TechnologyWe’re Kor Adana and Ryan Kazanciyan of Mr. Robot

Oct 6th 2017 by whoismrrobot • 18 Questions • 93 Points

My name is Sean Stratton I am a 24 year old environmental scientist and I am currently running for New Jersey District 18 Assembly as the Green Party candidate. I’m here to talk to you about my political platform and the experience of running as a young adult and third party candidate.

I decided to run for office 5 months ago after a friend’s tap water test came back containing 82 ppb of lead. This led me to research the federal Lead and Copper Rule along with conducting Open Public Record Act requests (for anyone not in New Jersey this is called Freedom of Information) to my hometown and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. What I found was that my hometown was not sampling the correct locations as per the federal regulations and they were not providing the correct notification to residents who had their homes tested. From this I began to look at other towns and found that we have multiple towns and cities here in New Jersey that have breached the federal action level for lead in residential drinking water. 3 examples are Newark, Trenton, and Milltown. This is significant because even during the height of the Flint Michigan crisis, Flint never exceeded federal standards.

This is when I decided I would run for office; I believe that everyone has the right to clean drinking water and in order to provide this we need to drastically rebuild our infrastructure including our water distribution system. I also believe that every worker deserves a livable wage which is why I support increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour here in New Jersey. Finally, I believe that all citizens no matter how rich or how poor have the right to healthcare. I support universal healthcare and will push for a New Jersey single payer healthcare system.

EDIT: Wow! 7 hours and I definitely got way more questions than anticipated! Was great talking with everyone and I definitely learned a lot! Remember to vote in your state and local elections, they're important!

Q:

There's footage of you chasing him all the way to the elevator before ( seemingly ) getting ushered away. If you had somehow made it into the elevator, what would you have asked/ how would you have reacted?

A:

Have you ever wanted to collaborate with You Suck at Cooking?

Q:

Do you ever like to remind your daughters that youre a real disney princess? Do they ever ask you to sing like Anna?

A:

Could you explain a bit about why you guys want to be separated from Spain?

Sorry kinda oblivious from what happened until I saw the reddit posts.

Q:

Hi Charlie!

For years and years my dream job has always been 'National Geographic Photographer'. Seen as I'm likely to never make it, can you humour me and give me some of the downsides to doing the job that you do? :)

A:

What jobs have you held that qualify you as an environmental scientist, and how long were you in that/those position(s)?

Also, how do you plan on paying for the programs you are supporting in your OP?

Q:

Hahahaha I debated cramming myself into that elevator...

I would have made sure to give Richard Smith (and his apparent advisor, former Senator Saxby Chambliss) my bag of money and told them to enjoy their $7.25 million contract with the IRS! http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/03/equifax-irs-fraud-protection-contract-243419

A:

Dearly, yes

Q:

they dont really care. and they constantly tell me NOT to sing. they are BRUTAL

A:

Some have historical claims, the crown of Aragon (wich Catalonia was a part of) and Castilia (former Spain as we usually name it) were united back in 1469 and since then cultural differences always had a part on nationalistic claims.

More recently since the instauration of the parlamentary monarchy (after franco) the spanish territory was split into "comunidades autonomas) which everyone of them has different autonomic competences, Basque Country had more economic privileges than Catalonia and that inspired some turmoil within the population

Back in 2006 the spain government destroyed "the estatut" wich was a sort of declaration of competences by the Generalitat, that was a big mistake since "the estatut" didnt infringe any known law and even was similar as other bills in vigor by other "comunidades autonomas"

Years of political immobility by central government and impoverishment of the general population made that independentist and nationalist parties gain support within the "non-political people"

As for me I am not independentist but I am for democracy, and the measures PP (governing party) took in Catalonia are unacceptable.

(excuse my english, if you have any more question or want a clarification please do)

Q:

Hey EasyTigrr - never give up! Its fun and adventurous but we spend a lot of time cold, bored, tired and hungry - I certainly do when I'm shooting pictures of wildlife - oh and a lot of time needing the toilet! But i vowed I would never complain about my job so I cant say too much without breaking that vow!

A:

I graduated from Rutgers University with my degree in environmental science. I have been working as an environmental consultant since graduating which has been about 2 and a half years. My work mainly consists of monitoring contaminated sites and designing remediation strategies.

Fixing the lead problem is a costly project. However, in the short term we can provide filters and bottled water for residents that are impacted through subsidies or partnering with corporations or small business owners.

In the long term by passing Universal Healthcare we will free up between 20-30% of each municipalities budget. This will allow us to begin massive infrastructure projects to remove and update our piping and water utilities for our towns and cities.

State-level universal healthcare will be paid for by an increased payroll tax of 6% on employers and 2% on employees. This will allow us to provide healthcare to all residents of New Jersey.

Q:

Did he see you?

A:

Love your show Babish! It's one of the few channels I regularly follow and keep up to date with!

Might be a personal question, but noticed you stopped wearing a ring in your videos? Single now? Up for a bromance? I know someone... (it's me, it's always been me).

Q:

Can you tell us anything about the upcoming Frozen 2?

A:

what do Catalonian participants think is going to happen next?

Q:

What was the most difficult photoshoot you ever went on?

A:

How will passing universal healthcare free up budget?

Q:

At the time, I wasn't sure former CEO Richard Smith saw me because he played it so cool. But in watching video footage later, there is a moment where he looks behind him right before the hearing starts. His face is pretty priceless!

A:

Thanks very much!

And I guess enough time has passed that I can talk about this haha, yes, I went through a divorce last year. Loooooong story.

Q:

I wish. but they are ALWAYS WATCHING

A:

Well the Generalitat (catalonia government) has as next step to execute the DUI (unilateral independence declaration) as it was stated if the referendum ended with a YES majority

The Spain Government could execute the article 155 of the constitution which would render la Generalitat without power

I doubt they both will do anything of that, if both governments have a bit of political wisdom they might start negotiations in the following weeks if not we might be in for some tumultuous days

As for now there are general strikes convoked for tomorrow.

Q:

Thanks for your question - anything in the Amazon! the Amazon is such a hard place to work. It's not just dark but it's hot and full of mosquitos and it all basically looks the same. I have spent over a year in the Amazon and really only have a handful of images I'm happy with. Technically the hardest was shooting an image of a beaver under the Teton mountains in Grand Teton National Park - the image was half under water and half above - it took three weeks to get the shot. Thanks!

A:

Currently Municipalities have to pay for the insurance of the town employees. This is a significant portion of a town's budget as it is between 20-30%

Q:

Can you give us screenshot?

A:

When you did a collab with the guy who does the funny nature stuff and you started rambling about drugs, how much of it was a joke and how much was based on real life?

Q:

How have you managed to look the same age for your entire career? It's really impressive.

A:

How are your thoughts on the national police after the way they acted to the voters yesterday?

Q:

What's the best shot that you missed? Either by equipment trouble or something you saw on the way to location?

A:

What is your plan once Universal Healthcare doesn't pass?

A:

Q:

good genes baby! and a high pitched voice. and staying out of the sun

A:

Horrible, but I will take the opportunity to explain something.

Some years ago I was protesting against the increase of university prices in Barcelona and the "mossos de esquadra" (catalonian police force) charged at us unprovoked and injured a lot of people

By this im not taking heat off the national police actions, they had absolutely no place in a first world country but I dont like the narrative of "look at these bad spanish dudes" when some years ago I was being beaten by Catalonian policemen.

We cant forget that they were sent with aggresion in mind, the spanish government (Partido Popular, the remains of the franco party, but this is a discussion for another day) knew they would strike people, with this I want to say, those policement were given orders, and they abide them

Q:

That's a hard one as I've blocked all those moments out of my head and never want to relive them. I have spent days fuming over missed moments. I remember flying over Victoria Falls in a helicopter shooting stills of it and there were four guys fishing on the edge and a huge rainbow was rising through them and I got the shot but i was shooting with a shutter speed that was too slow so the image was not sharp. It was totally my fault and I still get annoyed about that when I see the picture.

A:

To keep fighting for Universal Healthcare. We may not be successful the first time around, but there is no need to give up. I believe this is something worth fighting for.

Q:

and how did he respond if he did? (sorry to piggy back u/hrtl)

A:

Link for the lazy.

Give some love for Ashwin, when it comes to nature there is nobody more knowledgeable.

Q:

Would you confuse Dax and Zach Braff at a slight distance?

A:

I am a Spaniard. From Madrid, so you can imagine my views on this matter. I was just passing by to thank your for being so moderate and sensible in your comments. That's all I wanted to see yesterday. Whether you vote yes or no, the kind of sensibility you are showing in your answers is what we all need (independentists and not). Thank you, if I am honest I was expecting some sort of radical answers here, but I have been pleasantly surprised and I wanted to thank you for that.

Now the question: as a catalonian, where do you think your leaders are headed now in terms of negotiations with the central government? What are your views on the future of Catalonia in the near future?

All the best fellow citizen.

Q:

Hey Charlie, I love your work! I am an aspiring wildlife photographer. I have started to amass a portfolio and Instagram following and am just now starting to work on more in depth projects such as searching for mountain lions in Western Alberta. I am wondering if you have any tips for someone who is looking to enter the wildlife photography world? Thanks!

A:

So more taxes for NJ residents, who are already taxed to death? It’s the biggest reason I had to move out of the state.

A:

Thanks for learning

Q:

absolulty. or in a dark hallway

A:

Thank you for your words, love Madrid, I go twice every year.

As for your question, Puigdemont & friends might use the bad response of the government to push a negotiation leaning on the words of EU (excessive use of force and so on) they might try to establish the DUI but I think that will be most unreasonable.

My views on the near future is of unrest and increase on independent backing, I wish they sit to talk but it seems so unlikely

Q:

Hey thanks for your message - ok - be different. That's my suggestion. You're entering a world saturated with images of wildlife so you have to think of ways of shooting that work for you and are perhaps a little different from standard. When I first got an assignment from Nat Geo on otters I looked at everything that had been done - every image I could find on google. I wanted to know what had been done by everyone else so that I could not do the same. It's a really hard thing to do but you have to if you want to stand out. Mountain lions would be a wonderful way to go - check out Steve Winter's incredible work on them - good luck!

A:

It would be an increase in payroll taxes, however the money individuals would save from decreased healthcare costs and free insurance would far outweigh the negatives of the increased tax on payroll.

Q:

Did anyoneone at the time realize what you were doing?

A:

Hey Andrew, just curious. Where did this alter ego 'Oliver Babish' come from?

Love your show! :)

Q:

How do you feel about koalas? They are quite similar to the sloth

This. As a fellow Spaniard against Catalonian independence myself, I got into this thread expecting a radical view on the issue and fallacies left and right, and found a moderate rational person, with a very understanding view of both sides. This is the kind of people we need in this country.

Q:

Hello Sir! It must be great seeing and capturing all those wonders of nature. What's the most dangerous situation involving an animal, person(s), or just the environment you've been in while on the job?

A:

You are very passionate about the lead and water infrastructure problems your state is facing. Are there any other environmental issues that you plan on attacking?

Q:

I think everyone realized what I was doing. Luckily, free speech is (mostly) still a thing.

A:

The West Wing! Never really expected the show to take off, so I kinda named it arbitrarily...

And thanks!

Q:

koalas get high off eucalyptus and most of them have chlamydia. these are facts

A:

wow im blushing

Q:

Thanks for the question - i get asked this a lot. It's weird because I haven't had very many dangerous experiences. I try never to put myself in dangerous situations with animals as i'd be being really irresponsible if I did. As for people - kind of the same. I smile a lot and treat people really fairly and as a result i've never been in a hostile situation. I'm sure it will happen at some point - and I'm not looking forward to it. Canoeing across Victoria Falls in a deflating canoe and getting pulled into the rip going over the edge while trying to avoid a crocodile in the dark, before reaching the island we were heading for and following hippo trails in the dark and climbing down the face of the falls to get a shot of a moon rainbow, in a country I was working in illegally while the secret police were looking for us - well to be honest that was pretty scary - but it was a long time ago now!

A:

Other issues include PFOA's in our water, along with overuse of pesticides. I also plan to push to near 100% renewable energy by 2035.

Q:

Anything happened after? Were you banned from ever attending again?

A:

Hey Babish, Thanks for doing this AMA.

Got any more plans to work with Sean from Hot Ones? Really liked the stuff you did together and you seem to get on well.

Q:

Favorite fun fact on sloths?

A:

One of the things that surprises me the most is how biased big part of the Spanish media is. I did read things like "Unacceptable aggressions from the catalans to the national police", "Separatists spread out fake pictures about injured in the media", "Catalan police colluding with separatists", etc. instead of what the rest of the media in the world showed. If Spanish people only feeds from these media, I can understand that you think that Catalans pro-Independence are radicals and uneducated people that will jump to your throat if your name is "Garcia". But believe me, this is a very civic and peaceful movement. Unfortunately, nowadays, everybody with a political opinion will get insulted, threatened or worse in the social media by a minority of assholes that feel safe hiding behind their computer, no matter what side of the political spectrum they are.

So, my point, don't be surprised about "moderation", most of us Catalans are.

Q:

Hi Charlie. Any thoughts on Sean Penn's character in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? When not taking photos of wildlife, what subjects do you like to photograph?

A:

Have you thought of running as one of the other parties to get a larger platform?

Q:

I am fortunate to not have had any real interaction with the capitol police, before or after. One officer asked me to take my bag of money off my lap and put in on the ground, but that is it.

However, now that I am public, I would not be surprised if folks will watch me more closely. I am sure we will see soon!

A:

Hey man no problem!

I'm gonna be on First We Feast next week or so! Sean, Anthony Fantano and I do an exotic melon tasting as the three bald melons of YouTube.

Q:

they only poop once a week

A:

polarization is an absolute cancer, I find very healthy to turn off the TV

Q:

Thanks for the question - loved the film by the way. What struck me about Sean Penn's role the most was that at the moment he was about to get the shot of the snow leopard he pulled away to just watch it - that really impressed me (although it was just a movie). I remember doing the same the first time I ever saw an otter underwater - a moment I'd waited my whole life for (even though I was only 17 at the time) i just thought - i need to see this rather than ruining it by shooting a picture. I watch people on safari in africa and wish for their sakes they'd do the same - but then I rarely do! I shoot tons of stuff other than wildlife these days - i particularly love photographing tourists taking selfies. thanks!

A:

The closest my agenda is to the two parties would be the Justice Democrats. However, based on their ties to big corporations I would not run as a democrat because I do not want to take any corporate money as the only people I want to represent are my constituents.

Q:

So what did people say? How did they react to your getup? Did the Equifax CEO acknowledge you or at least give you an odd look?

A:

I’m so bad at cooking chicken. Like, I am the worst chicken chef alive. What are your tips on producing some tender, flavorful, juicy chicken instead of the dry or raw garbage that comes out of my kitchen?

Q:

Are there any Good Places scenes youve had trouble filming from laughing so much?

A:

What is the rational behind a separation which would immediately remove Catalonia from the EU and it would be a small country without any diplomatic links ?

Q:

Hey Charlie, did you go to a photography school or did you teach yourself?

Im wondering if its worth going to school for photography or nat (geo) :)

A:

Do you have any strong feelings about university's in New York as compared to New Jersey?

Q:

I didn't catch it in person, but watching videos after the fact, I saw Richard Smith look back at me and make a pretty priceless alarmed face. But I was seated in the row right behind his advisors, and one of his PR folks was seated immediately to my right.

I caught several of them giving me dirty looks throughout. One guy in particular tried to stare me down in the beginning. (But I don't scare easily)

A:

Get bone-in/skin on chicken breasts - sear the fuck out of them in a ripping hot pan, then place in the oven and finish them at 400F until they're 165F internally. Use the fond in the pan to make a pan sauce. Wuhbam.

Q:

when mindy st clair first asks me for coke, i had tears coming out of my eyes and snot out of my nose i was laughing so hard

A:

Now that is a hard question.

While some independentist have economic reasonings behind them (wich Im not sure they are quite right) the majority of nationalistic spirit comes from cultural heritage and rejection of the idea of Spain.

As for being outside the EU they (us? I dont know) allegedly have a plan to become a member after the separation (wich I dont know how will they do it with Spanish veto but wtv)

Also last actions taken by the spanish government puts Spain in a bad position infront of the EU so the discussion of the relationship of a theoretically catalonian republic is kinda a bogus point right now

But good question! I might complete my answer later

Q:

HI one-two-rule - i failed spectacularly at school and left when I was just fifteen. However a year or so later I got onto a course studying photography at Falmouth School or Art and Design in Cornwall, UK. What the course taught me was the basics of photography and that really gave me good grounding; certainly as a wildlife photographer. Too often wildlife photographers forget that they have to also be photographers and learn and practice what that means. There is no set way into Nat Geo - we all come from completely different backgrounds and disciplines. Many worked for news papers and some went to college to learn. There are also plenty of courses people go on to take their photography to the next level. I guess the Eddie Adams workshop is the most well known. There you get set assignments and you work with editors to create stories. The key thing to remember is - National Geographic photographers are all story tellers as well as being photographers and journalists. Our images need to tell the story we are telling visually. Hope that helps!

A:

I agree with New York's legislation that provides free education to residents who earn less than $110,000. I believe that New Jersey should move towards a free college education program because it is an investment in our youth.

Q:

Lol I'd love to be inside his head during that thought process.

"I'm going to intimidate this person who is clearly more of a maniac than I am."

I think if that was me, in the moment in which I was attempting to physically intimidate a person dressed as the monopoly guy, I would be struck with a sudden overwhelming need to reevaluate my life.

A:

If you were to hit 2 million subscribers would you consider releasing the Fraiser episode?

Q:

Hi Kristen! I love The Good Place, such a great show!!

I also love reading the down-to-earth, realistic interviews you and your husband do about the reality of being in a serious/long-term relationship, with all its ups and downs. If you had one major piece of advice for other couples, what would it be?

A:

Fellow spaniard here, im from Galicia and i love Cataluña (im a Barça fan and i've been multiple times to the Pirenees and to Barcelona).

I saw that you voted No on some of the responses you made, and i want to know the opinion you might have regarding some questions, so...

  1. Why did you vote instead of staying home?
  2. Is it true that the Generalitat has done close to nothing in the last 2/3 years besides from working towards this situation? (Political Parties like C's and PP have said this multiple times)
  3. Do you think that making Catalonians vote for a reelection of their regional government would be a possible solution to this conflict?

Q:

What's something you could share with us that surprised you about vultures seeing as how you probably observe them more than the average person?

A:

If elected, what would you do in your first few months?

Q:

And THAT is why satire works. Him intimidating me as a plain clothes protestor would feel meaningful and important to him, but intimidating me as the Monopoly Guy fiddling with my monocle might make him reassess.

A:

I'm still hurting but yes.

Q:

try hard. its uncomfortable, but worth it.

A:

1-I was not going to vote, but after seeing how the police charged and beat people I decided it was a statement for democracy and defiance against those measures.

2-As far as I know in the last years the Generalitat booked many appointments to discuss the issue and the central government never answered.

3-Yes, if it is done correctly

Thanks for your questions!

I want to visit galicia sometime soon

Q:

Thanks for your question - I guess the thing that struck me the most was that when you take them away from the fighting and brutality of a carcass, they become very regal and beautiful creatures. watching them at the nest you really see this - they are very caring with their chicks. I love vultures- they're awesome. Thanks!

A:

I would put forward a bill to immediately provide water filters to residents in areas that are currently having their drinking water impacted by lead, and I would begin working on a bill with bi-partisan support to rebuild our aging infrastructure which would include not only our roads, and bridges, but also our waste water treatment plants, our water distribution network, and our water utilities.

Q:

Did anyone approach you about your outfit?

A:

Hey, I love your show! Did you ever run across a movie food that turned out to be too difficult to recreate? If so, what was it and what made it too difficult?

Q:

How does Dax handle knowing your one true soul mate is Craig Ferguson? Can we forking get some flying cheeky monkeys around here!

A:

Did you vote yes or no?

Q:

Hi Charlie!

I really enjoyed watching the 'I Bought A Rainforest' programme you made a few years ago, and it raised some very interesting points. Do you still own or regularly visit your patch? More generally, what do you think the best options are for 'us' (relatively wealthy westerners) to conserve rainforests or other habitats elsewhere in the world without obstructing the development of local communities?

A:

as a hydrologist who is studying water law in Colorado, I find your water goals to be noble. I do wonder how do you plan to remedy these in instances where water contamination comes as a result of the pipes within a private residence? would you be for a national effort to support upgrading underfunded communities pipes? How much of the GDP do feel is appropriate to address issues of water quality?

Q:

I got a lot of questions from other folks in line, but I was fortunate enough to not get hassled by capitol police. One officer did ask me take my bag of dollar bills off my lap though!

A:

Hah definitely the opening scene of Eat Drink Man Woman - lots of requests for it, which means there's a lot of people out there that greatly overestimate my cooking ability.

Q:

Dax is OK with it. Hes VERY open to anything. Hes a free spirit, and also often my wingman.

A:

I voted No, Im not convinced of the independentist claims and some of the politicians invested in it are plain corrupt, so is the PP (spanish government) though.

I voted as an exercise of democracy and defiance against oppression

Q:

Thanks - yes an important question. Glad you liked the series by the way. I just think we need to take more collective responsibility for the eco-systems that are of global importance - like the Amazon. And the more I try to understand conservation the more I realise that that means understanding the dynamics of poverty and figuring out what we can do to make peoples lives better and more productive in these sensitive areas so that chopping down forests is not the key to their survival. We get very cross in the west with poor people who chop trees down in order to survive - it makes me mad. Of course we all wood do the same in their position. Sadly the answers to these problems are very complicated and too often we say things like 'if we just changed the values of the global economy and if we just did....' the truth is we are very bad at changing - especially on a global scale. But we need to ultimately. That starts by all of us doing our bit and investing in schemes that are designed to lift people out of poverty and provide them with jobs and education and options beyond destroying globally important resources. I worked with the CREES Foundation when I made IBAR and they have some great agro-forestry programmes - getting loggers into replanting forests is a pretty good scheme. I haven't been back to the land for years by the way - last year I signed over a lease to the National Park for 99yrs. They are going to build a ranger station on it. cheers!

A:

Contamination within an individuals home is a serious issue, however we need to put a program into place to help residents get lead solder/ lead pipes out of individuals home. I believe it is the government's responsibility to protect it's citizens. At the moment I do not have a number for what portion of the GDP is appropriate.

Q:

How did you get a seat positioned directly behind the Equifax CEO in a way that you were also on camera without causing suspicion?

A:

What's your favorite drink to relax with after a long day of filming?

Q:

Hey Kristen!! Huge fan.

Any chance of a Veronica Mars reboot? You and Rob seem so into it! Why not make it happen?

A:

Who do you think stands to profit most from an independent Catalonia? Surely not the common people with all the travel and commerce restrictions that will come with it?

Q:

HI, thanks for doing this. Can you describe a typical shoot in terms of time commitment? I mean, I have the impression that you go to a location where you think your subject might be and then just sit there 18 hours a day for weeks on end. Is that accurate or typical?

A:

have you spoken with, or would you consider speaking to, local municipalities and plumbing experts on action plans? What sort of solutions are you pushing for? would you be for a government contract or contest system for cheap retrofitting solutions?

Q:

Oh, I absolutely caused suspicion, but luckily my actions fell within protected free speech. I knew which seat to sit in because I have watched and attended many Senate Banking hearings as a (plain-clothes) advocate.

A:

Old fashioned all the way

Q:

we are trying!

A:

Bourgeoisie, primarily and independentist politicians and friends, I dont see clear advantages on the short or mid term

Q:

thanks for the question - well yes that's pretty accurate. The older I get though the less I choose shoots where I have to do that though. But the deal is - the more time you put in to shooting images of animals, the more you get out. It's a really simple equation. It also depends where and what your shooting. If I'm shooting a specific bird at a nest for instance it's all about sitting in the blind and waiting - for the bird and the light. If I'm shooting in Africa its about driving around and looking for the subject. You do have to get used to lots of early mornings and long hours though - but its fun. Thanks

A:

I have spoken to my hometown's water utility. They do not believe there is a problem and that is mainly because the state agency is not raising the issue of lead with local water utilities.

Q:

Obvious question: how'd you do it? How did you make your way to that perfect seat without getting kicked out?

A:

What happened to your theme song?

Q:

Hi Kristen - long time listener, first time caller. What's it like working with Dax as a director, and how's life around the house when you're in the midst of doing a project together?

Love your work - as a dad with three daughters, I particularly love the character you created in Veronica Mars. My oldest and I binge-watched it together and we're both big fans.

A:

Have you seen any voting fraud?

Q:

Hi Charlie, do you work with a team on site to capture photos that are so close to the animals? Agree, otters are the best. Thanks!

A:

can you clarify what they stated? did they say there simply wasn't a problem with city owned pipes? or did they say the private area wasn't an issue? [or did they not fully answer the question]

also, why don't cities/governments advise residents about what type of pipe they should consider installing OR give options to setup an additional filter system where the city line meets the private connection?

Q:

Credit for the perfect seat goes to a very dedicated intern, who was first in line for the hearing at 7 AM! As for not getting kicked out, I had heard stories from other activists about what is and isn't allowed, and skirted that line as closely as I could. Fun fact: you are allowed to wear costumes, but you can't hold up signs or make a lot of noise.

A:

It was the Frasier theme song, I ain't got the rights to it!

Q:

dax writes very wuickly. he can bang out a script in 3 weeks which is insane. he will check in to a hotel in the area to write without the kids buging him all day, adn we go visit him every 2 days or so. Hes phenomenally deciscive as a director and usually very stressed so i have to take good care of him while hes working

A:

Not personally, but some friends saw members of scc (catalonian civil society) voting "No" several time, mind you that group has ties with neonazis so yeah...

I also saw pictures of a thicc boy voting yes many times, that is what an irregular referendum gives :/

Q:

Hi thanks for your question. I tend to work alone or with just one assistant. But if I want to get very close to animals I work on my own as it's hard enough getting close to animals as it is - extra people just make it harder. I use remote cameras a lot - cameras I can control from a distance. BY doing that I can get my camera very close to some animals without disturbing them at all - which is a always the aim. Yes otters are the best!

A:

It is a mixture of both. The town stated there are no lead service lines which is inaccurate, and the DEP is not properly reviewing to ensure that the correct Tier locations are being sampled as per the LCR by the town.

A filter system where the city line meets the private connection would not work, mainly because these lines are inaccessible from the surface. I recommend filters at the end of the tap or through a pitcher.

Q:

you can't hold up signs or make a lot of noise

Interesting (╭ರ_•́)

So by "a lot" does that mean "some" is ok?

A:

Is there a famous dish that you refuse to make?

Love the show! Binging your show makes my work day less boring!

Q:

Still love watching and rewatching that Toto - Africa video you did with Dax. Who got the idea?

A:

Does thicc stand for something, or are those boys just cute?

Q:

What are your top tips for taking photos that look nearly as good as yours?

A:

how would you propose filters be paid for? At some point local government can only be held responsible for providing water at a pre-determined quality. If cities were able to effectively argue that they provided proper service in courts, who would be footing the bill for all the filters? would people be required to buy them?

It sounds like there may or may not be lead service pipes in your particular town, but in some towns there probably are. Some infrastructure is so old that the people who authorized those decisions are long gone, and made the wrong choice innocently. considering water utilities are essentially self-funded and use long term bonds for future demand projects, can municipal water suppliers even afford to address this situation if they caused it? Could courts even rule against them because of the national economic impacts the ruling would have? it seems more like federal or state level assistance would be needed to fund a solution to this issue. I don't think municipalities are capable of fixing this one fiscally speaking.

Q:

I mean, I dropped my monocle at least ten times and crinkled those hundred dollar bills, so.

A:

The turkey-stuffed-in-a-monkfish from Malcolm in the Middle. I don't have room in my heart for that.

And thanks!!

Q:

i decided noone looks at vaca pictures but maybe if we made a music video we would wanna rewatch it someday!

A:

the ass was fat

Q:

Light, light, light and emotion. You know so many people obsess about megapixels and cameras and lenses but its always to me about emotion and that trumps everything else. You can have a picture thats technically useless but is loaded with emotion - thats the image the editors at Nat Geo will pic. Hope that helps

A:

I agree that the federal and state governments need to step in and assist communities that have been affected. This is not just a New Jersey or Flint problem, this is a problem that is occurring all over the country.

Q:

What kind of costumes? Because I'd go dressed as Shang Tsung and show them who the real stealer of souls is.

A:

Will there be a Halloween special?

Q:

Given the option, would you like to have been cast as Janet? That role seems like it would be a ton of fun.

A:

Vape nashe boooiiiii

Q:

Hey! I coincidentally just watched a show that you appeared on last night while surfing Netflix. "The Great Yellowstone Thaw" or something like that, in which you were out in Yellowstone on the Snake shooting Otters. Fantastic stuff and Kudos for hanging out in the Wyoming winter like that. I live in Jackson and can commiserate a bit.

Do you stay in the park while conducting these projects, and what have you found is the best way to stay (relatively) warm while hanging out motionless in the dead of winter?

A:

The lead in the water sounds like a real issue, but I don't agree at all about the minimum wage or healthcare. What can people do about cleaning up the water without voting for you?

Q:

The sky is the limit, my friend! Apparently, someone once dressed as Lincoln, complete with a two-foot high hat. (I think they may get touchy if you wear a mask though - fake mustaches only)

A:

Yessir, some foods from Hannibal (TV Series)...ethically sourced.

Q:

actually YES

A:

Hila Kleiners represent

Q:

Thanks for your question - i live in JH TOO AND LOVE IT!!! I tend to work mainly in the park and in the NF. And to stay warm - hmmm - the oxbow at -20 is not somewhere I've ever managed to stay warm - four toe warmers on each foot and they still freeze. we were doing 8 hrs without moving on The Thaw shoot - it was not nice and the otters didnt show up much that year. Thanks for the question!

A:

The first step would be holding their local representatives and civil servants accountable. Constantly reminding them that it is unacceptable to have lead in our water is a good start

Q:

What if you are dressed as a sign?

A:

What is the weirdest request for a video that you've gotten?

Q:

Despite the fact I am almost 25 years old, can you and Dax adopt me?

A:

If what most of you guys want is to manage your own money and send less taxes to Madrid, why don’t you go for an agreement like the one with the País Vasco autonomous region where they basically can be financially independent from Madrid (things like manage their own money and taxes) without being strictly a independent country? as I understand (by a friend) Catalonia was offered a similar deal 30 years ago but they rejected it.

Q:

Do you feel like capturing moments like these for as large an audience as National Geographic will help people care more about conservation and climate change?

A:

I live next to Milltown so this is alarming. What has the DEP done in response to your findings?

Q:

Worth a shot.

A:

One dude asked me to eat him yesterday - does that count

Q:

sure! are you good at chores? do you like waking up early with your new siblings so we can sleep? do you play catan? these are all requirements

A:

Because we cant, we tried to have these privileges in 2006 but the government nullified it without proper legal backing, that is one of the points that increased the indepententist lines

Q:

Hi - I hope so but I am also very realistic about not over exaggerating the value of what we do. I think if any organisation on earth can exact change it's National Geographic and I'm proud to work for them trying to do that. But I'm also realistic about my own impact. I guess I do some good - is hoot conservation stories that I hope will change peoples minds. The issue that we really need to fix however is that we tend to change the minds of people in the west far more than people on the ground in the countries where we tell the stories. We need to make more impact in places like south america and Africa - I have to say that Nat Geo is working on this and making real in roads. Thanks!

A:

The DEP issued a letter to my hometown notifying the water utility that they must send updated notification to residents. As per Milltown and other cities I am not currently aware of any actions by the DEP.

Q:

I am betting that they will close that loophole very quickly.

A:

Where do you buy your clothes? You have some very nice button-ups.

Q:

I fit this criteria. However, I will only play Catan if I can play the blue pieces.

A:

Dude I have to say that as an outsider, who lives in BCN.... What was negotiated for those regions is an aberration. It should never have happened and is probably a big driver for this whole mess. You can't have a unified country where everybody acts for themselves. Not attacking you, but just stating my opinion on what I think is unrealistic from catalan nationalists.

Q:

Hi Charlie, while taking pictures for nature if u see a prey vs predator moment in wild are you allowed to help the prey survive?

A:

How do you feel about suits as athletic wear? In all seriousness, I'm sure you are very aware of the climate issues that are endangering the future of our species. Do you have any plans to combat climate change either directly or indirectly?

Q:

I have heard rumors they might...

A:

Why thank you - I'm a total Marshallista, but other than that, Uniqlo, Banana Republic, and Zara.

Q:

you are DEFINIETLY gonna get adopted since i love people with strong opinions

A:

Yeah, I agree, its spanish political tradition to make things half-assedly and then deal badly with the consequences

Q:

HI kd2135 - thanks for your question. We get asked this a lot. My answer is always no - I would never get involved in a predator v prey interaction in the wild. It's really hard sometimes to watch moments when prey animals get attacked but my job isn't to rescue them and change the dynamic of predators and prey.

A:

I want to push New Jersey to near 100% alternative energy by 2035.

Q:

What is your favorite Monopoly game piece? Mine is the thimble!

A:

What is your go to lazy meal to cook?

Q:

How did Anna make it to the Wreck-It Ralph 2? And will she be there for long?

A:

As a Spaniard from southern Spain (heritage from basque Country, Galicia and Catalonia) I don't believe in the Catalonian Independence whatsoever. The claims for independence imo are simply not there, the claims for reform, absolutely there. Our conservative party has basically ruined any possibility of dialogue and diplomacy with the Catalonian government by sabotaging any attempt of reform. That has been a huge push towards independence.

Having said that, I am for the right of the Catalonian people having a say in what they want. It doesn't have to be a binding referendum, but beating the shit out of people who just want to go to a public building to say whether or not they would like to be an independent country... makes me so ashamed! I am so ashamed of our government, I am disgusted, my great grandparents from Barcelona never once in their lives considered themselves Catalonian and not Spanish and if they were alive today to see police officers drag and push elderly people across the street, they would think we were back in the times of Franco.

A lot of people think that voting the subject of independence makes you a 'separatist', not at all! I know so many people that want to vote and say NO.

It is just unfair, the treatment Catalonia is receiving is simply unfair. No reform, no dialogue, not allowed to vote (even if it is a non binding referendum), not allowed to use public institutions to ask what people want. How are we a democracy? The central government keeps finding shelter in the constitution, saying it is anti constitutional. Constitutions have been reformed and changed everywhere, dozens, hundreds of times. The Basque Country has a better economic deal with the central government than Catalonia, why not allow them to have a better deal too?

We were very close to achieving this when we had the PSOE (socialist party) but the conservatives came in and took several steps back in this matter.

Many friends of mine said to me, 'you know what, I had my doubts whether to remain or leave, but after I saw a mother and her two kids be rugby tackled in the middle of a street by police... fuck this. I want out of this'. Whether that is true or not, I don't know, but the sentiment is there.

EDIT: The heritage part is relevant because Basque Country, Galicia and Catalonia are basically the three major states with some to a lot of independence mentality, as well as separate languages etc. My basque family has in the past expressed they are not Spanish, but Basque, yet my Catalonian family never once mentioned not being Spanish and wanting to be independent.

EDIT 2: Vasque country --> Basque country. Sorry for the typo. In Spanish we say, Pais Vasco, I often get this mixed up when I write it down in English.

Q:

Have you explored any other types of photography? If you weren't shooting wildlife, what would you be taking pictures of?

A:

Will you survive having your dreams crushed by reality?

Q:

I have to go with the iron. Gotta keep this suit pressed.

A:

Those stir fry kits they have nowadays fucking rule.

And this is gonna be embarrassing but if I'm drunk, it's too late to order take-out, and there ain't nothing in the house - buttered goddamn pasta. Been my favorite thing since I was like 0.

Q:

ive seen the sequence we recorded and it is FUNNY AS HELL

A:

Thanks! I voted NO, as you said, also I want to take this moment to apologize to all southerners for many of henious and devil things some (a very small minority) of Catalonians say about the south of Spain

I think its time for the democrats to unite, whether they are pro or against independence

Q:

Thanks for the question - more and more these days I shoot stories of people. I'm off shooting a story on isolated tribes in the Amazon in a few weeks. It was hard going from wildlife photography to people but I love being challenged and tend to get bored easily if I'm not. I just completed my first shoot suing studio lighting too - that was tough! thanks!

A:

Yes. I believe that this will be an uphill battle, but just because its hard to make change doesn't mean its not worth fighting for it.

Q:

What law do you practice?

A:

Hey Andrew, big fan!

What's up with you, Shaun, and Antony buying melons? Are we going to get a melon based sitcom starring the 3 of you?

Q:

What was your favorite of Veronica Mars's comebacks/snarky one liners? I fully admit to using some of them in real life.

A:

how do you feel about the low participation? I know that it's because the police stepped in, and I understand that it would likely still have been very far in favor of Yes, but still. Do you think the information gathered in the refendum is enough to base a declaration of independence on? do you think it could lead to unrest in catalonia?

Q:

I'd like to be a wildlife photographer with an emphasis on conservation. Do you have any advice for a young professional working her way though this career? Thank you!

A:

What have you tried to do in regards to helping fix our drinking water situation?

What is the average age of people you are running against? I applaud you for standing up for something at such a young age!

Q:

I do policy and advocacy work, focused mostly on corporate accountability and financial reform at the moment - so I don't spend a lot of time in courtrooms. But I graduated from UCLA Law as part of their Public Interest Law and Policy and Critical Race Studies programs, and I am admitted to practice law in California.

A:

God I wish - upcoming episode of Sean in the Wild!

Q:

As VM changes a tire TROY: "FLAT?" VM: "IM JUST AS GOD MADE ME"

A:

I know that it's because the police stepped in

Not really, the referendum was called quite irregularly, even in relation with the Generalitat norms, so most of the "no" voters just stayed at home because they did not recognize the referendum as valid, as of today if everyone voted I think the NO would win with a low margin.

Do you think the information gathered in the refendum is enough to base a declaration of independence on?

No but I think it serves as a proof that Catalonian people want to have the right of a legal, pacted and supervised referendum with all democratic securities.

do you think it could lead to unrest in catalonia?

Sadly yes, but I think that the unrest comes more of the police repression, catalonian independent movement was characterized (at least until last months) with "seny", "seny" in Catalonian could be translated to "level-headedness" as we (the Catalonians) always acted peacefully and with moderation in mind.

Thanks for your questions!

Q:

Thanks for the question - i guess my advice is cover subjects you are most passionate about and really understand them. If you want to shoot wildlife and conservation stories then I would start out by getting work in conservation - ideally in the media side of it and work from there. It's a really tough job to making a living in but a valuable - we need more people working in conservation so go for it - good luck!

A:

When I first stumbled on the drinking water situation I immediately began conduction more research through Open Public Records Act requests and I wrote an assessment of the current deficiencies of my hometown in regards to the Lead and Copper rule. This assessment was reviewed by Dr. Marc Edwards and Dr. Yanna Lambrinidou, two Virginia Tech scientists who did a lot of work in Flint, Michigan. I sent this report to my local town council along with my mayor. In addition I contacted the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection along with EPA region 2 and notified them of these deficiencies.

I then began looking into other towns/cities and found that lead was a serious issue in Milltown, Newark, and Trenton. I have walked the streets of Newark passing out information about the elevated levels of lead in drinking water, and on August 16th I protested with gubernatorial candidate Seth Kaper-Dale outside the NJDEP's office over their lack of response to our lead crisis.

I have written and called numerous reporters along with Senator Booker's Office, and I will continue to contact our representatives and reporters no matter what the results of the election are.

Q:

What's an average workday like in that field?

A:

Your videos are a perfect midway between personality and straight up cooking/food porn. After wading through so many channels of over zealous personalities that talk for 6 months before cooking, And videos like Tasty.com, I found yours when looking for Philly Cheese Steaks! Hooked on your channel ever since.

So my question is, where did the inspiration to do torso only, to the point cooking with no kidding around and a great comedic tone? Was it a happy accident or something you specifically tried for?

And thank you for your channel! Can't wait to grab the book.

Q:

Was there ever a resolution with Dax's recliner in the middle of the living room?!

A:

Looking at how the spanish government has acted the last few days. . Do you think catalonia will be pressing harder for independence?

Q:

Hi Charlie! What is some of your "go to gear" that you take with you on every shoot?

A:

What's your stance on NJ & RGGI? How about nuclear subsidies for Hope Creek, Oyster Creek, and Salem?

Q:

Well, in August I broke a story with a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter that helped lead to renewed Wells Fargo hearings (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/31/business/wells-fargo-testimony.html).

Then, I worked all of last weekend writing policy reports and letters that Senators used to question the Wells Fargo CEO on Tuesday (https://www.brown.senate.gov/newsroom/press/release/brown-opening-statement-at-banking-committee-hearing-on-wells-fargo).

Then on Wednesday I put on a costume, made silly faces, and broke the internet. Hard to say how that averages out! But it's a great gig.

A:

Thanks man that's exactly what I've been going for!! And the very reason that I decided to show only my torso - I watched some cooking video about a burger that was 30 minutes long, and they didn't start cooking for 10 minutes. I decided to make a show that was focused solely on the food.

Thanks for watching!!

Q:

the current "resolution" is that its too heavy for me to lift and he wont move it so its STILL IN THE LIVING ROOM

A:

Yes, I hope they do it wisely

Q:

My Leica M240 and my iPhone 7. I can live without the rest if I have to! thanks

A:

I believe that putting a cap on carbon emissions from the power sector is an important step in reducing carbon emissions. However, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative doesn't address the environmental justice issue of where these carbon emissions occur which are often in lower socioeconomic areas. If elected I would put forward legislation similar to RGGI, however I would make sure that lower socioeconomic ares are not taking an unfair proportion of the pollution that would be emitted.

Q:

How did you stay so serious? I would be laughing and giggling and get kicked out. Huge respect dude //edit after 17 hours: wow I learned a lot about different sexualities/genders today. reddit is great

A:

Just back from Japan and there is a temporary exhibit on at the Studio Ghibli Museum about the art of food and animating eating in their movies. Is it a topic you've considered an episode on before? Also how much Food Wishes have you watched? Can definitely see a bit of an influence in your videos and a few tricks used seem to be similar

Q:

What's for dinner?

A:

I plan to visit Barcelona as a tourist from Wednesday to Sunday - is it safe?

Edit because ITT people assuming I’m American and sending unhelpful condescending responses: I’m not American and I’m not old enough to have ever witnessed such events in my own city (thankfully) so that’s why I don’t know what to expect and was apprehensive. To those that gave helpful and informative answers about the real state of events, bless you!

Also, TIL people are fairly biased against Americans asking questions, I didn’t know this until I read some of the responses.

Q:

Hey Mr. Living My Dream, have you ever gotten into underwater photography? Wildlife photography is easily my favorite hobby, and I really enjoyed the challenges I found when I took my camera underwater (especially, cold murky water). I always wondered what a real pro would think of the contrast between under and over water.

A:

Believe me, I have been cracking up these last few days at every photo and video. But in the moment, I was on a mission. That's why they call me a professional troublemaker.

Q:

Absolutely expect Ghibli foods in the near future!

Probably almost every one.

A:

banza pasta with tomatoes and EVOO

Q:

Spain is a very safe country, and it still be, enjoy your stay!

If I have one warning is to stay away from demostrations and check your wallet on the metro.

A:

Hey how are you? love underwater photography - i tend to specialise in fresh water as I'm not a very good diver. Exploring river sis awesome though and I love it - we need more people doing it - hope you are. and you can do it with a snorkel.

Q:

Will you be using the Monopoly Man getup for future public appearances (including as a subversive protest, but also, say, in court)? Relatedly, how do you recommend others to become as badass as you?

:) <3

A:

Would you ever consider doing more instructional videos on cooking? I love the format as it is now but it would be awesome to learn some more basic tips on cooking from you as well.

Q:

Hey Kristen, you've got amazing chemistry with all the late night hosts, and when you covered for Jimmy Kimmel earlier this year you killed. Just wondering if you've ever thought of hosting your own show?

Also what was your reaction when you found out about the twist at the end of season 1 of The Good Place?

A:

Did you get hassled by the police?

Q:

Hey Charlie, Whats in your travel bag? And Why?

A:

I wore this costume to call attention to S.J. Res. 47, a bill some Senate Republicans are trying to push through as a get-out-of-jail-free card for Equifax and Wells Fargo. Hopefully all this attention has scared them off from taking that vote, but if Mitch McConnell does another push, Monopoly Man will absolutely rise again!

Given the great support, I am also open to using Monopoly Man for other causes. And I am not limiting myself to this one character - creative activism takes many forms, and you need to fit the character to the protest.

Q:

That's the new show comin out next week! Basics with Babish!

A:

ive thought about a show...but jimmy is a good friend and i see how its ALOT more work than many think it is so im not quite ready for that yet

Q:

No, thankfully, but a few hours after I left the ballot a few citizens were sent to the hospital because the police charged :(

A:

My headphones - i cant travel without tons of stuff to watch on my phone - i'm a tv junky. and obviously a few cameras - iPhone, Leica and Canon or Sony - I juts bought a Rollieflex too

Q:

I loved how human a moment it was when Monopoly Man lost his/her monocle during the post-hearing interview. Your wit, confidence, your savviness showed as bright then as when you winked your railroad rich eyebrows directly into the camera. Class act, you!

A:

Is that going to be its own channel or on your original channel?

Q:

Just wanna say that the good place is forking amazing and I love it so much! My question is do you think Tahani X Elanor could happen?

A:

Do you think that the vote was realistic with only a forty three percent turn out, and do you think another referendum with a hopefully higher turnout is in the works?

Q:

I want to get closer to working with animals but most places like zoos or sanctuaries don't hire unless you have experience. What are some ways to get my foot through the door if I want to work with exotic animals? Would I have to be physically fit? (I have autoimmune health problems).

A:

It takes a lot of eye muscle to hold that thing in!

Q:

Going to be on the original channel, and accompanied by a biweekly livestream cookingalong on Twitch!

A:

I sure do. Im open to it.

Q:

I hope that a new referendum with democratic guarantees is on the works yes.

I see yesterday more as a statement of the people that we want to be able to vote, and not as a independence choice

A:

Hey thats a really tricky one for me - i have never really working with exotic animals in captive setting. I guess volunteering at animal rescue centres could be both really helpful to them and rewarding for you and then you'd get some real hands on experience to take elsewhere - good luck

Q:

Public Citizen called arbitration clauses a “get out of jail free” card for companies. What advice do you have for people who don't want to fall victim to these hidden clauses?

A:

What is the biggest project (cooking or otherwise) you want to tackle? What is stopping you from doing it?

Q:

What's your favourite cereal?

A:

Have you ever had the chance to interact with the Great Apes (excluding humans) and if so what is your most interesting story/observation?

Q:

Sadly, these ripoff clauses seem to be just about everywhere now. We even found one in the Pokemon GO terms and conditions last year! A few clauses have opt-out provisions, where you can write to the company (usually within 30 days) to waive the clauses, but that is rare.

Honestly, the most effective way to protect your right to sue big companies when they break the law is to push for federal protections like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's arbitration rule. That is why I am fighting S.J. Res. 47, the effort to repeal it.

A:

I've got a full-length series I'm developing for Netflix - really just waiting for it to be in the right place to pitch, and for my career to be in the right place to pounce!

Q:

cinnamon life

A:

Thanks for the question. I've only ever hung out with orang-utans but I very quickly fell in love with them. I didnt spend enough time with them to get any depth - only a few weeks. I remember one day though photographing an adult female who had a young baby called Tido - Tido was all over his mum and her elder son Thomas who was about seven was being ignored. He kept trying to climb on his mum but she shunned him and eventually moved away and Thomas sat with me looking very depressed and abandoned. I photographed him with his head in his hands. Poor wee guy! But he had to grow up and become an independent orang and his mum know it.

Q:

First, thank you for your activism. How long have you been doing this? Do you think this is effective or just entertaining?

A:

What's your favorite recipe in your new cookbook?

Q:

Can we see a sloth on The Good Place?

A:

Hey Charlie! I'm a huge fan of your work. I'm an aspiring photographer myself, and am in the "learn as much as possible" stage of my career. If I covered my own expenses, could I come volunteer as a production assistant on one of your shoots sometime?

Q:

Thank you all for the support! I don't really remember a time when I wasn't an activist. When I was 13, I staged my first action outside of a Disney store to protest their labor practices. I use a variety of tactics - both traditional and non-traditional - but I think activism is most effective when it is both entertaining and informative.

A:

Gotta be the same answer as my favorite episode: Timpano baby

Q:

we debated that this season actually and Mike Schur our creator is so thoughtful he actually asked me "would you be ok if a sloth was on the show? like, we dont want you to thinkwe are making fun of you or anything"

A:

Hey owninobrien -thanks for your question. The truth is that these days I tend to only use assistants who live in the countries where I work and rarely sue assonant otherwise. I get hundreds of requests every year but I cant really help these days. When I worked in TV I had full time assistants but I dont anymore - they are all much better than me these days! so sorry but worth asking other photographers. cheers!

Q:

What were the non-traditional tactics you used?

A:

what's up with food?

Q:

Is Kathryn Hahn as funny as she seems? I always loved her on Parks and Recreation.

A:

What action did a vulture or otter take that really surprised you (e.g., out of "character" or a demonstrating a trait you didn't know they had)?

Q:

I printed out little slips of paper that said, "This item was made in a sweatshop. Learn more at [LINK]" and stuck them in the pockets of their clothing. Then I stood outside the store handing out fliers. No costumes on that one though!

A:

I know right it's like get in my mouth already, food

Q:

Kathryn is hilarious and kind. shes truly inspiring all the time. always has a smile on her face.

A:

I once watched a lappet faced vulture break off a small twig from a bush and give it to his partner - it was very touching and amazing to watch such a huge ugly bird being so generous and sensitive.

Q:

Was there coverage of that? Any articles or photos?

A:

Any suggestions on a chefs knife? Outside of that, what's the one thing that everyone should own in a kitchen but most don't?

Q:

The Good Place is so good, man. But, when are you finally going to guest star on iZombie? Voicework doesn't count!

A:

Love your work about otters - they truly are amazing animals. Best otter-related experience so far ?

Q:

Nope, it was just an intrepid 13-year-old kid that got kicked out of the mall within about ten minutes!

A:

I love Wusthof Ikon Classic - and while that can be prohibitively expensive, Wusthof just came out with their "Pro" line that is super-affordable - cheaper even than my previous budget recommendation, the Victorionox Fibrox line!

EDIT: Didn't finish the question - a big fuck-off cutting board. Most people get those shitty 3-packs from IKEA, and they're totally useless. Get a gigantic cutting board, preferably wood, but OXO makes a great one for $20!

Q:

i wish! in truth they shoot in vancouver so its hard for me to travel there with kids and all

A:

Swimming with them in florida - hands down the best wildlife experience I've ever had in my life. thanks!

Q:

How much practicing did your mastery of the monocle take? Seems like it'd be kind of hard to keep in, but you handled it like a right old timey pro.

A:

Hey Andrew! I just wanted to say first that your show really made start cooking again after i lost my motivation a few months ago so thanks! My question is, How did you figure out that cooking was your true calling? Thanks

Q:

Oh man, I just discovered The Good Place on Netflix and binged it all in one go. Love it!

What would would be in your own personal Bad Place? Mine would be a wardrobe full of shirts and blouses with one missing button.

A:

I'm a budding young photography graduate, have you got any tips for breaking into the industry? And can I please please come and have work experience with you?

Q:

I definitely struggled with it a bit. But the prop I had was pretty lightweight, so it wasn't that hard to hold in. You just need to exercise those eye muscles!

A:

Hey man that's great to hear, keep it up!!

Hah actually I went to film school - didn't really realize that till last year! Happened quite on accident! But I knew that food/film were my true calling(s) back in 9th grade when I made my first video project to get out of writing an essay, and when I cooked my first meal for a date and it came out horribly.

Q:

Mine would be Zero caffine, Zero naps, and constantly hearing 2 songs play at the same time.

A:

I'm sorry but I cant do any work experience! however my advice - be different. There are millions of people shooting the same stuff in the same way - stand back reconsider your subject and the way you approach it and do what everyone else isn't doing - then you make your own path and find your own voice as a photographer - good luck

Q:

Any other direct actions planned? Also, the Monopoly man doesn't have a monocle and I'm interested as to whether you knew that but decided to go with the monocle anyway because so many people think he does or if it's just a good prop. I have to admit, you pulling out the monocle was quite possibly the funniest thing I've seen in months.

A:

How's the progress on cracking the good burger sauce going?

Q:

Jesus, I hadn't even contemplated the evil that would be a nap ban.

A:

I read that NG photographers take hundreds of pictures and only get selected one or two. Is that true? How long do you usually have to wait at a place to get the perfect picture sometimes?

Q:

Thanks for asking! I have been getting so many comments about the monocle. When planning the outfit, I used google images of Rich Uncle Pennybags as reference. Most of the images didn't have a monocle, but a few did, and I knew it would make a great prop.

Also, my sister gave me a monocle as a gag gift when I graduated from law school, so I HAD to use it.

A:

Bad - he boils pickles in ketchup!

Q:

RIGHT????

A:

No its not true - we take thousands of photos and only get one selected! People often say - well if you take that many surely you'll get some good ones. Well the truth is I dont care how many I take to get the good ones I just want the good ones. It doesn't actually work out either that if you shoot tons you'll get good ones. It also depends on what you're shooting. Sometimes I'll take 20 photos on a shoot and others times thousands - i took 5000 photos of chickens a few weeks ago over a weekend - i had to to get the action I needed and its only by doing that that we got the shot the magazine needed. Anyway hope that helps.

Q:

In the spirit of social activism, I just wrote a petition for Hasbro to retcon the Monopoly Guy to add a monocle.

A:

How much has your life changed since that video of you with a head full of hair, slicing fruit?

Q:

Besides Settlers of Catan, what other board games are you playing?

A:

You, sir, are the true hero.

Q:

So goddamn much haha

Fellas, if you're losing your hair, grow a pair and chop it all off.

EDIT: and happy cakeday!

A:

we are too obsessed with catan to try anything else at the moment but i would like to try Pandemic or ticket to ride

Q:

Have you had many news organizations or people reaching out to you after the fact? How widely were you recognized by people who knew you?

A:

What’s in the book that isn’t on YouTube?

Q:

Hi Kristen! When you were dubbing Anna in Frozen, did you already know how big hit it will become?

A:

I have been doing non-stop press since Wednesday! The amount of attention has been overwhelming, but I am very happy that I seem to have made this very rough week easier for some folks. And of course I am excited that people are paying attention to S.J. Res. 47 and supporting the CFPB arbitration rule.

Strangely enough, many folks who know me personally did not recognize me in costume. Every day, I get several texts from people who just figured out it was me! I imagine some folks will only find out years from now.

Q:

Lots! The book has a bunch of recipes that are more tributes to the films rather than direct adaptations (eg, French Toast Sticks from Kramer vs. Kramer) - but also has many recipes lifted straight from the show!

A:

no- i mean i knew it was special- but the public temperature has to be right on to make a movie succeed so you never can really know if it will be a "hit"

Q:

Did you learn to tie a bow tie only for this appearance?

A:

what dish wasn't worth the time it took to make?

Q:

What attracted you to The Good Place? Congratuwelldone on the show's success! :~)

A:

Yes, and I am terrible at it.

Q:

Good lord so many - the one that stands out is this very week's episode actually, Cailles en Sarchophage - there are better uses for truffles and foie gras!

A:

mike schur

Q:

Do you think you will inspire more monopoly men to start making appearances?

A:

Hey Babish, Huge fan of yours, what’s one thing about cooking you wish more people were aware of ?

Q:

Do you play video games? If so, what are some of your favorite games?

A:

I certainly hope so! I posted a how-to guide with links to all the accessories I used here: https://queeronclearance.tumblr.com/post/166109873133/monopoly-man-top-hat-nj-novelty-7-on-amazon

(Yes, I have a queer fashion blog)

Q:

It can get you laid way easier than playing the guitar.

Kidding - that, even when it's indulgent, it's way healthier than eating microwaved crap like Lean Pockets and the like. There are some deep misconceptions about what is healthy and what isn't in the modern food arena, and I hope to one day be one of the voices that helps inform the public!

And thank you!!

A:

I havnt played in a VERY long time but i used to LOVE 007 and Mario cart on N64. that was my sweet spot. Now im very into board games

Q:

Is getting the utility companies really worth it?

A:

Are there any cooking shows or food shows that you enjoy watching? Whether they be on TV or YouTube?

Q:

There was a massive picture of your on the side of my bus, and I was wondering - have you ever seen an advert with your face on it in public, and how did that make you feel?

A:

Nah. If you're a capitalist, serving the public is for suckers.

Q:

Oh lord yes - on YouTube, Chef John, Gordon Ramsay, Brad Leone (BA), You Suck at Cooking

On TV, Alton Brown, Jacques Pepin, Anthony Bourdain

A:

super wierd. i dont even like mirrors that much and a larger than life billboard makes me wanna puke

Q:

Is Cause-play an activist twist on cosplay?

A:

Is basics with babish still happening?

Q:

Is Jameela Jamil that gorgeous in real life?

A:

Yes! Someone informed me of this term yesterday, and I think it is brilliant.

Q:

Next week baby!

A:

yes! she is stunning. a total knockout :)

Q:

Were you worried that this “stunt” would distract from the hearing and Equifax to be become a secondary thought?

A:

More of a personal question feel free to not answer it, we all know balding is a tough thing to go through, how did you deal with yours?

Q:

Follow up to this guy's question... What gives on only giving us 5 seconds of version #218?

A:

That was definitely on my mind. I strategically tried to be most entertaining during the questions I thought were most important, in hopes that if I made it onto news shows, people would hear those questions and answers.

Fortunately, the coverage so far has been surprisingly focused on the issues! Especially my efforts around S.J. Res. 47 and the CFPB arbitration rule. So the activism was actually far more effective than I'd hoped at drawing attention to Equifax and Wells Fargo's misdeeds.

Q:

Chopped it all off and stopped giving a fuck. When you're balding, people only see how afraid you are of your own hairline. I get way more dates now than when I had hair and was scared I was losing it.

A:

hmmm i dont rememebr 218- weve have over 800!

Q:

Is there any way to bold these companies liable in criminal court since forced arbitration keeps them out of civil court?

A:

Not to get personal but don't you wear a ring in a lot of your videos?

Q:

Hey Kristen. One quick question... if you and Dax were offered a spot on lip sync battle would you guys do it?

A:

Unfortunately, private citizens cannot bring criminal claims. Only state and federal prosecutors can charge people with crimes.

I would love to see more prosecutions of corporate crime. But as it stands now, few charges are ever brought and they mostly result in small fines for the company rather than any prison time for the executives that broke the law. If corporations are people, the rest of us are second-class citizens in comparison.

Q:

Hey man get personal, I ain't mind - I got divorced last year

A:

i think the show is amazing but it takes 8 hours to shoot and im pretty lazy

Q:

How long did it take you to grow that mustache?

A:

Where in Harlem do you do your food shopping for the show? You get some pretty unique ingredients.

Q:

Eleanerd here. If The Good Place were on HBO, what would you do differently?

A:

Not nearly as long as my personal information will be at risk because of the Equifax data breach.

Q:

I have to go all over for the unique stuff! But happily they just opened a Whole Foods in my area, so that helps!!

A:

OMG I LOVE ELANERD

Q:

Piggybacking a bit. When news of the breach broke, everything was saying 145 million (or whatever the number was) people, then they would parrot "Which is about half of the country". My immediate thought was, after factoring minors and people without a credit report (for reasons other than age), only about half the population has a credit report. I guess I am suggesting that everyone who has a credit report got their info stolen, the "half the population" mantra was the most reassuring way they could word "All records".

A:

Hey Oliver. This isn't a food related question but I was wondering if maybe we could get a close up of your tattoos and maybe some backstories ? love your videos. thanks!

Q:

Hi Kristen, I think you are really funny in The Good Place, I binged the first season in a weekend and caught up to the episodes in season 2.

My question is, what is your favourite vegetarian or vegan food? Sincerely, a fan 😊

A:

I have heard estimates that it was about 3/4 of the adult population, so very close. This is why we need serious Congressional action and agency oversight, not some mumbled apologies from Equifax executives.

Q:

Hah idk about close ups, but the explanation of my tattoos is here on my website!

A:

Im really into peas- in any form. fresh, frozen, stirfried, you name it. they are a great source of everything a veg needs

Q:

What would you do if you had a get-out-of-jail-free card?

A:

Has there ever been anything you’ve attempted to make that has made you consider giving up cooking?

I used to want to be a chef until I tried making a gingerbread house. That thing fell apart almost as quickly as my dreams.

Q:

Hey Kristen, I recently saw the video of your fellow on-set actors reacting to the major S1 reveal. Their simultaneous gasps were hilarious to witness.

My question is, when did you find out about the reveal and, how did you handle it once you found out the truth?

A:

If I had one months ago, I would have crashed the inauguration in character.

Q:

Hah if that Timpano didn't work out? If it blew up, leaked, wasn't cooked through? I'd have given up the whole show in an instant. So I'm happy it turned out.

A:

i learned about it before i signed onto the show. before the pilot was even written. it was exciting and guilt inducing to keep that secret from my friends the whole season?

Q:

Are you friends with Lord Buckethead?

A:

It seems music is always playing while you cook. What is your favorite jam?

Q:

Is the la-z boy still in the middle of your family room?

A:

Someone send Lord Buckethead to a protest, and we can get acquainted.

Q:

I either have Frasier/Star Trek TNG/Always Sunny/MST3K going in the background while cooking, or: Vulfpeck/Young Thug/Ariel Pink

A:

You bet

Q:

Serious question: are you paid by non profits or is this on your free time? Do you have a full time career? I would like to get into activism but it's hard when you work a 9-5.

A:

You have collaborated with other YouTube channels recently, are there any other people (YouTube or celebrity personalities) that you would like to work with?

Q:

What would you do if life handed you some lemons?

A:

This particular stunt was for my day job, as a Campaign Manager working to support the CFPB arbitration rule. But I also do organizing in my free time on other issues. It is very hard to balance work and activism, and jobs in this area are scarce and low-paying.

But that is one reason why I push for entertaining and creative activism! I hope folks can turn this kind of fun protest into a hobby that energizes us rather than tires us out.

Q:

I'm desperate to work with You Suck at Cooking but he's a busy busy man! And utterly anonymous!

A:

squeeze em- and DRINK UP BABY

Q:

1) What kind of laws you wish more people knew about that can help them financially for the future?

2) What can be done by everyone to help the process to start scrapping the social security card and getting a identification similar to the UK?

3) This is a really huge deal and seems like everyone is brushing it aside and letting people get away with this huge leak; What is currently being done to help mitigate this damage in the long foreseeable future?

A:

Hello! My boyfriend and I are huge fans! Have you considered putting out merch? Like T-shirt’s and hoodies and maybe even rubber spatulas? I’d buy the shit out of your merch, just saying!

Q:

is it normal to get Little Mary Sunshine stuck in my head at odd hours?

A:

These are great questions, but a bit outside my wheelhouse. I focus more on corporate accountability and access to the court system than credit reporting reform - hence my focus on S.J. Res. 47.

But I would check out my colleagues' work at the National Consumer Law Center and the Consumer Federation of America. They have been very active on these issues!

From what I glean though, this is a seriously endemic problem, and we need Congressional action to actually remedy the catastrophic damage done in this breach. So, again, call your Senators!

Q:

Keep an eye out! Definitely going to be dropping more and more product in the near future!

EDIT: and thank you!

A:

VERY Normal. used to happen to me all the time, i even made shirts for the crew that said "YOURE LOVED BY MARY LANE" and thanks to your reminding me, it will now be in my head all day

Q:

Was it actual money in the bag? Also did you have any trouble with security?

A:

Stumbled into you channel with the Prison Sauce Episode.

So far I've tried making Pasta Aioli, oven style Freddie's Ribs (came out amazing and I finally got a proper smoker for round two) going to do Dave's Carbonara later today for work meals.

A good amount of wit, smooth voice, a taste for good drinks and food and I've become hooked on your channel.

My question to you: propane or charcoal?

Q:

Hi Kirsten,

Can we work on getting some more nudity into the good place? or at least get Jason's shirt off every now and then? asking for . . . a friend?

A:

It was not real money. Those were oversized hundred dollar bills my colleagues printed for their Forgo Wells activism around the Wells Fargo hearing, which took place on Tuesday. I did not have trouble going through security, though many Senate staffers gave me some odd looks!

Q:

Thanks very much!!

Much as I love Hank Hill, I gotta go charcoal

A:

im on it

Q:

cause-played

Please tell me this is a thing. Cosplaying for a cause. Is this a movement or are you the first?

A:

You have wonderful forearms (partial focal point of the show).. Do you do any exercises to combat all the large meals you make for the show? Do you meal prep?

Q:

Can Eleanor/Tahani be endgame?

A:

Someone informed me of this term last night! I did not coin it, but I think it is brilliant. I would honored to help create a movement of cause-players.

Q:

Why thank you - I have two pull-up bars stationed around the apartment haha, and I jog a lil 5K at least 3x/week.

I don't really have time to meal prep unfortunately! It's one of the few things I miss about having a full-time job.

A:

YERP

Q:

Have you ever considered narration? I'm blind amd love listeniing to your voice I'd totally pay to hear you read audiobooks.

A:

What's it like producing films with your husband?

Q:

New podcast coming very soon, Bedtime with Babish, where I read short stories and poetry!

A:

super fun

Q:

You referenced Mary Berry and Hollywood in one of your vids, you about that GBBO life?

A:

Do you often find yourself wonder if your husband and Ryan Hansen were separated at birth?

Q:

Anytime I feel like I need a hug, I just throw on GBBO

A:

yes, yes i do

Q:

Hey Babish, love your work!

My question is: Can I call you Babs?

A:

What show would you love to guest star on?

Q:

Fuckin, yeah dude

A:

GOT !!

Q:

Hey! The wife and I are big fans.

Do you have a graveyard of over-requested meals that you think just won't make good episodes or are just too basic?

Any requests you are afraid are too intricate or beyond your ability?

A:

Oh wow, I made it early to your AMA! Hi Kristen! I’m a huge fan, ever since your Lucy days in Assassin’s Creed. Loving The Good Place (foreshadowing in the first season was amazing!) and can’t wait for the episode coming out soon!

My questions:

  • It seems like everyone has such great chemistry in The Good Place. What are some of the most silly outtakes that’s happpened?

  • Is there such a thing as too many sloths? If yes, how many is too many?

P.S. Anna is my favourite Disney princess.

Q:

Hey thanks!

And yes to both - I actually shot one that turned out to be too simple/easy, no matter how much I tried to jazz it up: jam and toast from Wallace and Gromit. Still did a crossover episode with William Osman!

Too hard - definitely the opening scene from Eat Drink Man Woman! Literally anything from that scene! I'll make that inflated duck one day though.

A:

LOTS of weird dancing from William Jackson Harper on the Goop Place. Ill post some videos on my instagram for ya. NEVER TOO MANY SLOTHS

Q:

Do you prefer making Main courses or desserts?

A:

Hi Mrs. Bell, I'm a huge fan of yours! Can I ask, what is the best thing a director can do for you on set? Thank you! :~)

Q:

Main courses, mainly because I suck at baking, which is usually involved in desserts!

A:

be blunt! i love clear direction. DO this, DONT do that. quick and efficient.

Q:

Hey, I love the quality of your content! I was wondering if there was any particular method you use to determine which dish you make next?

A:

Hi Kristen!!! I am in LOVE with you and with the Good Place. I don't think a show has ever hurt my brain as much as this one does. Can't wait for the new episode!!My question for you is, what is the funnest thing about working with Ted Danson?

edit: here's a relevant meme that made me laugh. https://twitter.com/JoshKurp/status/914941907234586624

Q:

Hah it is really by the seat of my pants - like I just realized this morning that I missed the season premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm, so guess what the fuck next week's episode is gonna be.

A:

watching him giggle when he breaks character, which is often

Q:

Would it be possible to do more grill based recipes a lá the House of Cards episode?

A:

If you could steal a smooch from any guy in Hollywood who would it be?

Q:

Doing Katz's Pastrami from When Harry Met Sally in the very near future - going to need to utilize my buddy's smoker again!

A:

currently? hasan minhaj

Q:

Are there any cancelled babish episodes we're unaware of?

A:

Do you relate to Anna in any way?

Q:

Just my Frasier episode :( and my Lovers' Delight episode is being copyright disputed right now, hopefully that'll be back up soon

A:

every single way. I helped shape who she was. Leading with her heart alwaya, goofy and clumsy but unafraid to take a challenge

Q:

hey Andrew. My question is : how do you get your dulcet tones so silky smooth? They spread metaphorical honey on my burnt toast on a weekly basis.

A:

How do you deal with your mental health when you are so busy?

Q:

Gaww thanks - I admit I use an equalizer to make it sound a lil richer, but other than that, just good luck I suppose!

A:

working out, checking in, self care

Q:

Have you ever had trouble keeping in shape with all those wonderful foods around you?

A:

Hi Kristen, is Annie really your middle name? ILY

Q:

Hah I do my best to eat clean and exercise every day of the week that I'm not shooting the show :P

A:

yes, and i was called annie until i was 16

Q:

Hey Andrew! My roommate and I are big fans, and since we moved into our new dorm with a kitchen we've made a bunch of your recipes.

As fellow NYC residents, what's the most unique/notable dish you've found here?

A:

What would be your Bad Place torture?

Also, what advice would you give to someone who identifies with Chidi a little bit too much?

Thanks Kristen! The Good Place is my favorite show on tv by far!

Q:

Thanks dude!

One of my favorites is Gnocco Fritto at Via Emilia - it's a simple enough Italian fritter served with charcuterie - but something about it, I don't know, it's fucking fabulous. And it's the only place you can get it in the city as far as I know!

A:

No coffee, no naps

Q:

How do you take your garbage plate and whats your favourite place to get one?

A:

Hi Kristen! Other than Crosby who is your favorite parenthood character?

Q:

White hots, hot sauce, Henrietta Hots

A:

Mae whitman as amber. Or truthfully, Mae Whitman as Mae Whitman. shes the greatest light bulb we have

Q:

What helps you when you are frustrated and in a creative block? I'm in a bad writers block and I'm trying to break it

A:

Hi Kristen!

Are there any roles you've turned down that you wish you hadn't, or vice versa? Any upcoming projects you can tell us about?

Q:

Weed.

Kidding - sort of - but seriously, meditation and a good night's sleep. Laying off the booze for a few days. Getting rid of some of that fog.

A:

real talk: ive pretty much taken every role ive ever gotten :) i just finished a movie for Netflix called "like Father" out next year- and bad moms 2 will be out in NOV

Q:

Other than J. Kenji López-Alt, who are some chefs that inspire you?

A:

How often do you visit the mitten and where are your favorite place to go while your here?

Q:

Chef John for sure, Gordon Ramsay, Alton Brown, Brad Leone!

A:

about once a year and we love getting up to the lakes

Q:

Hey Andrew! Thanks for doing an AMA on top of your already pretty great engagement on your subreddit.

Probably the most interesting question I can think of is what recipes using fictional ingredients do you most want to try, and what might you use instead of the fantasy components?

A:

Do you want to build a snowman?

Q:

No problem bro!

Definitely Harry Potter foods - they all sound so tempting, and so practically out of reach!

A:

always

Q:

When are we getting the Bedtime with Babish episode where you read us Go the Fuck to Sleep?

A:

Hi, thank you so much for doing this! I saw the video you took (Spoilers) of the cast's reation to the amazing twist at the end of season one of the Good Place. My question is, what was your reaction when you were told about it? Were you just as surprised?

Q:

Soon as I get the rights to it haha

A:

i was told before the pilot was even written so i kept the secret the whole time!

Q:

Any plans to branch out to do recipes that aren't in movies/shows?

A:

Kristen Bell. You beautiful son a bitch. You're so damn awesome!

If Veronica Mars and Jeannie Van Der Hooven were in a fight to the death, who would win?

Q:

Absolutely - new show coming out, Basics with Babish, is going to be a purely instructional series, accompanied by a biweekly livestream cookalong!

A:

WOOF. this is a tough one. i think we'd have to dig two graves

Q:

Hi, I've watched all your episodes ever since I first saw your szechuan sauce episode posted here on Reddit, love your work.

This is more a request than a question, but would you ever try to recreate cheesy blasters from 30 rock?

A:

Hey! Huge fan of House of Lies. What is it like working with Don Cheadle?

Q:

Thanks!

Oh that is totally happening soon.

A:

don cheadle is a king. hes smart funny and a hell of a leader. and a great friend. he has no bad qualities which is very annoying

Q:

What's a cuisine or cooking style you wish you knew more about?

A:

What is the thing you are most grateful about?

Q:

The entirety of SE Asia - I have very little grasp of it and I wish I knew more about it/could cook it better!

A:

my ability to maintain an optimistic attitude

Q:

Have you ever considered having Action Bronson on the show?

A:

Is there anything quirky that you ask for when on a tv or movie set from kraft services or in your trailer?

Q:

Considered, hoped, wished for.

A:

nope, im just happy i get a trailer
