump do anything to support the developers financially? What would be the advantage of a developer getting their game on Jump as opposed to Steam?
Hi there, and thanks for doing this AMA. I have been fascinated by Hummingbirds and am very excited to hear your insights. My question is, how do you think climate change and this year's storm seasons are affecting the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds?
Would you rather have been “documented” as a child or now?
We actually work with developers to bring their games to Jump AFTER Steam so we can complement their premium sales rather than try to replace them. We pay out 70% of our monthly net revenue to developers and split it up based on play time in each game. On top of that, we also pay developers advances on revenu (case by case basis) to lower the risk of porting their game to a new service with a new business model.
I assume there's no offline mode? If my internet goes down and I've downloaded the game fully I can't play it?
I'm going to Costa Rica in two weeks where are some good spots to see hummingbirds?
Offline mode is in the plans! Certainly a priority for us in the next 12 months or so I'd say.
Monteverde is a great spot, the Quetzal lodge is another incredible location.
You think I write well? Thank you. I wrote a 450 page novel and read a lot of books. That helped the most. I also took a college-level online course and learned more through my adult school. I really love grammar and writing. Because it's important to me, I take my writing seriously.
Do you use or plan to use camera traps to monitor flowers for pollinator species such as hummingbirds? Curious to know if or how remote cameras play into your research.
Do you have any anger towards your parents for putting you in such a disadvantaged position in life?
I do, hopefully, I'll have a lot to talk about in the category after this upcoming field season. But yes ill be monitoring an endangered population like this for a few months this year.
I was given the unique oppurtunity to go on a tropical research-based trip in High School to Panama, I never looked back.
Sean, can you explain 1. The most common species you encounter in CT and Costa Rica and 2. How you came to focus on conservation in birds?
In Connecticut, we only have the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. In Costa Rica, it depends on where I am, where I'm doing most of the Hummingbird research it's Green-breasted Mango. In the overall country, it's probably Rufus-tailed Hummingbird.
My 8 year old wants to know if you primarily stick to just hummingbirds or do you research other birds?
Glad to answer him/her, I do work with other species the other main one is Neotropical migrants, meaning birds that winter in Central and South America, but breed in North America.
