Apr 4th 2018 by sherrysin • 22 Questions • 55 Points

Hello friends, I am Terra Lightfoot a musician and songwriter from Hamilton, ON. I tour often, all over the world. My latest album is called New Mistakes. I love hiking, guitars, dogs, stupid dog videos, and always trying too hard to get the longest road in Settlers of Catan (seriously)! I just started playing cello and I have the most houseplants of anyone you know, probably? I am here to answer your questions!

Q:

Hey! Congrats on your recent success and recognition. Good to be hearing your name more and more recently. Got a couple questions for ya.

Between you, Landreths, Sheepdogs, Luke Doucet and countless others, I think Canadian music is possibly at the best and most diverse it's ever been. Who are your favourite Canadian acts right now?

What's your favorite song of your own? Loose question - could be the most fun to play, a lyric your proud of, whatever.

Any song of your own you hate?

Also thanks for sharing my band playing No Hurry a while ago. That was pretty cool to see pop on my feed.

A:

First off, THANK YOU for covering No Hurry. That made my heart warm.

Of course now I'm probably gonna bring Lucid Dreams back into the live set...now that I've publicly stated that I hate it.

Fave song of mine is Ruthless. It cuts my little heart out every time I sing it.

Q:

I think we are actually going to do a full Terra Lightfoot tribute in the nearish future... hopefully anyway. We do tribute shows maybe once a year, usually at Times. We've done Sheepdogs, Neil Young, Beatles and Stones. Currently we don't have anything planned for a new one, but my singer and I were talking a couple weeks ago and decided thats what we want to do next.

Great list on the bands, I don't know Rose Cousins or Weather Station, I'll have to check him out. Both the Weber boys are absolute beauts.

Thanks for the responses!

A:

okay but it's NOT sam weber from the weber brothers!!!! He's a different dude.

So my main gal is my 1972 Gibson SG standard...no truss rod cover cause I lost it....the bridge pickup has been swapped out....I still have the old one of course...

I also have an acquisition from a spoiled relationship - my 1962 Fender Bassman....head and cab. in tip top shape, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful tones come out of this thing.

Q:

Funniest tour story so far?

A:

There are too many....recently we were trying to get to the red carpet at the Junos which was on a sort of raised viaduct, and we were below it, we could see the tent where we were supposed to go but we could not figure out how to get there...this is moments before we're supposed to have our pictures taken and be cool rockstars...and we were stuck in the rain 100 ft below....hahahahaha.

Q:

Hey Terra! I was wondering while your down in Australia again....itls there any chance of recording that cover of long black veil with william crighton? That was live music at its finest!

A:

I would LOVE to record that cover. William and his wife Jules and his little daughters have invited the band and I for a visit when we go in May, so perhaps we'll do some recording?

Q:

How freaking pumped are you to play with Willie Nelson and Tedeschi Trucks band? I am fan-boying so hard for you.

A:

Okay, I am a huge, huge fan of Willie and Tedeschi Trucks. I've watched youtubes of her playing guitar solos...and just thought "shit, she's the real deal". So I'm really excited to meet them and to hear them. I've also heard wicked things about Lukas Nelson. It's gonna be a crazy day. I will try to film a ridiculous amount of instagram stories for you so you can stay in the backstage loop!

A:

K THANKS EVERYONE I'm gonna have a nap. 9 days before I head to Australia and then we'll be on tour for ten weeks in a row, hitting Oz, Germany, and ALL of the USA with the Posies!!!! Plus a couple of Canadian festivals. from April 17 until July 1. Woo!! You guys all rule. I like Reddit and I would like to do this again sometime. xoxoxox.

Q:

Fwb

A:

Re: Gravy - excellent question....I love that classic brown diner gravy when it's done right. the kind that you get at side of the road kind of places at any hour of the day....also - my step mom makes a totally amazing turkey gravy.

Q:

amazing! thanks! if ya ever need the drumming gravy, lemme know ;)

A:

is this GRAVY the drummer from Wet Secrets? Cause I just met a drummer named gravy...who plays drums for them. Is this coincidence or fate?!

Q:

Do you feel like a rockstar? Because in Canada it's damn difficult to become one. You're definitely doing it on that standard.

A:

dude, THANK YOU. I find that term really funny. Because everyone uses it for like, makeup, and yoga, and all these other things. I don't know if it means what it used to. But I feel really lucky to hop in a van and drive across the country with my band and my guitars and party every night. that's for sure.

Q:

I've done the tour shit, hopped in a van, crossed the country and had awesome and awful nights. I'm inspired by your success and your IG posts always make me smile :)

A:

Well thank you. And so you know that the rockstar thing isn't always smiles and funny instagrams. Sometimes it's running out of gas two hours outside of Calgary or missing the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver while the rest of your party and the vehicle gets on....yes?

Q:

Yeah, and getting out to pee near kenora and the van just drives away...real funny

Q:

A:

My other favourite, from the Keelor catalogue would have to be Dark Angel...that song is so incredible, the lyrics are beautiful "Colorado, is a place I want to go, I heard a rumour she loves the mountains and the snow"

Q:

Hey Terra!

I took a gamble on a first date and brought my now fiance to see you at Times Changed in Winnipeg, so thanks! What is the biggest challenge for both Cdn artists and venues alike? What are your thoughts on the growing trend of house shows and apps like Dan Mangan's Side Door?

A:

OMG I hope I played nice romantic music so I could get you guys closer together that night. I love Times Changed so much!

A:

I mean that people are just chilling at home most nights watching youtube or netflix, when they could be getting out to hear a live performance. I think if I were a scientist I would research how hearing live music affects our brains and our physiology. Because I think it mostly does good things for our bodies.

Q:

Is there a song that stands out as something you are particularly proud to have created?

A:

I think when I look back, I'm really happy with No Hurry. One of our producers when we were working on it was sort of working against it, saying he didn't understand how it all fit together....but we as a band fought for it, fought for all the little pieces of it, and it came out to be one of our best songs, I think.....And of course I love Werner the producer, we used him on the next record too. Always good to have someone dissenting when you're making a record.

Q:

Thanks, that's a tune on my band's radar to cover. Yes, gotta push for something when you kinda know it's the real deal. Everybody wins. Speaking of real deal...that was an amazing performance at the Junos. Great song!

A:

I have always felt free to write whatever I want, but I'm VERY lucky in the current landscape because I have managers and a label and a team who want me to be myself. They're not pressuring me or asking me for anything else. I'm really lucky.

Q:

Favourite City to stop in on the road?

A:

Too many to list. Every place is the greatest place we've ever been. Everywhere is inspiring.

Q:

Hi Terra! new to music but enjoy a song or 7 of yours. I was wondering what your thoughts were on Baby Duck champagne? Planning to host a small kitchen party soon and need something around the $4 mark since my partner pays the bills. Thanks!

A:

Hi there, I am a big fan of Baby Duck, I think it has an elegance unmatched by many of the fine bubblies I've tasted in the Champagne region...
