Gotta run - thanks for all the questions!
Hey All! I’m Jessie, a Cross Country Skier and I race all winter on the World Cup - I am gearing up for another Winter Olympic Games -- all races from sprints to 30 kilometers! I have 4 World Championship medals, was part of the 2014 Winter Olympic team and am gearing up for another Olympic games.
I began skiing at age 3 and was part of the first-ever U.S. team to [win](https://www.teamusa.org/us-ski-and-snowboard/athletes/Jessie-Diggins

Would you say the rise of far right views are directly tied to the mass immigration around eastern Europe? - Do you think they have a legitimate chance of winning?
Hey Mr. Giacchino!
I love your work, especially on films like the Incredibles, Star Trek, and Planet of the Apes, but the one score I love most from you is one that I don’t think gets nearly enough appreciation – that being your score for Jupiter Ascending.
I’m curious what the process of writing that was like, since from what I understand you wrote a good chunk of it before shooting had even started at the request of the Wachowskis. Was it more challenging? Less? Just different? What were you given to go on when it came to developing a tone and themes? How much of your original score made it into the film, and is there a chance of the unused stuff getting a release?
What was the process of being initially detained? Did the FBI just knock on your door while you were home and said you were under arrest?
How many times have you been arrested and what happened?
What is the best Portable Vacuum to have in the car? I do Lyft and Uber and it would be nice to have something small in the trunk.
did Josh Widdicombe give you your wedding ring back?
Hi Jessie, big fan from Norway here!
- What’s your favorite interval workout?
- Do you have any rituals or routines to mentally prepare for a race?
- What do you think it will take to make cross-country skiing as big in the U.S. as it is over here?
Best of luck with your season and the Olympics!
The immigration crisis has certainly been a factor, especially when thousands of people crossed the hungarian border in 2015, causing panic amongst the population. But the far right has been on the rise for a number of years, even before that, benefiting also form economic hardship, and governments inability to address major issues inHungary or other neighbouring countries. Regarding the far right in Hungary, the main far right party, Jobbik had already been very successful in 2010, with 17% votes, and it got 20% of votes in 2014. They've watered down their discourse, to better compete with ruling Fidesz. But the latter has a very strong grip on the country, wether it concerns econmic power, institutions, media, and it's unlikely that it would lose its position for the enxt election, allthemore that it has been capitalising on far right ideology as well..
This was a really interesting project for me because the Wachowskis asked me to write the music before they started shooting. They didn't give me a script they gave me place descriptions, character descriptions and I basically wrote six suites based on their notes. It was very freeing because I wasn't locked to picture. Then after they shot the film we had to go back and add things here and there.
Well, the FBI agent and my local sheriff did not press charges. However, the FBI agent did have to report his findings to the Ohio sheriff. Then, they pressed charges and I was arrested at work. Taken to jail and waited 27 days for extradition.
You might like Dyson's V7 or V8 cordless stick vacs. They're pretty good for that kind of thing.
Hi! I love long zone 3 workouts because it's a great chance to really improve my technique while going hard. So, something like 5 x 10 minutes zone 3 with 3-4 minutes rest in between each one. Before each race, I put sparkles on my cheeks to remind myself that I do this because I love to ski and that when I'm having fun, I race my fastest! I think we need a World Cup in the US to help fans connect with the sport, and now with so many athletes sharing their life on social media fans can really connect and follow their favorite athletes - which makes them want to see the races even more!
What was the moment when you realized "Oh man, this might not be considered a prank and I may be in deeper trouble than I initially thought?"
What's with the mannequin legs in the garden?
What are your thoughts on Roombas??
And have you ever had to fix one?
Does it freak you out a bit that all these randoms are so informed about your work, and can ask very specific questions?
There wasn't much time to be intimidated - I had only 4 1/2 weeks to write the score - but I've loved star wars since I was a kid so ultimately it was just a lot of fun even though the schedule was crazy!
The minute the voice on the other end of the phone claimed to be an FBI agent.
They were left over from a TV project......you can't chuck legs away
I think they're okay for doing light cleaning throughout the week, between regular deep vacuuming (assuming carpeting). I think Neato and Miele robots are better systems than Roomba.
I worked on an early model Roomba and it felt like a crap product. They've since made their machines into modular systems that the consumer can diagnose and replace components easily, so I don't see them come into the shop so much.
Walking into opening ceremonies! It's such an adrenaline rush - the lights, the cheering, the noise. For me, that's the moment I felt like I had finally made the Olympic team!
Do you still browse 4chan or have you sworn off that website since getting arrested?
I'm sure you've had a lot of time to think about what caused you to threaten that
What was one project that you regretting starting because it got too dangerous, costly, etc., but had to finish anyways? Thanks!
I've already worked on my fav - Space Mountain.
Say hi to your fiancee and have a great wedding!!
I have sworn off the website. It hasn't even touched my address bar. It's like a PTSD thing for me now.
The fire tornado just WOULD NOT WORK but turns out it was just the weather so glad I persevered but was a tough, cold January!
I hope it serves you well for a good, long time.
It gives me a different angle on life. It's like I'm running two cameras at all times.
Haha I love Canmore because I have a lot of friends there and it's close(ish) to home! My warmup playlist involves a lot of upbeat pop like Taylor Swift, SIA and right now "Feel it Still" by Portugal the Man. And 100 duck sized Northugs would be hilarious.
How is your relationship with your neighbours?
How do you suggest cleaning out the hose? I have a vacuum with an accordian hose and a wife who routinely vacuums up wet things that should have been cleaned up by other methods.
For everyone that inevitably tells me to fix the wife problem, I have tried, and that would still leave me with my dirty hose that had build up from when it got wet then was used on more dry things.
How does your Dad feel about you being back in America with your Mum?
which foods are easiest to process during an intense sprint?
Hi, it's Rita. Far-right is getting more popular not only in Germany and Hungary, but in a lot of European countries...Austria, France, Netherlands, Poland, just to mention some. Europeans are anxious about their future, the migrant crisis, complex issues that are not easy to solve or communicate. Far-right parties offer direct and simple answers to those fears. Rita,Euronews
I had a great Uncle, Peter Fortunato, who fought in WWII, and he told us so many stories. I knew that his stories represented that entire generation of people who went and fought that war. He was my inspiration.
To work as hard as I can to be the great person I know I can be. My life was a wreck when I was doing all that stuff. I was overeating, drinking everyday, and I dropped out of school...
Soak it in vinegar overnight, then rinse it out with just water with a hose sprayer or something. Set it out in the sun to dry completely.
I eat cliff shot blocks - so, basically just simple sugar! I also like peanut butter banana sandwiches in between the qualifier and the heats.
Why in God’s name do they still sell that stupid carpet powder stuff ? Every vacuum I’ve ever cleaned that saw it was just clogged with that crap.
In your early career, what was the worst gig you ever did?
Yes! That usually means it either doesn't NEED music or the director is feeling insecure about what he has and is trying to "save" it with your score!
It's helped me because I do not want to be anything like the people there. Selling drugs, beating women, hurting kids. It's a terrible thing. I want to be the exact opposite. I want to be a clean, sober guy, an amazing husband and a family of my own someday.
I'm very aware of this and feel I should make a German themed Colin fart video
I died on my arse in Essex when i first started. They didn't even clap when I finished.
Haha I always have to bet on myself!
What was prison life like with people who knew you were in for threatening to shoot up a school?
HOW THE HELL HAVE YOU NOT DIED, YET?
What are your thoughts on Simplicity? (Still good? Maintenance issues to be aware of? etc.) I got a Simplicity canister more than ten years ago, and love it. I think the only thing I've replaced on it was the hose.
How does it feel to be a rich man's Nish Kumar?
I really loved Oceanic Six which was a theme for all the characters.
I was called Osama a lot and they made a ton of jokes my way.
Simplicity is a very good brand. You might not know that Simplicity is Riccar's sister company and the two brand's vacuums are almost identical.
Honestly, the World Cup can change so much weekend to weekend! But my teammate Andy Newell just had a birthday today so he's feeling really happy and looks fast!
Who makes the good (see; not too f'ing expensive) shampoo vacuum cleaner?
Here in England, you can rent a "Rug Doctor" but no idea if they are any good or not.
What questions do you wish you were asked more often?
Which is more annoying to listen to: cheeky remarks about your eye, your maths teaching career, or your vegan diet?
Hi Jessie, race hard this winter! Do you feel at this point that you are equally competitive in both classic and skate? Will that factor into the choices you make about what races to focus on at the Olympics? Thanks for being a great rep for MN.
I don't recommend any consumer level shampooers. Hiring a professional with heated extraction is ideal, renting is better than nothing.
Thanks! I'm always working to improve in both techniques, but I feel that my classic is slowly getting there! I'm focusing on the skate-heavy races at the Olympics simply because I love the team events so much and I feel that's the best way I can help my team.
Hi, Mr. Giacchino!
I have to say that the Incredibles soundtrack is probably my favorite selection from you (though it's hard to really pick a favorite), but as a huge James Bond fan, I can't help but hear the various Bond-esque inspiration within the soundtrack. How did you decide to take that route, and if MGM/EON ever approached you for a Bond soundtrack, would you do it?
What was the most difficult aspect about adjusting to prison life?
What did you do with your time?
What do you use the bunker for? And how does it smell afterwards?
We've been pretty happy with Bissel's Big Green Clean Machine, but it's not as good as paying for heated extraction. I think a home unit is great to have for pet stains and kid stains when paying for professional cleaning every time is impractical.
What is your honest opinion on Dara O Brien from your time on Mock The Week?
Hey Jessie! Big fan from Norway here! One of the most exiting races i've ever seen was the 10k in Falun 2015, congrats on the silver! Good luck this weekend at Lillehammer and in the Olympics! Anyways, my question is how is it for you to spend the entire winter every year here in Europe? Do you wish for eventually having more FIS races in USA?
Director Brad Bird really wanted an old school Jazz orchestra vibe so it all started with that. I feel like the Incredibles IS my James Bond score so I'm good!
The most difficult thing is adjusting to zero privacy and being treated less than human by guards and other staff.
Rick uses it as a band practice room, I watch the formula 1 down there and it's a store for my inventions. It doesn't smell and has never got damp! #amazing
I agree. At least the Big Green is a decent machine. Just ALWAYS do a full rinse run after the shampoo run.
Thanks! It can be hard to be traveling the entire winter since I'm away from home and I miss my family. But, it's also really exciting to get the chance to see so many countries and meet so many new people! The best way to stay happy is to be with a team that has great chemistry. We are like a family and look out for each other! And yes, I would LOVE to have a WC in the USA!
Which song(s) do you listen to on your Bose headphones/speaker to get amped up for your races?
Thanks! I hadn't seen that before. I chuckled audibly.
Year 9 Friday Period 5 was worse than any comedy club.
I love anything with a good dance beat that's happy! Right now, "Feel it Still" by Portugal the Man and "The Greatest" by Sia make me really happy!
Vanilla or Chocolate? p.s. See you at band practice Alex
So, how do your friends and family view you? I'm sure it'll be a fun topic to bring up around the holidays..
Do you want your son to follow in your footsteps or would you rather he did something a little safer?
I work as a repair technician for a goodwill type organization in Europe, my job is to test and repair pretty much everything in your kitchen/living room. I pretty much learn on the job with some courses on the side, so I have a lot to learn. Vacuum cleaners come in all the time, and usually the 'fixes' we do is simply cleaning out the filters and replacing a bag if needed. If there's an actual defect chances are it is too time-intensive to fix, as we do need to make 'some' money.
Have any general tips that could help me salvage more of them rather than forfeiting them to recycling?
Hey Romesh, my partner at the time and I followed you and Seann Walsh through Windsor to find a gig you were doing once.
What's the oddest fan interaction you've had?
I am food obsessed and dream about being a cross country skier so I can eat whatever I want. Really though, how many calories would you say you burn in your average training while skiing? Good luck.
Chocolate Chip! Family Band Practice is ONE HOUR!!! BE HERE!!
They know I would never truly hurt anyone. But they understand I was being a drunk douche and watching me throw my life away. I am very lucky for a shot at redemption.
If he is interested in what I'm doing, but I won't push him into it!
Man, I don't know what your margins are like, but I can tell you that Youtube is a great recourse for repair tips. I go there when I've got a real odd ball that even my veteran techs in the company are stumped on.
Once a couple of pricks followed me through Windsor.
In a long training session, or intervals, I probably go through around 1600 calories. That's a lot of granola bars! :)
oh oh! please answer! ive been a follower of your work since jurassic park the lost world on playstation! when you scored jurassic world did you sneak some of that score into the raptor chase scene? also medal of honor and underground rocked!
Do you have a job now? What is it? How are you getting back on your feet?
Love your show. Do you have any background in engineering?
I have 3 large dogs and 2 cats. What floor cleaning device do you suggest? I've murdered three different vacuums and am in need of advice.
I recently saw your stand up sometime last year in Southend at the Cliffs Pavillion. The show was great but what really stood out for me, and I wonder if you remember it was the incident with the fly that would not leave you alone on stage, and your handling of it was to a comedic point absolutely perfect.
My question for you is of all your stand up gigs you've done, except for 'the fly' what has been your favourite bit of improvised comedy, based on something an audience member said or something that happened on stage where you thought about it afterwards thinking 'I fucking killed that bit, couldn't have handled it better'?
Really enjoy all the shit you do, you were great last year on BFQOTY too so thanks for the entertainment!
P.S. if you come back to southend can I show them this comment and get up front row?
Hi Jessie. Big fan from Norway. Not very patriotic hahah, but you are the only CC skier i root for this Olympic Games. Wish you good luck under the games and may the odds be ever in your favor. Question : How supportive is the american community, and how big is the Cross Country skiing sport in the U.S ?
Btw: I want more dancing videos on IG!!
You are a true follower! I definitely had a bit of the Raptor scene from the Lost World video game for those who would remember. Like you.
I have several jobs lined up. Hope I will be hired back tomorrow!
I'ma plummer by trade but all my welding and machining skills are all self taught. I've just bought tools and tried to use them. Things have been broken along the way
If you have a lot of carpeting, a carpet rake can be used prior to vacuuming to save on bags or having to empty dust bins as much.
Also, with that kind of heavy duty environment, you really should invest in a premium vacuum and then have it serviced regularly. You should also do monthly maintenance on your brush roller, to remove any built up hair on the brush and around the brush bearing end caps. This will greatly increase the lifespan of the brush roller and belts. Change your belts once a year.
THat fly thing was the maddest thing that happened on the whole tour - Thanks for coming!
Thanks for being our fan! Skiing in the US isn't very big compared to other sports, but our fans are really passionate and awesome! So, I think we need to get a World Cup to the US to help grow the sport and continue the live streaming of World Cups so our fans can follow along!
It blows my mind how you go from a piano composed piece to a fully orchestrated score, what is that process? Do you personally orchestrate the music for each instrument? Collaborate with others etc?
PS 50th Birthday Gala was utterly incredible :)
What was your job before you were arrested?
Thanks for the info! Top 3 recommended make/models?
It's all about how I hear it in my head. Think of it as a painting. You start with a pencil sketch outline (the piano sketch) and then you start to fill in the colors (the various instruments). Painting and Orchestrating are very similar in many regards.
I was a weekend custodial guy at the University of South Florida, a position I held for almost 5 years.
I have many favourites but the bunker gets used the most, the mobility scooter launched the channel and I can't believe the hover bike worked
The top three brands in the US are Riccar, Miele, and Sebo. Not necessarily in that order. Obviously, with all three, the more you spend the more vacuum you're gonna get.
Michael, I love the piece Married Life from Up so much that I brought myself to learn the piano to play it. Was there a piece of music that gave you the motivation to play music?
What was their reaction, they fire you immediately, or did you quit?
What do you think you might do for work now?
Where do you get inspiration from? On a similar note, what youtube channels are your favorite?
On episodes of "Taskmaster" and interviews following it, quite often you acted like you genuinely weren't enjoying being on the show and regretted agreeing to appear (particularly this interview - transcript/video). How much of this was your grumpy stage persona and how much is genuine? What was your experience of "Taskmaster" really like?
Thoughts on Klæbos peculiar ski form of running on skis in the classic races?
My dad had a huge record collection and I was listening to it since I can remember, so I loved all kinds of music: jazz, big band, classical. I do remember trying to sound out Jaws at a young age!
I was fired by the president of the University.
Inspiration can come from many places, other videos, silly thoughts and accidental mistakes. Hacksmith, James Bruton and Alec Steele are pretty good!
You're welcome. I hope it was helpful.
Everything I do is genuine. I enjoyed Taskmaster but I was aggrieved at some of the injustices.
He's really, really good at it!
How do you feel about the YouTube community right now? Also, have you ever thought about a colab with William Osman or one of the other engineerish channels?
My budget is $150.
Mostly laminate floors with a couple of thick rugs. No pets, couple of kids.
Which vacuum do you recommend?
Romesh mate. Any plans on more of them BBC3 “interviews cum conversations” that you had with Jack Dee, James Acaster etc.?
3 minute YouTube clips just aren’t enough.
Hi Jessie! Big fan from Denmark here who wants to know if you hadn't become a cross country skier what would then have become? A dancer perhaps? =)
I feel YouTube is the same now as it ever was with people talking and sharing ideas. It's just got bigger which can change people's perceptions. I'll have to check that guy out!
Anything under $200 is gonna be pure shit. The best bang for your buck @ $200 MSRP is Fuller Brush's Easy Made. It's a helluva lot of vacuum for the price and won't fall apart as fast as the shitty ones.
Haha yes, I definitely would have wanted to become a dancer! I don't think I would have been good enough for that, but I always really enjoyed helping other people be active and get outdoors so I would have been involved in sports in one way or another.
For my money you are as close to an heir to John Williams as any composer today. There is a "brightness" to your scores that I really only ever hear in Williams' work. What is the extent of your relationship with John Williams, and have you had conversations with Disney about further work on the Star Wars series?
Did doing stuff like that give you a high? What was your primary motivation? And how do you recommend getting across to others who still partake in harmful "pranks" and cyber bullying?
Hey Colin. Thanks for the videos. I was turned on to them by an old mate of yours here in Thailand. He passes on this message:
Hey fur ball .. hows it going when can we make some more cheap kungfu movies
As for my question: When are you coming down to Thailand to make a few videos? Let's just say there are fewer safety rules/regulations down here.
So based on your previous threads, I bought a Miele C3 cat/dog. Love the vacuum, but I'm a little confused about setting the height for the powerhead for our carpet.
Obviously too low and it's too hard to push around, and too high and it's not touching the carpet at all. But there seem to be two settings that "work" for each of our different carpets (we have carpeted rooms with a 3/4 inch pile, and then some rugs that are lower).
Is there any more accurate way to determine the ideal height? If there are two that seem to work, is it better to pick the higher or lower one? Am I just way-overthinking this?
Is there any joke that once those words left your mouth you instantly regretted, or thought you went to far, and if so, what was it?
Good luck this winter Jessie! How do you explain the difference in performance/success between your team and the men’s ? Y’all are inspiring. Hopefully they’ll catch up!
Thanks! John and I are friends - he's been an amazing person to get to know over the years. As for the future - nothing planned as of yet. Pretty busy on non-star wars projects!
Absolutely it was a high. Coupled with being drunk. It was a different kind of euphoria having the power to make people freak out think something bad is going to happen when it really isn't.
Funny you should ask I have an idea in mind which would take me there. Tell Tanner fish freedom is looking for him
With every vacuum that has height adjustment there is only one proper procedure to determine the best height.
Always start on the highest setting and work it down just until it starts to vibrate the rug/carpet, an NO lower. This allows for ideal agitation in the fibers and airflow into the vacuum. Also, with your Miele, keep in mind that the ideal power settings are the rug settings whenever you're on carpeting.
My mum and wife are a bit pissed off about what i said about them this morning in an interview.
I think our men are training really hard and doing all the right things - but sometimes you see countries gain momentum one way or the other and it's just hard to explain! Some countries are much better at classic, for example, and some have a stronger women's program, but I've seen a lot of our younger athletes training and I'm confident that they're going in the right direction!
I'm making a low budget erotic sci-fi romance movie that's like 50 Shades of Grey meets Star Wars and Zootopia. Would you be interested in scoring it for me? My budget is $13.
And have you ever cried while scoring anything? Specifically Coco or Up?
did the realization that there are actual dangers incurred from such behavior; make you feel a sense of guilt and as though you had done something definitely wrong? do you feel regret over your decisions and not because of the impact it had on you personally?
How much notice do you give to the neighbours / the police / the council for your projects? The AT-AT for exampple, did you need planning permission for that?
Oh shit, I've been doing the complete opposite! I thought that getting the bristles deeper in = deeper clean. 😫
Do you think your style of comedy will have to be modified in any way for the US audience? I saw the clip you tweeted on the American news/breakfast show, and I feel like they were a bit taken aback at your sarcasm, dead-pan way and saying things like you hate living with your mum.
are there certain people you don't get along with, or are you forced to be close with everyone?
I've cried during UP, COCO, INSIDE OUT, APES - you name it. You get very emotionally involved in making the music match the emotions of the characters - so you sometimes have to feel what they are feeling - it's a lot like acting.
Good luck with your film! Sounds genre breaking.
I feel guilty for it every day. I wish I had not have been such a loser. The hardest part was encountering the people at the STAR Behavioral center who were directly affected. I tried so hard to prove that it was just a mistake.
It changed me personally because I have now eliminated negativity from my life. I am going to be more outgoing and positive and really try to make an impact on the people I know and will meet. I don't want to be a bad guy or solely know as the guy who went to prison for trolling... I want to be a guy who is know to persevere.
Exactly the opposite of what you intended. It wears out your vacuum and your carpet.
I think that part of being a good teammate is knowing that you might not normally hang out with your teammates in regular life, but to be a good teammate is to have their back and look out for them, and to support them! So our goal is not to be best friends, but to be "best teammates" as that's an even more important thing.
Have you talked to Rian Johnson yet about his trilogy?
I'm assuming that John Williams will retire after Episode IX and you will be the new SW music guy.
Have you ever watched the "Fresh Out" series on youtube about prison/getting out?
It's really interesting and I'm wondering if you had similar experiences?
Like, did you ever get your cheeks busted or have to split some wigs?
What are your feelings in regards to hard wood flooring/tile/linoleum?
Were you raised vegetarian? Why did you go vegan? I love hummus.
Stillwater Nordic Alum here; being on the team with you and watching you race was such an awesome experience. Your legacy is part of the reason the Ponies are still thriving, and you can do so much more than compete!
In the future, after your competitive years, what do you see yourself doing for the good of the sport?
I haven't spoken to him about it but can't wait to see what he's done!
I have been notified of it and have bookmarked it for future viewing. I am still getting caught up.
To my surprise we woke up in the morning and it had all burnt away. I think the ground was so hot it helped keep the coals burning until gone
Bare floors are certainly cleaner than carpeting. Carpeting is the single filthiest thing in one's home.
I decided to go veggie at 12. And then veganism followed five years ago.
Hey! So fun to hear from a Stillwater alum! I think after a few years I'd like to get into coaching at some level to help give back to the sport I love so much!
Hey Michael, Big fan! Thank you for doing this.
What goes into composing your iconic motifs? The Incredibles, Up, Star Trek... I can't even name them all.
How exactly did they track you down?
Hi Colin, been a fan for years, your projects are great.. my favourite is the TukTuk..
Simple question... how many fireworks for 6 million subs and what will they be attached to ? :D
Ugh, and the weirdest of people that have carpeting in their BATHROOM! How can anyone think that is ok? I can't even keep a bath mat in there...
What's your favorite cereal?
Well all I can say is I try to find a musical equivalent to the story and characters of the film. Its hard to explain but it's all about what feels right when Im sitting at the piano.
The FBI got my IP address and my ISP gave them my billing info.
That is fucking disgusting! I actually have a customer with a carpeted kitchen for fuck's sake.
I like to bake granola - ginger molasses is my current favorite!
Is it true you scored Rogue One in only four weeks? Why so short a time? And how did you DO that?
Upthread, you mentioned the euphoria of manipulating people. There are a lot of programs and ideas being thrown about on how to discourage other people, especially young people, from doing something similar. What do you think would be most effective?
Hi Colin, Love your work! Have you ever destroyed a safety tie or has it always done it’s job?
I had an apartment with carpeted kitchen. Week 1 I dropped an egg, and from that day on I could never walk barefoot in my own kitchen for fear of what else was in there.
I came on to the project late after reshoots and Alexandre Desplat had scheduling conflicts, so there was only 4 and half weeks at the point in the production schedule. I just focused on getting it done, and pretty much did nothing else!
Showing the weirdness of being disconnected from the constant flow of information. Like I can't count the times I wish I could have Google'd the answer to something or have even checked simple baseball scores.
We are currently on the 2nd tie and 3rd shirt. The previous tie was falling apart and stank really bad
Do you know the song from Once, "Broken Hearted Hoover-Fixer-Sucker Guy"? It is a gem. I hope you don't have a similar sad tale.
Romesh, how do you keep your beard looking so good? What's your secret?
Hey Jessie! I skied throughout high school, and am also from MN! I love watching you race and kick ass! It was awesome to hear that your favorite memory from high school racing was going up to Giants Ridge for 3 days since that was also my favorite memory from high school skiing (my team did the exact same thing haha).
Where was/is your favorite place to ski in Minnesota? In the world?
Is there a piece of advice someone or a coach gave you which really stuck with you?
Next year I want to test something in an exotic location so I actually get a holiday!
That is a great song. I have a sad tale of my own.
Hey that's awesome! Giants Ridge camp is so awesome. In Minnesota, I have a real soft spot for Giants Ridge, especially the silver course because of all the ups and downs and fun corners! In the world, I really love training in Seiser Alm, Italy because of the sun, amazing ski trails and great food. :) My coach said "nobody ever died of disappointment. You'll never regret giving it everything you have and not coming out on top, but you'll always regret not trying at all".
Hey Colin, love the channel! What project would you most like to do if you had an unlimited budget?
It seems like every time I buy a vacuum cleaner, they lose all suction within a week. My dirt devil just happened to have this problem. I tried cleaning out all the ports on it and still nothing, bad suction like all the other vacs I get. What's going on you think?
On a scale of 1 to Sadiq Khan, how much of a coconut are you?
Have say I love your racing and attitude towards the sport and everything you do.
Norwegian skiers become "superstars" and seem to get whatever they want in life. What do you see yourself doing when the skiing career is over?
Thanks and good luck racing in Lillehammer- kill those decents :o)
We pretrialed it all the way until the day before actual trial, then I flipped my plea and took the deal.
You're buying shitty vacuums.
Seriously, spend more for a higher quality vacuum that has better performance. Also, I'm not saying you're a dirty person, but vacuuming at least once a week can help alleviate clogs.
Also, take your time vacuuming. Racing through the job can cause lots of debris to come rushing in and causing a blockage.
One last thing...do manually pick up any objects larger than dirt, dust, and hair to avoid those clogging your vac.
I think all the skiers on the World Cup, no matter where they're from, have to work so hard to find success and achieve their goals. When I'm done skiing, I think I want to take some dance classes and take a mental break from the sport for a little bit! :) Then I'll go back to school and finish University.
Big fan of your work..I honestly believe your Star Trek theme is one the greatest themes ever made. That said. What was your favorite movie to score or tv show to score?
What made you think that was a good idea? I’m not even being an asshole, I promise. When I was a freshman (2000) a kid in my grade made a bomb threat though some really vague communication with someone on a burner phone, they caught him quickly and we never saw him again. Even though you were states away, you weren’t nervous?? Did you know they were coming for you, or was it a surprise? Thank you, I followed you from the other thread.
Have you made any inventions that you actually use on a day to day basis? I don't imagine a thermite kettle to be too practical in the long run
Which one wins in a fight, a roomba or a Corgi? The Corgi has heterochromia if that affects the odds at all.
Any news on Series three of Asian Provocateur? I am hoping for a series Down Under, featuring Uncle Rags - I think he lives there?
I can hook you up with the Lankan scene in Sydney - I was an honorary member of UCB, the United Curry Brothers in high school.
Jessie! Hi! Who’s the funniest non-American/Canadian at the World Cup races?
Thank you so much! No real favorite - enjoyed them all for different reasons - but I do love LOST!
It was kind of like the old 4chan cardstand threads. You know, the one where someone would post the webcam of Times Square that was positioned in front of a store with a Cardstand out front. OP would then say, HEY IM GOING TO TIP OVER THAT CARDSTAND IN 30 MINUTES! And then it never happens. It was like that. HEY I AM GOING TO SHOOT UP A SCHOOL IN FOUR HOURS, the goal is to make you wait the 4 hours to see if it actually happens.
I mean, Roombas are kinda cheaply built. I think a Corgi could take it.
Rags is up for it. He is actually in the room with me here.
Never say never. But very unlikely.
Haha that's a great question! I feel like a lot of the techs and coaches have a great sense of humor and are always joking around.
Hi Mr. Giacchino, I'm a huge fan of yours. I remember watching Star Trek for the first time and being completely overwhelmed with emotions when Labor of Love played. Absolutely the most beautiful music I've heard. Was there anything that influenced you while you composed it?
Where do you think you’re going after this, and how do you think it changed from what where you would be going?
Hi Colin - who is your favourite tube supplier in Peterborough and why is it Apex Tubes?
What are your thoughts on built in vacuum systems for homes? I have a Miele vacuum that I love but will be building a home soon and some people are suggesting it would be a mistake not to get one built in. If I do go that route, what are the better brands?
Thank you. I was influenced by the story, the fact that this guy was going to die on a mission and at the same time his child was being born who he would never meet. And he was aware of that, it was really sad, so I wrote what I felt.
I would be dead now. My drinking would have gotten to the point where I could have gone drinking and driving.
Now, even through this painful experience, I see a light. I am smarter and more driven to be an amazing, hard working person who will overcome this thing.
I just love that dairy grade stainless and the free supply of biscuits
Central vac systems are great if you're building a home. That being said, because of the long, heavy hoses most systems use, just about everyone I know with a CV system also has a conventional vac because the don't enjoy lugging around the hoses.
You’re my favorite composer ever! Would you come to my wedding?
What was your daily routine in prison?
Have you been to Bombay Cottage in Stamford? I went on the way to Stansted from the north and it was well nice
edit: holy shit I just found this image when googling it https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/07/fb/1c/aa/havin-fun-with-our-tuck.jpg
Brand suggestions? And yes, the suggestion was that if we do get a central vac that we get a hose for every floor (which makes me think we might as well get a vacuum for every floor if we do that).
Wake up about 6:30AM, go to breakfast, come back, watch the first hour of GMA. Then watch Match Game on GSN, then go outside to listen to BBC News Hour on my radio, come back in for count, lunch, Afternoon GED instructor job, count again, dinner, jeopardy, more TV then bed. Rinse, Repeat.
The only system I know well that is available today is by ProLine. They have systems big enough for just about any home.
The price to have a system installed, complete with a high-end power brush head is gonna cost roughly $1300-$2000.
Love your work! I just found out about this AMA seconds after you tweeted it.
Who is your favorite composer? What is your favorite movie score/soundtrack?
What was your first meal once you got out of prison?
What is the most scared you have ever been doing one of your videos?
Kirby vs dyson?
Hey Romesh! My husband and I are big fans of you from Taskmaster, but that's the only thing we know you from. It's kinda hard to follow our favorite British comics when we live in America. :( What projects are you most proud of? We'll try to find ways to watch and share the best we can!
We use Taskmaster as a background show to put on when we have family/friends over and try to show others what great humor panel shows have. It's gotten great reception... If it makes any difference, your name is definitely in this American household often!
Nah they love their roids
That's a question I can never give one name to. I love Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams Alex North, huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith, and then I love all kinds of music, Big Band, classical, marching band, can't name just one. I love the score to King Kong, the original by Max Steiner, it's the grandfather of all film scores.
My Family and I ordered a 120 Nugget Party platter from Chick-Fil-A in Princeton, WV. IT WAS AMAZING!!
Half way through the 360 swing build it didn't look safe which was worrying as I was nearly 10 metres off the ground!
Not a big fan of either. The Kirby lasts forever, but has shit filtration. The Dysons have shit airflow, choke on everything, and fall apart with ease.
Please watch everything. I'm not proud of any of it though.
I'm glad you like my dance videos! I am a huge supporter of clean sport and a fair playing field. I have to trust that FIS and the IOC will do their job to protect every athlete's right to clean sport and fair competition, no matter where they are from.
have you ever worn womens clothing? me and my buddy have a little bet going on....
At what point did: "wow, i'm fucked." sink in?
Would you ever consider a colab with Adam Savage, aka. u/mistersavage? A video of you guys on Tested would be amazing.
We have a Rainbow (not my choice, husband bought it some years before we met) and I fucking hate it. I hate its big heavy dumbshit canister, I hate its stupidly short hoses, I hate dumping out carpet soup when I'm done with it. Given the option I'd happily fill the water reservoir with kerosene and light the bitch on fire.
Unfortunately, a quality vacuum isn't in the budget right now. Any tips on keeping this big dumb sonofabitch in good shape?
And thanks for doing another AMA! Never thought vacuum cleaners could be this interesting.
Romesh, I feel as though I was born in the wrong country because I absolutely love British humor. As one of my favorite comedians I always use you as one of my go to comedians to introduce Americans to how much better comedy is over there. I have to say in addition to all of your stand up that I absolutely love Tree Wizard. Did you ever think it would be as well received as it was? Video for those that haven't seen it. Tree Wizard
Last question, Who's cooler? Me(Matt Hempe) from Minnesota or Tony Mathie from Pennsylvania?
When the FBI agent called me.
Yeah there's a few I'd like to collab with that are stateside but the huge, gaping pot of water in between makes things difficult. My next collab will probs be with Alec Steele
Thank you for the kind words. I'm sorry about your Rainbow woes.
The best thing I can tell you to keep it in tip top shape is to always empty and set the bowl aside to dry when you finish vacuuming. Take off the separator and rinse it off every time. If the separator is caked with scale, soak it overnight in a cup of vinegar.
Wipe the motor gasket (the part that sits on the bowl) and keep it clean and supple.
Change your belt on the powerbrush nozzle once a year, and take the brush roller out once every month or two to check for hair around the bearing end caps.
I did Tree Wizard just as a task and the song was something i just improv'd on the day. I am delighted to see its genius recognised.
Haha what a loaded question! I have a lot of MN pride, so I'm going to have to give this one to you.
Michael, you won't remember me - we use to email one another way back when you were working with Peter at Dreamworks Interactive, I think I sent you a cassette or a CD once? - but I wanted to say thank you for all the music you've created since then, most especially for your work with the Wachowskis. Speed Racer is one of my very favorite movies ever and a large part of that is because of your music.
I guess I only have one question: Way back when your website first went up, you had sheet music from the first two MOH games on there (the title to the first game and Under The City from MOH:U). Is there any chance you can get them (or other cues!) reposted? I've always wanted to try my hand at transcribing your MOH stuff to solo piano.
Thank you so much again.
How do you feel now coming back to the internet? I feel like i'd never use the internet again after going to prison for it.
Hello, thank you for your time and efforts
How do you scavenge for parts? Do have quite the collection before hand or you go looking during the planning stages?
I have inherited a rainbow vacuum that I am pretty happy with, with one exception. I have a Cane Corso (big dog), and even after thoroughly cleaning the vacuum, it smells like heated dog funk every time I run it. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of that??
How come nobody ever mentions Atmosphere on your hip hop saved my life podcast? Love hhsml though, who raps the intro?
Peter and I are still best friends - see him regularly. Unfortunately I can't post that music again - perhaps it will be available one day officially - we are working on that. Go Speed Racer Go!
I thought I would be banned from the internet. So much has changed. It's taking a while to get used too. Like WHY is the Facebook app 600mb on Android?
A little bit of both. Four of the under bench drawers you see in the shed are full of potentially useful items. Sometimes I'll find an item and make the project around that
Take it to your local vac repair shop for a cleaning service.
A friend of mine, comedian David Jordan
Do you tear up at the first 5 minutes of Up like the rest of us do?
What was the thought process behind the school you picked? Was it just totally random - dart at a map sort of thing?
What was your trial like? Was the prosecution focused on proving you made the threats, or trying to show how damaging the effect was, or trying to paint you as a dangerous character?
It was basically a random place I picked out. Oh, the prosecution did everything they could. The media followed my case every time I had a pretrial, there was a camera.
Yes, the French need more poking. A post Brexit build may be in order
With a really aggressive agitator and a self-propelling transmission, I assume.
I would love to interview Nas.
Huge fan! Always excited to see your name come up in the credits when I'm starting a film or tv show. May be a dumb question, but as someone curious about the politics of entertainment, who reaches out to you and requests your work on their project? Is it one of the creative-types involved or is it an executive-type, or does it always differ? That being asked, who first approached you to work on Lost?
Are prisons really as racially segregated as shown on TV? Where you only able to socialize with other people who shares your skin color?
I love an overly aggressive agitator, nothing is more funny to me then when my Riccar head for my CV hits a weird carpet and sounds like a wookie getting fucked by an oddly shaped cactus.
No not really. The prison I was at was about 55% African American, 40% White, and 5% other races. Most guys are cool with each other. The only thing that really causes problems is calling someone a "bitch" regardless of race.
Yes got to fully test things
Did you ever feel like a criminal when you did the trolling and did you ever think it would/could backfire?
Which project gave you the most satisfaction when you finished it?
I wanted a Riccar Butler, but it seems to be discontinued. Should I buy used or is there a better product in the car-detailing segment?
No, I just felt like your average troll. Just took it a little too far obviously.
The 100mph dodgem as I'd made such a good job of it I couldn't stop staring at it!
Tacony still makes a commercial version of the Butler under the brand name Clean Max. Your Riccar dealer can order one from his supplier for you.
When other teachers found out what happened.
Being a composer, when you watch a film are you more tuned into the score? Does it ever distract you from the big picture so to speak?
Have you seen the troll trace South Parks?
If you use a vaccum cleaner to clean another, does it become a vacuum cleaner vaccuum cleaner?
It makes you a vacuum cleaner cleaner and your vacuum cleaner cleaner.
How many messages do you get from couples saying they used the score from the opening scene in UP (The Carl and Ellie montage) as their wedding song?
Did you get any of /sp/'s letters while in jail?
Do you plan your designs beforehand, or just get an idea and run with it? Also, how often have you gotten to the middle of a project and found you had to change everything? Thanks for doing this AMA! One of my favorite channels on YouTube.
You're a legend!
Thoughts on hand vacuums? I'm looking for something for the car mainly. :)
Yes I got quite a few. I was surprised at how supportive most of them were.
I may do a rough sketch but most of the time I just start and yes you do sometimes have to change things
Thanks! There's a lot of options out there. Try visiting your local vacuum retailer. Support your locally owned small businesses.
I am more happy at a potential Spurs decline
Michael, I am such a fan and have been following your career as you soar from amazing project to amazing project. I am a composer myself and am wondering if you’d be willing to share what your writing process is like.
Do you work alone on a piece from start to finish in a DAW at your home studio, or do you have an office/workspace that you go to write?
How much of your writing is “playing around” with melodies and experimentation and how much is a focused approach with a clear direction in your mind?
You've spoken a bit how you realized you were in actual, serious trouble when the FBI called you.
I don't want to dredge up bad memories, but can you walk us through what that actually felt like? Knowing that they were coming after you. Were you sick? Did some kind of "flight" instinct kick in where you felt like running? A lot of pacing and anxiety? Did you call your parents?
Just wondering how it went down. Good to see you're on a better path now, man.
Hello Colin. I really enjoy watching your videos on YouTube. A lot of the time, it seems that you're working alone in your shed. Are there generally more people around working on things than we see, or are you typically just slogging away keeping yourself (and us) entertained?
Who have you seen perform or worked with that makes you laugh the most? :)
I work alone in my home office. It's just me here writing. My orchestrations are pretty complete before handing them off for final orchestrations.
Once I have a melody in place that I am happy with I go right to writing the scenes. I don't spend a lot of time playing around - I'm pretty focused and usually know where I want to take something.
Well, when I spoke to the FBI agent over the phone he demanded somewhere I could meet with him immediately. It was the morning after the iPhone 6 came out and I had been waiting in line all night with a friend. So I meet with him at the local Waffle House. My instinct the entire time was to try and explain that the threat was just a joke post on 4chan and that I would never hurt anyone. At the end of the meeting I was in tears but he said the FBI was not charging me but he had to report back to Ohio and it was up to them to charge me and left the meeting. Ohio issued the warrant and I was arrested in Florida the next day.
Most of the time it is just me but Rick helps me out on the larger projects where a second pair of hands is needed. But I do all the editing, designing, social media etc all myself
I'm a massive Bill Burr fan
Hi mate, love from Northern Ireland.
How many scores on average do you do per year?...and is it tough to start from scratch on a new project?
Cheers, keep up the good work
You met with the FBI without a lawyer?! Jesus.
How often do sponsors reach out to you to make thing like the Deus Ex gauntlets and others?
Wu Tang Clan or Curry?
Hello Northern Ireland! It depends on the year - some years it may be 3 some it may be 5. I love the beginning of a new project - it's always fun to get the engine started and see where it will take me.
Yeah, THAT was a huge mistake.
Things come in waves as games, films etc. all tend to come out at similar times eg. spring, summer, Christmas
Curry while listening to Wu-Tang.
Is there any casual ways prison had changed your life? Like new interests, new skills, even new knowledge you had never even thought of perusing before?
Will your Mum be sitting in the front row at the Greek heckling you?
I got so into Jeopardy. I watched and self kept my own score for 386 episodes. I am seriously going to write the producers and show them my self scoring system and let them know how much the show meant to me to help me get through the toughest time of my life.
Yes she will. She says she won't heckle.
Thank you for the AMA! I loved your scoring of Rouge One and thought you did a tremendous job stepping into the huge shoes of John Williams!
What sort of training do you think one needs in order to scoring films? How reliant are you on common practice composition standards in your writing and how important do you think these are in educating contemporary composers? What advice would you give aspiring film composers?
Worst thing about prison? Best thing about it? How did your family and friends react? How do the act around you now that you're back?
I mentioned this in a comment section but it didn't really pick up steam so I'm going to mention it here as a potential project for Furze's invention show. Can you make a machine, that makes coleslaw? So you put all your lovely veggies in and a few jars of mayo and it slices the veggies and mixes it all together all at once. Inb4 any smartass tries to mention a food processor or a blender they don't chop things they just mush which isn't what the beautiful slaw is about. On a related note more Furze's invention show pls xox.
Who convinced you to do a Reddit AMA?
You need to know the basics - learning all of the traditional methods so that you can then take them in whatever direction you want. It's like being an animator - learn figure drawing first THEN break the rules. Take film classes as well - not just music classes. Learn editing directing lighting so you can communicate in the language of film with the people you will be working with. Learn Film History too!
Worst thing, the food. Aramark ran the food service at the prison I was at and they were probably spending $1 a day per inmate for 3 meals. Best thing, it's hard to say but probably the ability to tune out and be disconnected from the internet. I read about 20 books during my stay and watched 386 episodes of Jeopardy.
It's a good idea but a Furze slaw wouldn't have mayo in as I hate it. Mother used salad cream as a replacement, is this acceptable?
I can't remember but I am regretting it.
Mr. Giacchino, First let me say thank you for all the fantastic audial memories and emotional musical journeys you have brought to every ear that your compositions touch. I think you're a fantastic composer and cannot wait to hear your future works.
For just a bit of backstory, since I started playing Trombone (6th grade), I've always thought about what it would be like to play in the recording of a film score. Although this is not the direction I have taken in my career path (just obtained my Bachelor's in Instrumental Music Education), I would still love to accomplish this dream someday. This is where my questions are coming from.
How are members of the ensemble selected? (Is it usually just a prejoined ensemble, such as the New York Philharmonic, or does the Studio usually have a list of musicians on call?)\ If most studios only use preexisting ensembles, which ones get chosen the most, or if they hire individual musicians: (next 2 questions)
How would a single musician get onto the call list\into the business of recording film soundtracks?
Do you conduct the ensembles recording your compositions, or does someone else conduct them? If not you, then do you pick the conductor, or does the Studio?
And this is just because I'm curious: 4. What was it like to play a Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens?
Why did you take away from prison?
I tried to spruik you over at r/vegan for this AMA but also for your attempt to 'crack America', but you only have the Greek Theatre show advertised! Are you mostly focusing on the doco, or doing smaller local shows there too, and how can people find out about them?
It's the old joke, How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. Kidding aside, the musicians who are studio musicians have been working for years. They have to come to the session not knowing what they are playing and sit down and start recording, they sight read on the spot. So it's all about coming out to LA, starting work where you can, meeting musicians, joining organizations such as ASMAC, SCL (look them up), just start gigging. Some of the musicians that play on my scores have been recording things for forty or more years. There really isn't a direct path that I can tell you. We don't use the "LA PHIL" but musicians in the orchestra play for other composers, etc.
That I never want to go BACK to prison. Being a thousand miles away from home, not being able to be with the people who love and care for you, how much you miss the simple things in life like bathroom privacy...
I will tweet all of my gigs in the run up to the Greek
Michael, over the last decade you have quickly become one of my favorite film composers out there! You've crafted so many fantastic scores with so many fun, memorable themes.
Here are 2 questions I have for you:
What can you tease about the score for Incredibles 2? Other than the main theme, what else might carry over and return musically from the first film? What new material might we look forward to? Having thought you would be fired from the first film, I'd like to hear what excites you about the new film.
More importantly, what has been your favorite pun-filled title that you and you music editors have come up with over the years? I absolutely LOVE them, but was wondering if you have a favorite(s).
Thank you for your incredible music (no pun intended), cant wait to hear what the future has in store for you!
Speaking of loved ones, what was the reaction of all of your family? Upset, angry? Were you disowned? Did they visit you in prison? Did they welcome you back to the free world with open arms?
How are you finding the differences between British & US crowds and you have to tailor your material to suit?
1) Well the style will be similar but look for new themes and set pieces to expand on the last film.
2) I like a LOT of them - but It Takes One To Rogue One is pretty good I think.
My family was disappointed but they have been completely supportive the entire time. Along with my friends and church. I am so lucky to have so many people care for me. It makes you appreciate the people in your life.
I started on the first of August and finished 10th October but in the middle I built the Assassin's Creed hidden blade so I think 6-7 weeks
US crowds are offended by different things. but otherwise the same.
ever thought about going on robot wars? or making something even better aka something that wouldnt fit to their pansy safety rules ;D
You get one tweet for the rest of your life. Who do you tweet and what do you say?
I'm leaving Twitter.
Hello Mr. Giacchino,
I have been pondering this question for some time now and I believe you may be able to help. What is the best way to cook eggs for breakfast to start your musical days off the right way? I have tried sunny side up and scrambled by neither quite do the trick for me. Do you have any recommendations?
What are your future aspirations?
As a creator who are some of your biggest influences, in the past and today?
Hi Romesh, I'm also a stone faced brown man and as such I'm a big big fan of your work. I really loved the interaction with your little cousin in both series of Asian Provocateur. What's the stupidest question you've gotten while in America and does it top the stupidest one you've gotten in the UK/elsewhere abroad?
COYBOY STYLE! Just crack the eggs into the skillet and cook em! Butter and Salt - that's it!!
Get a STEM degree and start a family and advocate anti-trolling.
Love the Victorians as they built everything so solid and to last. As for the present so many people doing so many cool things it's hard to choose. Also I'm locked in a shed for 24hrs so I have blinkered vision
Someone asked me why Islam is so evil.
Currently tearing up just thinking about the “Oceanic Six” How did you and JJ Abrams start collaborating ? I’ve been a fan since Alias ( which btw is severely under estimated )
Now that you are out, what plans do you have for the next year or two of your life in terms of bettering yourself, and were you able to learn any trades or education in prison? Also, I'm from the Tampa Bay area also, have you heard about the possible serial killer in Seminole Heights?!
How smug will you be if you ever actually have to use your bunker?
Are you ever going to release a rap album?
I had been writing music for video games when I received an email from J.J. I actually thought that it was a joke that one of my friends was playing on me, I didn't really know who he was and hadn't watched Felicity. But I called the number on the email and it was him and he said "I heard your music from Medal of Honor, I have a new show coming up called Alias and I'd love to talk to you about scoring it. The rest, as they say, is history.
I'm structuring my entire life. I will be doing my 50/50/50 plan. I can not go to bed at night unless I do 50 minutes of working out, 50 minutes of learning Spanish, and 50 minutes of learning Piano. It gets me off the computer and broadening my horizons.
I love hip hop too much to insult it like that.
As someone who loves all of Pixar's original songs (especially Le Festin, which is how I chose my username) and can't wait to see Coco, I just want to know, has Pixar considered making more musicals? Thank you so much for doing this AMA and for being one of the best composers working today.
If you ever have any questions about piano in your learning please let me know I would be happy to help you. Best of luck :)
Love the channel Colin, also saw your exhibit at Beaulieu which was awesome.
My question is has there been a project you scrapped or altered for safety reasons? Also will you be doing more on YouTube red or will you be doing free to watch from now on?
Who is funnier, your Mom or your Uncle?
Go see Coco, it's the closest thing to a musical that Pixar has ever done. At the moment I have no idea if they have a musical in the pipeline.
There is no more YouTube Red videos so all videos free as normal from now on. I made a bacon cooking machine which at present is a bacon jamming and burning machine
Neither of them are funny.
Loved your Spider-Man homecoming score! Will you back for the sequel and do you ha e anything planned for it yet?
Where there any things you were particularly scared about that turned up not being a big deal or not as serious when you got sentenced?
And on the flip side was there anything that you thought woulden't be too bad but ended up being a lot worse.
Also, if you don't mind me asking..How old are you?
How do you find sponsors? Do they come to you or do you go to them? Also what was the best sponsor to work with?
How many shows had you performed before you knew you’d be a professional comedian?
That's a ways off but I'm hoping to continue what I started - more news to come.
Prison Rape really isn't a big deal thanks to PREA. I thought it would be going on non-stop.
And air conditioning. Since it was Ohio, I thought the dorm not having air conditioning would be fine. Winter and Summer really proved that wrong.
All sponsors come to me. They're all great to work with as I only work with sponsors who allow me to do what I want to do
Hi Colin!! Been a subscriber for over a year now, love your style of building, what was the first large piece of manufacturing equipment you bought for your shed, and which machine would you miss the most if it broke?
Are you ever performing in the UK again??
A pillar drill would be the first large one but welder would be missed as when I first learnt to weld I felt like the world was opened up before me
Definitely. Tour being written as we speak.
Hey Colin. We are engineers and developers. Some of the videos you make inspire us. Have you ever thought of making a jetpack build? A more serious question though, what do you think of STEM initiatives for school children?
Any recent success in finding good vegan cheese?
Yeah I'd love to make a jetpack at some point as it would complete my James Bond villain status to go with my bunker. As for STEM getting kids into science, building or anything in a practical way from an early age is great
I currently like Miyoko and Tyne Chease
Where do you look for inspiration when you score for animated movies? Has Joe Hisaishi been an influence on your work? Really proud that someone from South Jersey is doing great things - all the best!
Hey, I don’t know if you’re still reading these, but im wondering that, since you’ve said that you think you deserved your punishment, do you think you were a bad person before your arrest? Obviously prison has changed you, and served as a rehab facility like it is meant to, but personally i would have a hard time thinking of myself as a bad person whether past or present.
Thanks for doing this AMA!
How did you gain your initial YouTube audience? Was it a viral video that set off your career or was it constant really good videos or something else?
How's Rags? He's funnier than you.
The inspiration almost always comes fro the story itself and the characters. Putting myself in their shoes. Sometimes however it hits closer to home - like on Inside Out - that was all about my daughter. Go New Jersey!
I was definitely a bad person. What kind of good guy threatens to hurt little kids? Like what on EARTH was I thinking? I was alienating my friends to drive me places because I was drunk, I gave up on my responsibilities to my family and church all for the selfish purposes of drinking and internet.
Mixture of both. wall of death, mobility scooter, jet bike videos gave initial boost but good content has maintained growth
He's just started doing stand up so check him out.
How does it feel once you've completed a score and it finally gets recorded? Is there a sense of "Aha, that's it"! Do you ever feel like it was what you expected?
What's it like hearing about major world news from inside prison. Events like the shooting in vegas or the attacks in paris?
What do your wife and neighbors think of all of your shenanigans?
As a guy who wasn't always appreciative of his teachers back in the day (say about ten years ago), how could said guy make up for being a bit of a bell-end in class?
It's always a relief when we are finished recording the score. And sometimes I feel that "aha that's it!" moment, but more often than not I am not totally satisfied, which I think is good because that is what keeps you motivated as an artist.
I just wish the violence would stop. This one hurt the most. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/national-international/Jewish-Israeli-Suspect-JCC-Bomb-Threats-Israeli-Police-416919853.html
There are tough days for them but generally they are supportive!
Don't worry - part of teachers' job is to be underappreciated.
It's show them what it's like to be disconnected. I elaborated on that in another comment.
I'm good mate.
Big fan here (duh!) and I have a few quick questions that I hope you can help me with for a project I'm working on about the pilot of LOST.
1.) When JJ, Damon, Mary Jo and their crew were working on the pilot to create a version to present it to the network they used temp music from other movies by composers like Morricone, Carpenter or Zimmer. Those songs created such a different feeling for the pilot - it's really fascinating in comparison to your score.
I still got a copy of that version and I could make out that they used the opening theme from Blade Runner, the song "Silence" from The Thin Red Line and "Queen to Bishop" from Aliens. Do you know who chose those songs? Was it maybe you? Or haven't you been involved with that part of the process?
2.) Do you by any chance remember when you began writing the score for the pilot?
3.) Do you still know when you were done working on the pilot? The scoring for part 1 of the pilot was done/started August 24 2004 and part 2 was done/started, as far as I know, September 7 2004. I'm just curious, because this feels pretty late (just 2 weeks before the show went on air) when there were over 3 months in between.
4.) Has there been something/someone special that inspired your music for the pilot?
5.) Would you be willing to share some sheet music from the pilot? That would be very very cool!
What's your life plan after this?
Work as hard as I can, Love as hard as I can, Learn as much as I can, Be as positive as I can AND NEVER DRINK AGAIN.
I think diversity is an ongoing issue but I would love to see a lot more diversity behind the camera too.
Hello Mr. Giacchino, My name is Jonathan. Sorry for the long story but I wanted to take a moment to tell you thank you! In early 2010 I went to a church camp retreat and one night they played UP(never seen it before) for the movie night. I was not a very popular kid, being the really awkward fat kid I used to be. I sat away from the group and began to watch the film. Well we all known that opening scene of the film by now because I surely do. I remember watching that scene for the first time there and I remember seeing how the music was affecting everyone. I saw the church leaders, all the kids, and all the camp leaders go from expressing happy, to laughter, to sadness, to just in tears. To me it was one of the most beautiful memories I will always remember in my life! I felt it and seeing how the music itself was in a way screwing with the audience emotions, I thought that was the most amazing thing I have ever experience and I knew that is what I want to do. Everything I am was back that boy made that decision that night and I am happy with how far I’ve come. I’m proud of my work even though I am a 22 year old college student still learning and desperate to learn as much as I can. It all happened because I saw the movie and listened to the score. Will I make it? Who knows but all I know that my passion for composing and my love for film scores is because of that one moment, that one scene with your piece “Married Life”, that was one of those life changing moments that I just could not pass the opportunity to share with you how much your work has inspired and meant to me. Of course to also say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
My question: I love the MCU, been a fan since May 2nd 2008 Iron man, like huge nerd! So when I heard you were composing for Doctor Strange I lost my mind! Then when it was announced you were working on Spider-man: Homecoming, I honestly felt like this movie was made for me. Cause you got to see it in my point of view, my childhood superhero in the whole wide world who is the sole reason I love comics and everything related, he is finally in the MCU, and it is going to be composed by my idol. It is without a doubt my favorite film from the writing, costume, sets, cinematography, makeup, and of course the music! So I wanted to ask you, if Doctor Strange and Spider-man were to team up and you again were at helms to write the music. How would you approach that? A mix of both their themes or just start from scratch? Also if you have time, in an interview you said you asked Kevin Feige if you could write for Spider-man, besides him and Doctor Strange, which other marvel character would you like to write for? Just a real nerdy music question!
Thank you and I hope you have a safe day!
When did you first start doing comedy? and how the hell did you get so good at it?
Thanks for sharing your story about how you were inspired by Up. If I was writing a STRANGE/SPIDEY film, I would incorporate both of their themes and then create something new that would represent the story they were in. I am lucky that I have already written for two of my favorite Marvel characters...we will see what comes next.
I'm nowhere near as good as I want to be - I started about 8 years ago.
Who's your favourite comedian other than yourself?
Bill Burr is amazing. As is Chappelle.
Hey Mr Giacchino, big fan of your work The Incredibles soundtrack is one of my all time favourites.
Just want to ask who's idea was it to do the orchestral tv Spiderman theme for the beginning of Homecoming?
Both Kevin Feige at Marvel and I thought it would be a fun thing to do! And it was!
Who is this??
I just saw Coco and noticed your little cameo. Was it a surprise to you, or did you know about it beforehand?
Do you like the mix of working on different projects, like stand up, docos, sitcoms and other shows?
If you were guaranteed success, which one would you choose to do most of?
Well I see the film when I am scoring it. So when I got to that scene to write it, I thought that he looked like me, but didn't want to assume. When Lee Unkrich came by to go over the music we watched the scene together and afterwards he said, " Didn't you noticed something?" So it was a surprise, they were so excited about it. And I am really happy that they did it.
I always enjoy doing live most, but everything is fun.
Your music is so wonderful. It's my dream to play French horn on movie soundtracks. Any advice on how to get started? I can already play anything put in front of me.
How come you don't have any merch with your face on it? T-shirts, stuff like that?
It depends on where you are. You have to come out to LA and start getting involved in the music scene out here. You will find many musicians in their own groups, small orchestra ensembles, etc who are studio musicians, and they have to be able to play anything in front of them because they don't get music until the day of the gig.
There is some on the way.
Hello Mr. Giacchino, is there any piece that you wrote for any medal of honor that didn't make it to the game?, and what did inspire you when writing "North Africa" for MOH: Allied Assault? cheers from Chile!
Do they ask you to think up a good story when you go on Would I Lie to You? And if your story is too boring do they give you a lieto tell instead?
For the 'This is My' section do they just give you the lie as to how you know the person?
I think it all ended up in the game! As for North Africa I was really going for a vibe that placed you in that geography of the world. Haven't listened to that in a LONG time - I'll have to go back and revisit it!
I think they just see how it goes and pick the best ones.
