OtherI am the owner of one of the most famous capybaras in the world, JoeJoe the Capybara AMA!

Dec 13th 2017 by daddybara • 14 Questions • 42 Points

Hello, I'm u/daddybara and one of the most famous capybaras in the world lives with me. JoeJoe the Capybara has a large following on social media and has his own Instagram, Facebook, YouTube channel and Twitter.

Capybaras are the world's largest rodent. They are from South America and are semi aquatic. They are closely related to guinea pigs.

I am here to answer all of your questions you have on having a capybara, having a large social media following and any thing else you may want to ask.

Recently another capybara owner and a good friend wrote a book about her capybara named Dobby that can be found on Amazon here

I am also remodeling a large section of my farm for my capys, and have set up a gofundme here to help speed this process along so that we can set up a 24 hour live feed of capybaras for everyone to enjoy. (hopefully we will still have net neutrality!)

We moved in the spring so unfortunately they haven't seen each other.

Q:

Is JoeJoe fully recovered from his surgery more than a year ago ?

A:

JoeJoe has fully recovered from his shoulder surgery.

Q:

We followed your story, at that time, and we're very happy that he's feeling better now !

A:

Thank you

Q:

Capybaras are my absolute favourite animals! Ive been lucky to be able to feed/stroke a few in the UK :)

is JoeJoe ok around kids?

What would you say the best thing about owning a Capy is?

What made you first decide you want a Capybara?

What made you pick the name JoeJoe?

Are you surprised that not many people own Capys?

Would you consider having even more capys?

thanks for all the posts you do on social media, i love following them!

A:

JoeJoe has been around kids many times and seems to like them better than adults. The best thing about having a capy is the randomness they have. JoeJoe is a very chill capy. but he is also very curious of everything and he likes to sneak around to check out new things. I used to watch a lot of nature documentary on anacondas and they always showed capys hanging out or getting eaten and I thought they were such a cool animal. When I got JoeJoe it was a 4 hour drive home so I spent most of the time talking to him and saying different names till he responded back and JoeJoe was the winner. I am actually more surprised at the number of people with capys than without. We moved back in the spring to a large for so that someday we could have more capys. We have spent the summer making a swampy area, a grassy area and a pond. The GoFundMe I started was to help make the dream come along a little faster.

Q:

well i shall donate tomorrow when i wake up :) wishing you a very Capy christmas, and thank you for your reply! Looking forward to more Capy fueled adventures!

A:

Thank you

Q:

Are capybara's practical pets for everyone? What are the ethics of having a wild animal such as a capybara as a pet and what are the requirements to keep pet capybaras?

A:

I would say absolutely not, but I also feel many people shouldn't have dogs, cats, fish or any other animal if they can not properly care for them. Capybaras have specific requirement such as a large pond or pool for swimming that should be at least 4 feet deep. They are a grazing animals and eat a lot all day long. They can't produce their own Vitamin C just like people and need a large supplement of it everyday. There can be an ethical issue with having any animal. Capybaras are wild animals but the ones seen in captivity were not taken from the wild. They were born in captivity and have for many generations such as bearded dragons, parakeets and tropical fish, all are wild animals and for the most part they were not taken from the wild and have been captive bred for many generations. Capybaras are not an endangered species in South America and in some parts are considered a nuisance like deer in America are.

Q:

My mom hates capybaras because she thinks they're ugly. What about them can I tell her in order to make them seem more endearing?

A:
